A genuine downside to all those foriegn players is that they are more likely to be targeted and lured away again. Few poms have made it in Europe and with their price tags are less likely to be nicked by the big clubs. A balance in squad composition that asinine whinger should consider perhaps...

Thank you very much for your extremely generous offer. Honestly, I really was just joking in my last post about the Speights. I know that you probably feel you have to pay up (as I would have been if I had lost), but I am not worried about it at all.

Thanks Karl.
The truth is that I don't drink so if I had have controlled my transfer frenzy enough to win I wouldn't have taken you up on the offer either... but that also means that I have no use for the speights other than to offer to visitors (or as penance for lost bets). It also means that the only use I'd have for them against the missus to be would be as projectiles, and she's fairly nimble...

Walcott & Lennon in England squad
Click here for the squad list in full
Theo Walcott (left) and Aaron Lennon
Walcott (left) and Lennon receive their first England call-ups
Sven-Goran Eriksson has named teenagers Theo Walcott and Aaron Lennon in his provisional 23-man England squad for this summer's World Cup in Germany.
But Shaun Wright-Phillips, Ledley King and Darren Bent miss out, while Jermain Defoe is on a five-man standby list.
Walcott, 17, is one of four strikers in Eriksson's squad, along with Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Peter Crouch.
Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing and Bayern Munich's Owen Hargreaves are the other surprise inclusions.
Lennon, 19, gets in ahead of fellow winger Wright-Phillips, who despite not playing regularly for Chelsea had kept his England squad place until now.
But he does not even make the standby list either, which includes uncapped West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker and Crystal Palace striker Andy Johnson.
Uncapped Walcott is yet to make a first-team appearance for ****nal and Eriksson - who revealed his squad at a news conference on Monday - said his decision to include the youngster was a last-minute one.
It was sad to not pick people but we had to make a decision
Sven-Goran Eriksson
"I only decided finally this morning," said the England coach, who will step down after the World Cup.
"It's a big gamble, I know it is. I am excited to see him, he's a big talent. And pace in football today is worth a lot.
"For me it's a good squad, an interesting squad. There are some new players, some young players and it is an attacking squad with a lot of pace which is necessary in a World Cup."
Walcott was taking his theory test for his driving exam when the announcement was made.
"Theo's still in shock," said his agent Colin Gordon.
"He was only expecting one decent result today. He did pass his theory test, but there you go, he's got two."
Asked how he came to the decision to omit the likes of Defoe and Bent in favour of Walcott, Eriksson confessed: "Probably not too logically.
"Sometimes you do it on feelings as well and I am excited about Theo Walcott."
Eriksson's assistant Tord Grip said Walcott's lack of experience would not count against him.
"Theo is being given a chance and I think he will take it like other young players have," he told BBC Sport.
I am really excited about the prospect of taking Aaron Lennon to Germany
Sven-Goran Eriksson
"Wayne Rooney had not played many games before he was called up. Theo has not been tested yet but he will be.
"I thought we should pick him. At his age you have no fear and you do not feel pressure."
Walcott and Crouch are the only fully fit recognised strikers in the squad, with Rooney, in particular, a major doubt as he recovers from a broken metatarsal.
Owen is closer to a full return after also breaking a bone in a foot.
"I think Michael Owen will be fully 100% fit to train with us from Monday. Rooney, it is just to wait and hope and see," said Eriksson.
"But Joe Cole is a striker as well so in reality we have seven defenders, nine midfielders and five strikers - it is depending on how you use Joe Cole."
Eriksson admitted it had been a difficult task informing those players who had not been selected.
"This morning I talked to those players. It was sad to not pick people but we had to make a decision," he said.
"The reason why Shaun Wright-Phillips is not in the squad is very simple - it is Aaron Lennon
It's strange Sven has only picked four forwards. He should have taken Defoe instead of Hargreaves or Jenas
From S
Have your say on 606
Eriksson added that the decision to exclude King was based on the Tottenham defender's fitness.
"Ledley King is injured and he can't train," said the England coach.
"If you talk about centre-halves we are very well covered, so taking another one half-injured when we have so many good ones it is not a good idea."
Eriksson must name his final squad on Monday 15 May, but he has until 24 hours before Eng

