What does everyone think about meeting up to share ideas
There are some of us that have been on here a while and I think it would be nice to say g'day and share a beer/wine/juice and chew the fat
What does everyone think?
I'm based in AKL
but im sure you could have one in all the other main centres

I thought that this forum was for that purpose.
Anonyminity is quite nice to hide behind. Better to meet strangers and drink beer and keep shares for here I think.
Good luck

Perhaps having share club meetings in pub would be a good venue to chew the fat ect and talk about other strange matters.

Errr. isn't that what we do on here? If you want to do it with a beer, go ahead! (or a whiskey, or something stronger ;))
Who knows, the quality of postings may improve if we all get toasted.
Anyway, having posted on here for a wee while I have this minds-eye picture of what people look like. For example,
MacDunk is a brawny giant of a man with a swarthy red beard, a flowing kilt and a caber under his muscular arm. He begins every argument with the words "Och aye laddie" and finishes it with his standard argument-winning line: a swift right cross.
Belgie is a disaffected student type who still wears his "Truk off Fuxtun" badge with pride. Whatever the cause du jour -- Gay Pride, peace in the Middle East, women's right to shave... he'll march for all of them.
Craic wears a green top hat with a wee buckle on the front, has a close-cropped white beard and a cheeky grin. Will probably be along a bit later once he has finished with the fairies at the bottom of his garden.
Phaedrus is a square-jawed, broad-shouldered pin-striped power dresser with designer glasses and Wall St hair... cf Christopher Reeve as Superman (before the wheelchair stuff).
:)
Seeing exactly how paunchy, pimply-faced and generally disappointing people are in real life is a dose of reality I can do without. :D:D

I predict The Auckland get together will get seriously weird. For example Barnsley Bill may start quoting the number of ducks achieved by Steven Fleming, that's if he can get a word in while Belg deviates to how stupid Americans are. Dazzla could be the minute secretary. :D

HMM? I wonder how to look like a flying goat i only have experience of being a black sheep[:o)]. SNOOPY could pretend that he is PHAEDRUS,and visa versa, Belge could pretend to be MVT and ENUMERATE might have a go at being DIGGER and practical for a change. If you dont like that idea we might all have a sh*t fight in the cowshed next door, before the poor bugger goes under. That event we have after partying up on sat nights. macdunk

On second thoughts ... I am beginning to agree with those who post that it is probably a bad idea.
I imagine that it could turn out like those awful school reunions. Going to a social gathering of people you have nothing in common with, apart from an accident of birth date and geography, is trying ... Hoping that the past-resident school bully doesn't turn up ... Dealing with the "self-aggrandising" small talk ...
On the other hand ... The pleasure of talking technical with Phaedrus; fundamental valuations with Snoopy; biotech stock picks with Stolwyk, Donner AND Jolly. Now this could be quite convivial!
There could be some mysteries cleared up. Does Capitalist really drive a Kompressor? Is MacDunk really an ex-paratrooper? Is Heavy Metal into music or just high levels of Pb in the blood?
Footsie is to be congratulated for the idea. However, the evolution of the thread clearly indicates the "social peril" possible with such a gathering. Just as well the Wellington crowd are unlikely to attend - sitting in the corner, drinking Bloody Marys, singing the "Internationale".

since everyone is so competitive, could be fun to run it as a competition - ie, anyone who turns up can't tell anyone else who they are, prize for the person who correctly identifies the most people. Course that would require agreement on an independent scrutineer who would know who everyone was, which may be difficult, and Placebo has given the game away for a few people.

Why don't we all just buy 100 TTP shares, say, and turn up at the AGM to eat Don Fletcher's scones and sausage rolls. We could ask him to keep the noise down when he delivers the Chairman's address - it is all pretty irrelevant to everyone but Jessie Lu. Maybe Jessie will finally turn up - we can do some karaoke to the latest HK tunes ...

Good idea, Enumerate. Lots of us probably do turn up at AGMs but we don't know who the other STers are. Maybe we should have our own badge - any suggestions, picture of a dog perhaps? - or something like the Freemasons' secret handshake. A wink, perhaps, but that might be misunderstood depending on the gender of the other party;)

obviously not all of you work in the city, but i do.... and well im organising this :)

Footsie will be the elegant chap in the pinstripe suit and bowler hat, carrying a black umbrella in one arm and an English Bulldog on the other. He will probably have a silk kerchief protruding from his jacket pocket and be wearing a cravat.
Careful how you approach him; he may not give you the time of day unless he is first convinced you are either
A: an old Etonian
B: an Oxbridge graduate or
C: A member of the MCC.
Make sure you end each sentence with `old chap', you'll do fine.

Old farts like me can recall a pub on Shortland St called "De Bretts" If you stood on Queen St, and looked up Shortland St, it was the first corner on the right. Is that now the corner bar ??
Yes, I even got arrested there for underage drinking (2 months off my 20th birthday) I recall being asked for my date of birth by the police, but being a couple of month short, I thought it would be real simple to add a year to my DOB, trouble is that in my befuddled state, I ended up deducting a year rather than adding one on, which kind of gave the game away.
Disc: Never was much good with numbers (particularly after drinking)

McDunk, Your Scottish friend ran the Gymnasium on the ship. He couldnt resist a challenge and when I, a poor ship jumper in Sydney, told him over my fifteenth - or was it my sixteenth pint? that I was fed up with Sydney and wanted to go to NZ, he just said "be aboard when I get back later". I was, and later the next morning just out of Sydney while the skipper and his entoruage were searching the ship for a reported stowaway, I was up on the after deck with the rest of the crew having a cocoa.

