Much as it pains me, a near sure-fire investment now would be putting the house on the &rse to win the P'ship. With less tyhan 10 games gone they look unstopable. After my beloved Chelsea's soft capitulation this weekend, it's going to be a minor miracle if the Wenger-boys don't retain the trophy :-(

On a more businessy note, buying shares in Man U against a possible Glaze take over might be an option.

Sorry, that should be Glazer as in...

Fan anger as Glazer increases stake

Manchester United supporters' groups have reacted with dismay to the news that US tycoon Malcolm Glazer has increased his shareholding in the club.
Fans who railed against the prospect of Glazer taking a controlling interest in United were lifted on Thursday when it emerged his plans for an outright takeover had collapsed as Manchester United's majority shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus opted not to continue discussions over the sale of their 28.9% stake.

However, the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL franchise has now swept up another 15.4million shares at a cost of £45million, taking his overall holding to 25.3%.

Andy Walsh, the secretary of the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association, remains highly dubious of Glazer's motives and said: 'Malcolm Glazer has never been to Manchester and he is not wanted.

'We were told his attempt to buy the club had fallen but clearly this is an attempt to outmuscle Cubic Expression (Magnier and McManus' holding company).

'We can only speculate about his motives but we don't believe any of them will be of benefit, not just to our football club, but to football as a whole.

'If he got his way, individual TV deals and a European Super League would be even closer to being realised and we will not allow that to happen.'

It is not yet known whether Glazer bought his new shares from some of the big City institutions or Scottish mining entrepreneur Harry Dobson, whose 6.5% stake roughly equates to Glazer's purchase, but either way the deal sent the share price rocketing by eight percent to £2.85, the average purchase price of Friday's investment.

Glazer is hopeful that the supporters who have been so fierce in their opposition to his interest will see his latest move as an indication that he views United as a long-term investment and will help deflect some of their criticism.

Glazer is clearly intent on hanging around, although there is no clear indication as to his next likely move.

One theory is that he will ask for board representation, something Cubic have opted against pursuing in the past, thereby increasing his own influence at Old Trafford and forcing the Irish duo to either follow suit, accept a reduced role, or sell out.

Another suggestion doing the rounds is that Glazer will try to lever more profits out of the Red Devils by attempting to negotiate separate television deals, a move chief executive David Gill has always claimed to be counter-productive as it would increase revenues in the short term but wreck the already loose notion of competition within the Premier League.

In their own statement to the Stock Exchange yesterday, United indicated they would take the fans' fears on board should any official offer for the club be received.

'The Board can assure shareholders in the Company and fans of the club that, should any proposal be made in the future, the Board will take into account all relevant considerations including the potential financial terms, possible financial structure and any impact these considerations may have on the future operation of the football club,' the statement read pointedly.

With Glazer still officially `considering his options', United remain in an Offer Period and could do so indefinitely unless the American clarifies his position.

It leaves the plans of former Football League chairman Keith Harris in disarray.

Harris was apparently on the verge of putting forward his own proposals, which include a combination of fresh investment and more power to the fans.

However, in Shareholders United and IMUSA circles, Harris is not seen as the supporters' champion he has been painted in other quarters and many have not forgotten the part he played in advising BSkyB about their own ultimately unsuccessful bid for the club four years ago.

The horse has won b4, but it's just a hobby....the trainers are a lot like brokers I'm afraid, they tell you all sorts of garbage about how good your horse is. This guy said he would put it in The Oaks and it never got anywhere close. But it's all good fun. Won't make you rich though [:p];)

I'd really have thought with the talent at St James that NCU would be up there by now injuries and all - all clubs have a few of those afterall.

Seems to soon for Shearer to become a manager but he's definitely retiring in summer so he'll be at the head in a few years methinks.

Chelsea have scored 4 in quite a few games recently - certainly shut up the boring boring chelsea chanters.

Newcastle to be in relegation woe by the New Year? Just kidding MS ;)

If Chelsea still top the table after the next four games then they might have the confidence to carry on. Hard games in champs league and cardboard cup coming up to worry about.

