There are better opportunities in general in Australia in my opinion

I now have everything there , except for one in NZ

indeed, excuse my outburst.
the majority of my activity presently is conducted in NY... worlds better than NZX

but then again i learnt the basics on the NZX so i suppose it's good for something!

Just thinking about it, but isn't it funny how different brokers go 'off-line' at different times despite having the same feed-source?[?]

Have you considered registering as a Trading customer with more than one broker/bank?

If one goes down you just log into another and get basically the same information.

Would be a prudent strategy - if one bank has an outage you can get the same trading/market depth info from another website

I wondered why the ASX and NZX were out of step with each other and then realised the ASX is closed today. Was I the only one to not know that?

The ASB online trading facility was down from market opening for at least an hour and was acknowledged as such by them. (just for the record.)

It was the difference between NZO price here and on the ASX which alerted me to the fact that the ASX is closed

Rotsevni. How did that alert you? It has been pretty much the same differtial for quite some time. They have a wider trading range due to the smaller number of shares available. Buy at 82. sell at 85

I consider the ASB Securties website as one of the most poorly designed websites I know of, and certainly the least functional and user friendly. Frankly, I can hardly believe that an organisation that prides itself of its IT-savvy outlook can come up with such a pice of cr*py design - and I'm not referring to the aesthtics but to the lack of "practicality" from the users viewpoint.

There are other choices like National Bank or Direct Broking

I have been using ASB site but like using charts - the charts on ASB site are disappointing. I have phoned them twice over last year and they keep saying the charting area will be improved, but do not say when. So I am looking elsewhere - has anyone used NBNZ website charts and how are they?

Offshore: certainly I liked the NBNZ charting facility when it first came out but it does have limitations i.e. no MACD indicator.

It does however have intraday, weekly, monthly and quarterly charts; commonly used buy/sell indicators including RSI, Stochastic, Williams %R; and range of chart options including moving average, exponential moving average, bollinger bonds and envelopes; and a range of graphing styles including Line, Candle and OHLC.

Really you need to try for yourself and see whether the NBNZ charting facilty is going to be of use for your (specific) particular needs.

www.quotetracker.com You will need to be a client of Direct Broking as , as far as I know, they are the only NZ firm that allows access to their server. I also use it for my AUS portfolio (also through DB) UK (ADVFN) and US (Ameritrade)

He Tyke, good program, that quotetracker. :)

I have one problem though, when tracking NZO and NZOOD through Direct Broking NZ I seem to get the correct NZ values for NZOOD but the Australian values for NZO. Seems if a ticker is known at both markets it provides the Aussie values although I specify DB NZ. Do you have a solution for that[?]

Thanks

Customers of the ANZ bank can get a link from their website to take them to E*trade, and that is far superior to anything locally for trading the AUS market.
Now that the NB is owned by ANZ, NB customers would be better served if they also had that option.

I have used "quotetracker" for end of day prices,
ASX source for Australian prices, and Motley Fool for UK.

Recently Motley Fool has not been updating for me,anyone else had the problem?

TYKE: With motley fool giving a problem I tried ADFN, registered there but no joy either. Is there a secret? For me end of day delayed is fine, so don't see need for expensive real time.

Any other suggestions?

BK, When QuoteTracker requests the quotes, it explicitly specifies NZX as the exchange if "DirectBroking - New Zealand" is selected as the datafeed in QT. I just checked and got NZ quotes on both NZO and NZOOD. If you are still having the problem, please email QuoteTracker support with your PORT.XML and STOCKS.INI files from the QT folder and the description of the problem.

TYKE: With motley fool giving a problem I tried ADFN, registered there but no joy either. Is there a secret? OldRider - Fool has recently made some changes regarding their quotes. I was aware of the US site changing. Did not know they changed the UK site too. I checked - basically, I can make it work again, but will be way slower than it was before. Reason - if you request a quote on more than one symbol, they don't return anything other than LAST and CHANGE, so would have to get one quote page for each symbol. Much slower. In general, Motley Fool is delayed quotes. You would be better off using real-time from your broker if they QuoteTracker supported. Also, if you want, you can email QT support for Yahoo configuration files. (will fix fool quote config)

ADVFN should work, but only during market hours. Also, you need to have a direct internet connection. ADVFN will not work through a proxy server (routers and firewalls should be fine).
You will get constant reconnects though, unless you have a paid subscription, because of their round robin connection scheme. If you are going to pay however, you would be far better off with MoneyAM for UK symbols

OLDRIDER - Select OPTIONS/WebUpdate menu in QuoteTracker to get the Motley Fool UK fix. I also made it read the news headlines, so you will see lightbulbs come up next to the symbols in the quote table. Click on the bulb to read the news

Jerry, thanks for the help. I will wait to see if the problem resolves itself come monday when the market opens; if not I'll email QT.
Right now I have sitting on the screen side by side NOG at 0.90 and NZO at 0.83 - mind you, it shows the open and the previous close for BOTH being 0.90, but NOG finishing at 16:35 and NZO at 18:35
And PPP also shows Australian figures.

I have had similar problems since the latest windows update, which included the latest Internet Explorer version.

Both computers running XP have had the same problem, old machine running Windows 98 works fine.

Tonight I went back to using Firefox, XP machines worked with no problems, seems problem is with Internet explorer. I talked with my son, he says they have had some problems at his work, and in some cases some web sites will need some changes to perform correctly.

The worst problem I had with ASB was that I could only get details of NZ cash balances, foreign currency just hung till it timed out.

Likewise. 3 or 4 notifications didn't come through but a couple did. ASB are laying the blame with xtra which is probably valid.
Also, very frustrating to have the ASB ASX access slow to a crawl especially when the market has just opened as well as at other inexplicable times during the day.It does tend to negate the straight through trading advantage of the ASX.

Jay

If you are on Xtra, try logging into the webmail and looking at the bulk or Spam mail folder.
I found regular emails that I have been getting for ages in there and since the the "upgrade" THEY have decided it is spam. This included an email from a firend of mine that was not a "joke etc". Sent a complaint to them, yet to hear back
