Please check your selections. I have sorted them in order of posts made to this forum. I am interested in seeing if the people who make the most posts make the best returns. Also, if people who reside in Australia outstrip other people as a group.

P.O.D,
You wrote:
"I am interested in seeing if the people who make the most posts make the best returns".
I think that system is flawed.
There are a number of reasons for that:
On the NZ chatsite, people are likely to talk about anything and get points. There are threads about trees and shrubs, TA, Computers, websites.
There are a massive number of posts on the NZ chatsites which have nothing to do directly with stocks. It varies from the Invasion in Iraq; the gold price; that Steve who held his baby while feeding crocodiles; is Belg ... nuts; the American economy etc. I tend to dump occasionally posts from HC on this site but I don't have those stocks.
Quite a few posters serve the NZ and Aussie chat sites.
Altogether there are a massive number of posts on the NZ site which have nothing to do with stocks. So, the correlation is zero. If you could separate posts which discuss stocks, then you would have a case.
And you want to use this as a statistically correct base?
That is not possible.
If you insist on this then please delete my entry. I wasn't told about this when you announced the competition.
I suggest you remove all members' points from your table.

Tend to agree about relevance here of number of posts for a different reason as Ive been a member nearly 3 and a half years. So my daily total is 1.2 posts...Whereas Stolwyk is on 5.1 a day.
Whats that got to do with someone who joins yesterday to join the comp with 1 post?
Dont really care and of course wont leave the comp but...
P.O.D what were you thinking again?
Also Gerry, I dont think it has anything to do with the results in the end so wouldnt worry about it.
BTW, Im in the overseas group because I live in Japan but Im a Kiwi.
Any relevance there either?
Just keep it simple.:)

Is it too late to join the competition?

14-01-2004, 01:14 AM
Yes, you have a point about nationalities, C9.
For starters, you can't rely on entries. Someone who claims to live in Baghdad, could be your neighbour in NZ.
That wouldn't matter if it were one or two but it has been used to make tracing much more difficult. On HC there are cases where some claim to be a man. It was subsequently found that it wasn't true but they did it for their own protection or for any other reason. There are a few of them alright!
I have entered NA but I am a New Zealander. Yes, you could throw the NA's out but if there are a few of them, then they become statistically significant.
You could include them as a separate group but couldn't they be all NZers? And may they not have a higher or lower score than the NZ group? And yet, they are all NZers?
Then those who know something about statistics and confidence limits know that when a sample size is too small, you will also have severe problems, eg. there are 3 groups, one of 25, one of 10 and one of 5. would you claim the means (averages) of these separate groups to be correct? I wouldn't because there are 2 sample sizes which are too small.
Gerry

Hi POD, I'm really sorry to raise this as I know you will have spent quite some time getting things sorted at your end. However:
Why are last years dividends being credited for the competition this year. The competition started with tonights (13th) closing prices and runs from today to the end of the year. And correctly any dividends earned throughout this competition year should be credited. But last years divs ?? I feel they should be left out. But if you want them in for some reason, that's fine with me and I can live with it - you are running the competition.
Also, I tend to agree with Gerry and C9 on their issue as well. I'm a New Zealander and I live in Sth Korea, a similar situation to C9 living in Japan, but we are in different groups.
Regarding your query on columns. Column widths can take a bit of sorting. If you use the "Insert Code" tags before and after your tables this will help. Just like as if you were bolding some text.
However, the best solution is a bit more involved - do you have Microsoft Access on your computer, and if so do you have a basic knowledge on how to use it. If so, I can explain how to make the cols spacing perfect;)
thanks for the good work

P.O.D
Good of you to run the competition this year.
Determining the origin of successfull traders is an interesting concept. I can see a lot of good natured controversy on the horizon regarding this point.
Adding in last years dividends in order to kick start the competition is a little different. Many regard payment of dividends by a company as a sign of failure. If a company is in a strong growth phase they can usually add more value to shareholders funds by retaining dividends and growing the company at a faster pace.
Those competitors who choose companies not paying dividends may not enter the competition again. Possibly you could reconsider this form of handicap.
cheers

Struth!
Cheers POD for doing this - can't believe everyone is complaining. Isn't this meant to be all just a bit of fun - pick 5 stocks and see who has gone up the most by close of play 31 December 2004???
As for "paying dividends as a sign of failure" - you have got to be joking.
stolwyk

There are a lot of stocks picked which don't have a dividend. Why give preference to competitors with stocks which pay dividends by giving them a headstart (donate them last year's dividends) while the rest can work with this handicap.
Why not keep it simple as was so successfully done before?

