Hooters to open restaurants in New Zealand
07 September 2005

An American restaurant and bar chain, famous for its scantily clad women staff, is planning to expand into major New Zealand cities next year.

Hooters, whose "Hooters Girls" wear tight fitting shorts and tank tops, has operations in 16 countries.

Spokesman for Hooters in New Zealand Michael Flinn said the first spots to open would be in Auckland and Hooters was opening here because of the "economic growth, favourable business climate and long-term growth potential of New Zealand".

According to Hooters.com, "the chain acknowledges that many consider 'Hooters' a slang term for a portion of the female anatomy.

"Hooters does have an owl inside its logo and uses an owl theme sufficiently to allow debate to occur over the meaning's intent.

"The chain enjoys and benefits from this debate".

It goes on to say "claims that Hooters exploits attractive women are as ridiculous as saying the NFL (American National Football League) exploits men who are big and fast.

"Hooters Girls have the same right to use their natural female sex appeal to earn a living as do super models Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell".

Hooters operates under the slogan "delightfully tacky yet unrefined".

Hooters of America, Inc. is the franchiser and operator of over 400 Hooters restaurants in 46 states and 16 foreign countries. The first Hooters opened in 1983 in Clearwater, Florida. Hooters is well known for its brand of food and fun, featuring a casual beach-theme atmosphere, a menu that features seafood, sandwiches and Hooters signature chicken wings, and service provided by the All-American cheerleaders, the Hooters Girls.

Yes. 400 Restaurants in 16 countries. So NZ might get 3? Or even 6? Meh.

If they make money hand over fist there will be more than 6, If the first one loses money it will be closed down and there won't be any.

Planet Hollywood springs to mind though it may come off. Only food place on the NZX is Resturant brands so it wont effect them.

How will NZ employment and discrimination law effect there employment policy. Thought they do have a good point re sports teams.