Yes, spot the sharetraders:
1) Patch over one eye
2) Parrot affixed to shoulder
3) Optional wooden leg or hook
4) Favourite expression: "Arrr, Jim lad"
5) Second favourite expression: "I like the cut of your jib ..."
I assume most sharetraders will be arriving by driving their Sealegs up from the harbour. Maybe a discount can be arranged at the Wilson's carpark on Shortland St (they only charge like they are pirates - don't really think they are).

I wouldnt mind but its a real hassle to drive into Auckland to meet at a bar at that time, unless you work there. Over the shore or out of town or during a holiday period. The idea is great, i wouldnt mind talking some sense into you lot.:D:D:D. Good luck guys start it going once a year or whatever, but make it easier to get to, like a night at some country hotel, where we can all let our hair down. What about that Agatha Christie murder hotel in coramandel, where EMERATE the mad chemist poisons BRICKS to put him out of his misery. We might have a guess who are you competition. {I can put on a great yankey doodle accent]. Would like to meet some of you nutters to check you out. macdunk

A JAFA (Just Another Friendly Aucklander) here.
And as for the age thing, well, put it this way, it seems that I've probably been around the block twice as many times as some of these 'youngsters' here. I prefer to think of the aging process as an accummulation of knowledge and experience rather than just getting older... :D
I really didn't give much thought to going to the "get together" here in Auckland, and it's not that I didn't want to, really... [^]
Although I work in Newmarket during the day, I choose to get across the bridge as quickly as possible at the end of the day and relax in the 'burbs rather than in the middle of the city. (Not all Aucklanders choose to be intimately associated with the City Centre including the Viaduct Harbour and all its trappings). Now that's probably an age thing...lol
Anyway, to all you Cantabrians, good luck with your get togther on 12 May.
Cheers, YOTT

Hey chch peoples...
I have found the awesomest location for the sharetrader chch crew meeting on the 12th of May...
Its a bar called stock X change..
the guy said he will put on a few nibbles for us, a seafood platter if we buy a few beers, and he will give us happy hour specials... 5 bucks a pint or something...
They have this board up called the beer exchange, which works on inverse to normal sharetrading, where each type of drink is simulated as a trading stock, and has a corresponding graph...
the more of one product class that gets consumed (eg bourbon, or speights, or montheiths etc, it goes down in price (inverse)...
we talked about an afternoon time...
anyone got any preferences... just shoot, or within the next week or so, ill post a time... some time mid afternoon most likely...
The stock X change is on 171 Cashel street...its located accross the road from Grumpy mole and holiday Inn..... right near the corner of manchester street cashel street intersection...

It's Friday, and my ASX stocks are getting the crap kicked out of them, so I thought I'd cheer myself up and remind all about the ChCh sharetrader meeting on the 26th May at 4pm at The Stock Exchange.

hey serp...
the chch national convention is going forward as planned...:D
its too late for others to step forward and say the 26th is not appropriate...
It was one sided when we mentioned it earlier, 6-10 posters all agreed, and no one else came out of the framework at that time..
will run over the exact details next week...
but yes, 26th, 4pm, stock xchange...

Hi S/C, Serpie & others, I hope you don't mind a "Old Fella" coming along to your meeting in Chch.
Briefly, I trade a few Options on the ASX, hold a few Blue Chips stocks for income & the last couple of months have been investing in small caps thks to your guys postings here & on S/S & then doing my own research... ( Smallcaps I hold AGM, ADY, FAR, NWE, SAU, DYL. Overall up about 25% in 8wks)
I'll be the old man of the gathering but have only been investing in shares for about 1yr so have alot to learn, I wish I had started out when I was your age...
I'm "semi" retired in my 40's but made my money renovating homes & adding value but I think the housing market is slowing down so enjoying the ups & downs of the Stock market.
See you there...
Serpie
12-05-2007, 09:51 AM
Gidday Brut,
I think there'll be a good range of ages there. I'm late 30's myself, and have just passed the one year mark in the sharemarket, so I'd be keen to compare notes.
I'm also playing around with some property do-ups, so we'll have heaps to talk about.
I'll eavesdrop on you and Shrewdy talking options, and hope to learn something.
I'm replacing the switchboard in one of the do-ups today, so I'd better stop chatting and start working. See you on the 26th.

Well, it is nice to see that the Christchurch event is moving, methodically, towards fulfillment. I suppose, for people whose ancestors arrived in boats after a 6 month voyage - it probably pays to plan ahead, carefully.
Contrast this with the Wellington event - centrally planned, culturally safe. However, it seems to take less time to consummate. Haven't they turned Cuba St into a motorway bypass, yet?
In keeping with the fast paced commercial imperatives of Auckland - we will be holding a second meeting next week. The biotech team has decided it has been a long time between drinks and wishes to extend an invitation to those in or around the CBD to meet on the 18th.
Normally, I'd suggest the Northern Club - but the bounders have neglected to invite me to join. Failing this, it will have to be the Yakitory bar on Anzac Ave (formerly German St until overtaken by events early the the 20th Century).
There is some flexibility - if Thursday, the 17th works for some - pipe up and I am sure we can accommodate. (Due to the hardening of the motorway "arteries" - we are all trapped in the CBD until traffic flows again - sometime after 10pm).
Of course, we will all be seeing one another again, on the 25th, at the Genesis AGM.

Has anyone discussed a moral code of conduct post sharetrader meeting?
i.e. one of the cool things about sharetrader is you can exchange views freely without, worrying about your personal opinions and stuff being displayed on the internet, fear of someone tipping off a taxman or even absence of public ridicule.
I think it's important that those that meet maintain addressing members by their online names and do not reveal members real identities.
Perhaps I'm just paranoid.