I will be at the beach for post-xmas so no watching the games - just the results and internet for next few weeks.

Hacking bag of shyte 0 Chelsea 1
It's been a while since I've seen a team so inept, so secure in it's lack of footballing ability and so desperate that they take to a pitch determined to try to kick the opposition off the park. But that is what northern inadequates and former football club Blackburn Rovers tried to do to us on wednesday.
Started early, David 'small man syndrome' Thompson went delebierately over the top on John Terry (and turned away like a coward in mid challenge) after 4 minutes, Terry said he thought he'd broken his leg and also that the bloke went over the top. Then we score and they decide to do Robben with a late studs first challenge that Uriah Rennie chose to ignore - him being the worse ref in the premiership - and so it went on.
They kicked, hacked, spat and sulked. Funniest of all being Paul 'I am also a small inadequate man' Dickov who must be Rennies ***** as he was only booked whereas he should have been shipped out to the colonies. kicking, pushing rowing and eventually being picked up by the throat by JT and todl to behave himself or we'll take the raised insoles out of his shoes.

All Chelsea fans loved Mark Hughes, hard but fair. His side were dirty cowards, they tried to kick a point out of us and the celebration at the end - where Jose went up even further in my estimation by refusing to shake hands with the shameful Hughes - says it all.
We've bought success? Where do you buy that kind of spirit and discipline? How much does it cost? Any chance of getting soem for Tin Henman?

11 points clear of an in form Manure side who out thought ****nal the night before. It isn't in the bag, not by any means. We have some very tough games coming up and increasingly we are picking up injuries but christ we deserve the title. And the former football club Blackburn deserve to be relegated where **** like Dickov, Savage, Neill and Thompson will just about find their level.

United shares soar following Glazer bid

Manchester United shares rocketed by almost four per cent this morning following confirmation of Malcolm Glazer's approach to the Old Trafford board.

Malcolm Glazer: Another bid (Photography/GettyImages)

Shares were trading at 279p, up 10.3p on Friday's closing price, as United chief executive David Gill and the rest of the Red Devils board started their analysis of the `definitive proposals' put to them by Glazer over the weekend.

The American business tycoon is believed to be offering 300p per share, valuing the club at £800million, and would proceed with a formal bid should his current proposals get the green light.

Having told Glazer in December that he would not enter into any further discussions about the future of United until there were more concrete plans to examine, Gill is clearly taking the latest offer seriously.

Fans are vehemently opposed to any single individual taking control of United, a stance that has been backed in recent times by Sir Alex Ferguson, Eric Cantona and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Now Rio Ferdinand, tipped as a future Red Devils captain once Roy Keane retires, has spoken out against Glazer.

'A lot of people want the club's interest to be with people who have grown up with the club and got its interests at heart,' Ferdinand told BBC Radio 5 Live.

'No-one knows what this guy will be bringing to the table.'

Glazer has already had two overtures to the Old Trafford board rebuffed due to the high level of debt required to finance his scheme.

The 76-year-old Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner, who is thought to want sons Avi and Joel to be heavily involved in running the club, has cut the borrowings by around £200million and promised to earmark more funds for squad strengthening.

However, this has done nothing to appease influential fans groups, who have vowed to mount a forceful campaign to keep Glazer out.

Of even more significance though will be the reaction of major shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus, who through their Cubic Expression investment vehicle own 28.9 per cent of the club.

The Irish racing duo broke off contact with Glazer in October and unless they indicate a willingness to sell their stake, any takeover bid would be doomed to failure.

United winger Ryan Giggs tonight empathised with the supporters who are urging Glazer to back off.

Giggs, on international duty with Wales, said: 'The Glazer things doesn't affect the players, but I sympathise with the view of the fans.

'As far as the club is run at the moment, there is nothing wrong with it and I know the fans want that to continue. So do I.

'They feel the club is in good hands and it can't get any better than it is at the moment.'