A good summary and hopefully a good prediction:
Soccer: Premier league set for more of the same from Chelsea
09.05.06 1.00pm
By Trevor Huggins
Chelsea's place at the top is destined to become a familiar sight given the ease with which Jose Mourinho's men retained their English Premier League soccer title in 2006.
In charge from the start, prompting bookmakers to pay out as early as September, Chelsea's sheer consistency left the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and ****nal trailing in their wake.
Mourinho's management skills, the seemingly limitless transfer budget of Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich and the ability of Frank Lampard to score goals and John Terry to prevent them made the Blues all but unbeatable.
Even before being strengthened in the months ahead with the likely recruitment of Bayern Munich playmaker Michael Ballack, Chelsea are a formidable side.
Keeper Petr Cech's safe pair of hands, Terry's rugged defence and the outstanding holding role of France midfielder Claude Makelele made them very difficult to break down.
Going forward, Chelsea raided from the flanks with Joe Cole, Arjen Robben and Damien Duff, down the middle with 20-goal Lampard and up front with imposing Ivorian Didier Drogba.
It will require a huge effort from their rivals next season to deny them a hat-trick of titles.
United paid the price for a patchy opening three months of the season which led to their inspirational captain Roy Keane's surprise departure for Celtic.
Manager Alex Ferguson, who appears to enjoy the support of the club's new American owners, will certainly need some transfer funds.
Fired by England striker Wayne Rooney, United strung together an impressive winning run in the closing stages and threatened trouble if Chelsea suffered a sudden collapse.
But Chelsea held their nerve and United finished up with second place and a modest League Cup to show for their season, following a shock exit from the Champions League's group stage.
The exceptional talent of Rooney, whose broken foot was a bigger blow to England's World Cup hopes than it was for United, proved yet again to be United's catalyst.
Dutch strike partner Ruud van Nistelrooy chipped in with 21 league goals, though his days at Old Trafford look numbered after a spat with Ferguson.
Liverpool predictably lost their European champions' crown but gained a great deal more credibility at home -- snapping at United's heels in the closing weeks after overcoming a goal drought.
Showing a real improvement in Spanish manager Rafael Benitez's second season, Liverpool won 50 per cent more league games than in 2004-05 and reached an FA Cup final they should win against West Ham United on Saturday.
As ever, captain Steven Gerrard was their driving force and England fans will pray he takes that form to the World Cup.
Fourth place, and a slot with Liverpool in the Champions League qualifiers, went to ****nal at the expense of north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on a pulsating final day.
Thierry Henry's hat-trick against Wigan Athletic in their final game at Highbury ensured the Frenchman finished as the Premier League's top scorer for the fourth time in five years.
However, he remains linked with a possible move to Barcelona, ironically the team ****ne Wenger's youngsters face in the Champions League final on May 17.
****nal, who will start next season at the 60,000-seater Emirates Stadium, ended their final Highbury campaign with a flourish after an often painful period of transition.
Captain Patrick Vieira left for Juventus in July, Sol Campbell was hit by injuries and a crisis of confidence, fellow defender Ashley Cole was sidelined for more than six months and Dutch forward Dennis Bergkamp brought his career to an end.
The emphasis of Spurs boss Martin Jol on English players, compared to their rarity at ****nal, was a notable feature of a side featuring World Cup hopefuls Ledley King, Jermaine Jenas and Michael Carrick, plus young midfield revelation Aaron Lennon.
However, the biggest

Gryffyn

Perhaps you could give us your take.
Mine is kinda like... after sacking the legendary Bobby Robson who had taken them into Europe they hired Sourness who fled a struggling BBR. In 2006 Sourness almost got the toon relegated whilst his successor at BBR took them to Europe. Sourness sacked after selling the leathal Bellamy and buying the crocked Owen. The unqualified Roeder then gives Toon a chance of Europe via the inter-Toto cup.
It's anyones' guess as to what the toon will do next season.

In Sven's defense, England are fairly rich in the defensive positions. There are English players not going to the Cup who play in the back four who could walk into almost any other team in the world. England's problem is up front....most of their goals will come from Steven Gerrard I reckon, closely followed by Lampard, and they don't even play in the striking positions.

Soccer: 'Gazelle' now runs with the Three Lions
10.05.06
By Sam Wallace
There is some television footage of Theo Walcott in his days at Southampton in which the teenage striker bursts forward so quickly that the cameraman loses him from the shot.
Walcott is in the middle of the screen one moment and the next he disappears off the right side of your television set before a jerk of the lens brings him back into view.
Presumably it was videos like that which persuaded Sven Goran Eriksson to make his way to south Hertfordshire to watch a training session - this is, after all, the manager who cannot bring himself to watch a Championship match never mind a teenager playing three-a-side with the reserves.
Those videos and the recommendation of his old friend ****ne Wenger, who by all accounts stood with Eriksson on the side of a training pitch last weekend and told the Swede that, after Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney, "Theo's better than anything else you've got."
And on that was one of the momentous decisions of England's World Cup history made.
Walcott is the 17-year-old who came straight out of Compton (the village outside Newbury in Berkshire) and went from Swindon Town to Southampton and on to ****nal in the space of six years.
We thought it was exciting when Wenger staked a fee of £5m, rising to £12m, on him in January, now, however, this Boy's Own story has been transformed beyond all expectations.
Walcott was undertaking the theory part of his driving test when he found out yesterday he was to be part of the World Cup finals squad.
In the afternoon he played for the ****nal reserves against an Irish under-21 team and was, by all accounts less than impressive.
No matter.
The injury to Rooney has called upon Eriksson to show us what he does for £4.2m a year - the inclusion of Walcott felt like a good start.
What do we know about Theo Walcott? He is a prolific goalscorer of awesome pace who started playing competitive football at 10 for Compton primary school and even now was described as a "gazelle" by one experienced old pro who faced him in training at Southampton.
Walcott was also a talented artist as a child although it was his 100 goals in one season for the junior team AFC Newbury that had his town talking.
His parents, Don, a former British Gas employee, and mother, Lynn, a midwife, were at the press conference that Wenger held to mark the signing of Walcott in January, standing in the corner in some disbelief at the attention lavished on their son.
Lynn was concerned about getting back to Berkshire as one of her patients was about to give birth.
Now her son has a £1m-a- year contract, signed on his 17th birthday in March, she may be able to cut back on the work.
Walcott has a brother, Ashley, and a girlfriend, Melanie, and started his career at Swindon Town whom he played for in a tournament in Cardiff that brought him to the attention of bigger clubs.
The regime at Swindon at the time was chaotic to say the least and the current owners of the club are not even sure what fee their predecessors allowed Walcott to leave for when he joined Southampton: they think it may be as little as £5,000.
By then the teenager had moved on to The Downs School in Compton where he was an academic success, the school's outstanding sportsman and the star in a production of Bugsy Malone.
There was intense interest in him as he progressed through England's junior teams - before yesterday he was part of the under-19s squad despite being younger than many of the other players.
Liverpool and Chelsea expressed an interest and Manchester United came into the running as ****nal closed in.
Walcott was a Liverpool supporter but it was Chelsea who tried to muscle in on him first, making the teenager a ball boy when the Merseyside club came to visit Stamford Bridge.
He was given a contract by Nike and was signed up to the Key Sports agency, run by the experienced football agents John Calhoun and Colin Gordon, who also represent Steve McClaren.