Thankyou for taking the time to run the comp you have done a good job so far- keep it going mate.
We are all trusting you with it so continue to run the comp as you see it- after all it is only a bit of fun.
Trust you will receive the criticism as constructive, just give it time and it will all settle down.
Regards

POD,
I think to post the data in table format, all you need to do is surround it by the code tag.
eg:
test 1 2
test2 1 3
will come out like this:

Gerry I dont like to get into the politics of this site, but feel you are jumping the gun a little. You asked P.O.D. a question amended at 1.33 and because he hasn't yet replied at 7.00 (5.5hrs later) you are pulling the plug.
You do post a lot of useful information and I realise put in a lot of time & effort reserching. Perhaps if you don't keep taking issue on non-share matters, other posters wouldn't take offence and would respect your relevant posts more.

Alright then, P.O.D
What is your answer, please.
Hobbit,
You wrote:

In fact the matters were discussed yesterday and early this morning. 1.33 was 1.33 am.
You also wrote:

The objections are valid and have been supported by others.
There is no need to introduce other material Hobbit. Don't bother giving advice. I am sure you will know how best how to contribute to Sharetrader but unfortunately that paragraph doesn't.

Stolly, judging by the amount of posts you send this site (over 30 times more per day than the POD), not to mention your thousands of posts to Hotcopper, you had plenty of spare time to organise the comp yourself. Yet you chose not to volunteer, and you throw your toys out the cot when someone who does decide to volunteer tweaks the comp to add a bit more interest and doesn't immediately reply to your 'please explain' post.
Just let it go Stolly - your picks are on the record anyway, whether you like it or not.

Sec,
I don't have the computer skills.
I have organized some competitions without problems both on HC and Ozestock; I also prepare a number of reports for HC posters while I don't have any shares in the stocks I write about; I do hand copies to Sharetrader; yes I do my share.
But I have simple computer skills; otherwise the 52 entries would be no problem.
No need to be aggressive, SEC; I have explained the situation and I take it you are not talking on behalf of P.O.D. Please observe some courtesy next time.

Well, I did say I wanted to make it a bit more interesting but I didn't quite think it would generate this response.
Stolwyk, I have been in hospital the past few days so sorry I couldn't bust a few stiches to reply.
At the end of the day this is meant to be a bit of fun. Nothing more. No money lost or gained. Don't take it too seriously. I am sure Just Roll IT (who came last in 2003) isn't lying in a bath with his/her wrists cut.
I do find it a bit strange that you are quite happy posting your opinion 3387 times but seem upset at testing whether your opinion is worth it. It's only a bit of a laugh. Humilty and modesty are two of the most valuable assets a person can have.
As for the dividends..... I upload these from the yahoo website and of course these will change as the year progresses. Some people may well have choosen a few stocks on dividends. Others not. The dividends will of course become less relevant over the next few months (hopefully). In a way this is a growth/risk comparison.
Most importantly,
The person who has the best return is the winner. The same as always.

I forgot about the country of origin...again, this is just a bit of fun. I was mainly interested in the Australian picks.
Actually, I had better state that...
No results from this competition is going to be used in any formal manner.

