With this market in correction phase, can we pick a few buys with perhaps an eye for good divies ??

Quite like PVO with a predicted divi of 3 cents a share. If they throw in a half yearly one next year as well, it could turn into a goodie long term. Based on 85c share price at the moment. Might be one for the future.

If the market continues to get or stays moody, what's the most likely scenario?

1) A move into defensive stocks, taking a lower SP but consolation in divvies.
2) A shift from mature to growth stocks, hoping for capital gain against the trend.
3) Something else?

With a slowing economy, a good div can easily turn to little to no div. If a company makes significantly lower profits or a lost, then dont expect to get any div.

This market is telling us that things are slowing down. Best to wait until the economy starts to turn or interest rate starts to turn.

Why be addicted to stocks? You say yourself the market is in correction mode. Why not just stay out of the market, much less risk, why look for something that dosent exist, they all overpriced

ive been reading slowly the books
i hear that we had some hell of a drop in 2000-2002 , dot com crash, i was still in high school back den so i didnt catch much of it..

then the bulls started in 2003?

so ratkin ur telling me that hte markets turned to a bear one only after 2 years of a bull???

the last time there was a bear be4 the 00/02 one, was in the 87'

surely there could be at least 5 more years of this bull be4 it goes back to the shed?

Daz,

Check out the 10 year graph on this page
http://www.findata.co.nz/markets/Quote.aspx?e=NZX&s=NZ50

You'll see that the Asian ecomomic crash (c.1998) had a much bigger impact on the NZ market than the dot-com crash. You'll note that the index at the end of 1995 was around 2100. At the start of the current bull run (c.2003) it was 1900. That's a lot of years of mostly tracking sideways...

I've dipped my toe in the water today, having held off for several days after being tempted to jump in last Thursday b4 the Easter break, a successful move as I saved over $1,000 on todays purchase prices.

Have bgt a few thousand each of POT and STU and have bgt some TPW and have an order in for some more. Tempted by WRI at 185 and FBU at 660 as well ...

Having returned to NZ for one week. i find the mood here depressing. everyone thinks its the end of the world. housing market, stockmarket, currency

im long a considerable amount of ftb, the price has dropped 21% in about a month. this is quite significant for me. but i hardly think it reflects the changing drinking patterns over that time!

If this is a correction. which i believe it is, then this merely provides me with a opportunity to buy into stocks at last years prices.

A fair few of my holdings are now trading on values last seen back in 2003. Back to high div yields and low P/E's. Fantastic, especially for Contrarian investors :-)

Sorry KW I feel you need a J walking ticket for that one.

Contrarian investors by definition SELL on the high and BUY on the low. How else can they be runing contrary to the mob or orthdoxy?

They do not HOLD on the fall. I know what you are saying but you are not highlighting the practice of a contrarian.

nele,
WRI is heading downhill BIG time end of april if the bse ban on US beef gets lifted mid april, which is the expected outcome. as for FBU its steam is also running out. i think NOG, BLT, and FPA, could be the winners at the end of the year, going by todays prices.

I see nothing to convince me that FPA is going to be a winner

In my humble opinion I believe that it has had its day

IFTWB price looks tempting. No depth somein the low 60's would be very tasty in a couple of years

WAM and SKC are good defensive stocks and have been knocked about recently...;}

The property and equity booms we have enjoyed were unstainable in my modest opinion, for those who have assetts and high debt.. sell assetts, clear debt, and put some cash in the bank, in hindsight selling shares should have been done a month ago..
and if you have cash with second tier lenders, get it out now,!!!

Yes Cap - thanks
back in NZ for a week.

I've been listening to newstalk ZB quite a bit as well... full of the same whingers still.
judging from what some of these people are saying I think if the politicians or local MP's listened, they might actually work out what it is the people want...... interesting.....

I believe at the moment the best buy would be to short the NZ $
and FTB of course [8D]

My short term buys from earlier this week ...
POT : bgt at 481 now 520
TPW : bgt at 508 now 525
STU : bgt at 441 now 450

Will re-look at WRI and FBU next week ... the three I chose were definately the picks of the five .. luck rather than anything else !!

Sold half the POT I bgt at 525 this afternoon. Cost of remaining holding excl bkg .. $4.37/sh .... SWEET !!!

I'd avoid FBU - fundamentals of slowing market demand are weighing on this stock, not just the general market malaise.
Building projects in Australia are being cancelled like mad as they cant sell the ones they have already built, so there will be a lot of contract cancellations coming up which will affect profit forecasts.

FPH will be one worth watching. Very exposed to the high dollar, not sure when its next result is due but will be worth looking at.