MP joins Anti-Glazer protests

Manchester United fans have warned Malcolm Glazer that they will take their battle against his takeover bid to Parliament and beyond.
The influential Shareholders United group have been backed by the Manchester Central MP Tony Lloyd, an SU patron and chair of the Parliamentary Manchester United Group.

Lloyd tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament today claiming the bid was 'against the interests of those supporters and football'.

Shareholders United vice-chairman Oliver Houston confirmed his group would attempt to take their fight against Glazer to the highest offices in the land.

Houston said: 'We will fight this battle in Parliament, on the Stock Exchange and through the courts if we have to. There is so much at stake and we will do everything we can to defend our club.'

United's board are still deciding whether to allow Glazer access to their books as takeover talk intensifies.

Lloyd's Early Day Motion reads:

That this house notes the renewed attempt to take over Manchester United PLC by Malcolm Glazer and his company, Tampa Bay Buccaneers American Football franchise.

Recognises that senior players Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand have spoken out against the bid.

Recalls that the overwhelming majority of Manchester United supporters oppose the bid.

Believes that any takeover designed to transform the club into a private company would be against the interests of those supporters and football.

Considers that profit increases in ticket and merchandise prices in order to increase shareholder return would conflict with the club's wider obligations.

Accepts that football clubs differ from other trading companies in owing real accountability to their customers, the supporters.

Calls upon the Premier League and the football authorities to use the powers that they have to ensure that full information about the benefits and disbenefits of this bid to football in general and Manchester United in particular be placed in the public domain.

Is aware that bankers NM Rothschild are backing this bid.

Calls on them to issue a statement explaining how they intend to measure support for this takeover from football supporters in line with statements that that is their intention.

And reiterates its request to the Department of Trade and Industry to take steps to regulate any takeover on public interest grounds.

Of course you say "why don't more fans buy shares and then they can block t/o's"

But of course as the price gets pushed up with lack of liquidity etc self-interest takes over.

Plus even if there were 50,000 loyal regular non fancy sandwich eating Manure fans prepared to have a few shares - how many would they each need to block a t/o?

Bloody good result that, And the (other) scousers lost too. Expect ManUre and the Arrse to win but at least a little pressure goes back on them.

Starting next weekend it gets very tough - NC in FA cup, then the all important CL game and then the CCup final all without Robben and possibly Drogba for a lot of it.

Nice one gryffyn, Eideur saved us from a potentially tricky trip to Everton.

Especially liked his comments in the Friday Dom, "we are not a one man team".

Lets await a slip up now by Man U

Yes, ManC are certainly are the team most likely to cause an upset this year - already one over Man U and us plus unlucky against Arrse.

MS - Without wanting to sound sour-grapes, I'm not sure that NCU have the firepower to go all the way in this one with ManUre and the Arrse still in it. It was a below strength Chelsea in more ways than one.

However, that said we won our last two FA cups when we weren't exactly top team in the league - maybe AS will nick some silverware.

WOOOHOOOO!!!! we'll take it

I think we can do this on emotion not skill - though was just glad to see our defence not leaky for once

I actually lay the credit for the victory at the feet of the new alternate strip shirt with Kluivert 11 that was delivered to me on Friday - great price too off Trademe

Well, my FA Cup allegiance now switches to Burnley. As they may struggle to win their replay away the Toon will probably get my support thereafter.

2-1 down at the Nou Camp - not the worst result but a shame after being a luck goal ahead. Two weeks to wait and must wine 1 nil or better...

31 shots at goal by Barca, 0 by Chelsea - did very very well to hold out and an away goal was huge (even if it was an own goal!!)

Manure not so lucky

Gryffyn
24-02-2005, 09:54 AM
yes, watched the Manure game - high quality display by AC - don't think Manure will go any further at the San sero. We'll have our work cut out as well.

Hopefully we can bounce back and deal to the scousers this weekend.

For sure we will Gryffyn, that away goal might be all we need, when back at home.

We shoul dbe able to scrape a 1-0 nil & progress, heres hoping anyway.

Its Man U with all to do after a home loss.
Such a shame really!