That statement has no relevance whatsoever. You either organize a competition properly or you don't.
I have done a few on the bigger sites without problems. But I lack the computer skills for this one, otherwise I would have done it myself.
Thanks for accepting others' and my comments.
As to dividends, participants will consider those as important.
Suggest you remove that column with the number of postings. I don't want to be reminded every time I look at your table as to how many postings I have done. These are completely irrelevant. If they were than REV would have shown those.
I like an answer to that request please.
If you want to do that sort of research, then you could have used last year's data instead and used it privately. There is of course no correlation anyway as the data, as has been mentioned, is flawed.
Have luck with your competition,
Gerry

POD, The dividend question is more like...
Why should someone get a head start at all on LAST years divvy????
Surely if the comp starts on the 13th, then that is the date from which ANY growth should start. And the divvy, if you want to add one should only be proportioned to the period the comp is valid...not a 3 or 6 month divvy.
Still dont get the logic here sorry?
In that case, I would say, I picked TMS at the end of last year at 4.5c and MSC at 13c, both were up about 10% by the time the comp started.
Old Rider has started the comp with 3% already...meaning a 15% divvy start on say one stock.
I know its fun, but youve made it more difficult all by yourself.
I do appreciate your taking the comp reigns. Just questions that remain unanswered
BTW, the correlation to number of posts is still irrelevant because of length of membership.
You seem to be looking at the TOTAL, not the frequency. If youre interested in this idea for interest, then isnt that the number 1 criteria?
Hi P.O.D
Yep I'm with all the rest,
clean slate as of the 13th and add in the divvy's as they come along for this year.
last years have no relevance and have been absorbed into the share price for last year anyway
BTW, Thanks for taking this on, as you have seen so far, a bit of a task
Cheers Slam

C9,
I don't believe that any system re number of posts shouldn't be used at all because these posts cover everything as mentioned. I don't really know how many posts have been devoted to companies.
I would say that there is a significant number devoted to causes, politics, economics, you call it, every subject under the sun is discussed.
I am going to transfer a couple of useful KIM posts to Sharetrader. Is it worth it because next year will show up more posts?
Everybody agrees there is no need for it and for me it has become a sensitive issue. Is there some one around who needs to emphasize the number of posts, yet knowing there is no relevance as has been adequately explained.
It is a matter, I want settled as requested. I don't like seeing the number of posts. It is as simple as that.

righto,
the dividends have to be added sometime and they certainly won't be added twice. Therefore, no one will end up with any advantage.
It seems to me that the main issue is that some people are a bit overly competitive at these early stages and don't like being down the list. One of the reasons I did this was to see if the higher dividends tended to stay on top or gradually filter down the rankings.
Additionally, it is easier to just upload the whole watchlist from Yahoo and past it into excell and use a few lookups to do everything else. Yahoo does not record the dates of the dividend. In other words it saves me time.
POD
How do you know what this years divvy's are?

I suggest the following compromise,
1. I will remove Gerry as requested.
2. Full year dividends will be added in June and then updated in December. So there is still some small advantage but not much.
3. The number of posts will not be included in the competition ranking list but may wll be posted on it's own as it is publically available information and is open to analysis/opinion/comedy like any other opinions posted on this forum.
4. ditto for the country of origin.

The number of posts are irrelevant to a competition such as this, but never-the-less have some relevance for interest sake, i.e
I post seldomly, maybe 4 times a month. This is because I have a full time job, have only a small portion of my total wealth in the sharemarket, make only a few trades a year and only perform detailed analysis on a few stocks, those I own and those I am considering buying.
Members who post more frequently must have a greater interest in the sharemarket, the economy as a whole and probably the current political situation. These members probably have more free time (or time dedicated to financial matters at least) as well.
Therefore the interest lies in do these members have better fortune in the competition than those members such as myself. The number of posts are irrelevant but a grade (based on # of posts and content) could be.
Just my two pennies.
Otherwise, good on ya POD for taking the reins.
p.s. I did not slash my wrists after 2003 (the competition didn't go well but my personal holdings did).

Gerry,
I am presenting you with a yellow card as a warning. Any more toy throwing or quoting other people and you will be given a -10% penalty on all your picks. Taking you off the list would be to nice.
Like Just Roll It, I have a full time job and don't spend a huge ammount of time anlysing multitudes of stocks. I try to post occasionally on a few stocks that I ussually own or are thinking of buying as I don't want to freeload of other people, including yourself. It's nice to try to contribute something to this forum. That is one of the reasons I am doing this competition. I thought a bit of light hearted competition with regards to number of postings and country of origin would be fun.
Anyway, I hope everything is fine now, and no grudges.