scarey isn't it. he'll be a hero if it comes off and he doesn't have to worry if it doesn't as he's out of a job anyway!

It is terrifying, this is not a development squad.
Two possible reasons for selecting a player you have never seen play and who has never played top flight.
1. Sven is exacting revenge on an ungratefull country and tabloid media by deliberately sabotaging the national team.
2. Sven is a clueless moron who has overseen another period of underacheivement (other than the thrashing of germany once).
number 2 is my favourite.
The win over hungary was good but he is playing people out of position this late in the piece. He has a captain (ferguson may well be the most brilliant man in football offloading becks and getting rooney) who is passed his best (despite the sublime cross last night) and is wetting himself over rooney who will not play.
Sigh, I am getting wound up again. Every time they play at tournament level I get a tightness in my chest, they have to win this time. I was born the year they last won and have gone through the same angst and misery every 4 years (excluding spain where they didn't even qualify) ever since. :(

While I didn't state it, and don't want to take anything away from the Kiwi's, was meaning Brazil to win.
Actually since I instigated it, realised I got it wrong, and was 4-0 to Brazil in 1982, so will go with this.

can i take it from your revised score that you have just read a report on their 8-0 massacre of Lusanne..
I am just playing the percentages offering that the kiwis will get one, they will need to play the (very) long ball game and hope for a bit of luck..

This is a very informal comp - do as you wish BB. I thought us scoring one would be hopeful. Bet the TAB don't offer head-to-head.
GH - can always go for abbreviations - SPWCSPCC!!

dont drag me into this I picked 4-1 from the start and did not change it.. On a positive note I thought the boys went really well for 80 minutes but the extra effort needed to compete caught up with them at the end. Good news is England can take some comfort from brazillian defence or lack of. Disturbance in the force though, skippy did well against our girly coloured, clog wearing cousins. 10 men for a lot of the second half and a missed penalty. please God do not let the Aussies become good at soccer as well[:0]

Very heartening for Oz - may be tempted for a few fantasy players at good prices.
Heres a drinking game to keep you busy for the duration of the world cup. You must drink everytime you see/hear.....
-Stretcher being run onto the pitch only for 'seriously injured' player to undergo magical recovery.
-Scotsman wearing Trinidad/Sweden/Paraguay shirt.
-David Pleat mispronouncing the names of either 'Vieira' or 'Vieri'.
-An Italian player apparently praying to the referee.
-A Johnny Foreigner waving an imaginary card to the referee.
-Gary Lineker looking smug.
-Sven-Goran Eriksson looking uneasy during the national anthem.
-Thierry Henry shrugging his shoulders.
-A Frenchman in the crowd holding a cockerel.
-A Dutchman with an orange painted face.
-A Scandinavian fan donning a Viking helmet.
-Being told by the commentator this free-kick is in 'Roberto Carlos range'.
-A Union Jack flag unveiled at an England match emblazoned with the name of a club such as Shrewsbury or Torquay.
-Close-up of attractive Brazilian girl in crowd.
-African team's defending described as "naive".
-Reports of being England being 'drunk dry' due to World Cup mania.
-Beer can hats.
-Inflatable/foil World Cups being waved in the crowd.
-A commentator noting that a player has been linked with a move to Chelski.
-Local bar decked out in the colours of a random country's fans who have made it their home.
-African player going AWOL within two days of getting knocked out.
-A close-up of each of the following: Pele, Beckenbauer, Platini.
-German police being described as 'heavy-handed' after giving drunken fans a damn good kicking.
-The "Premiership Investments" thread being back on top of the ST threads list:)
