On one side we have local and centtral government pushing up inflation with the huge rising cost of compliance, rates, power, tax, water...etc for business and on the other side we have the reserve bank, also a government department pushing up interest rate to control something the central and local goverment have created.

As a businessman, I am pissed off having to pay such high cost of compliance and now higher interest rate !

How can we globalyy compete when our input cost are so high, followed by high $NZ? Very frustrating !!

In the last 2 years for my commercial properties.

1. Rates up 40% with further increases coming.
2. Water charges up 100% with waste water charges.
3. Power gone up 70-100%
4. Contractors for lifts and air cond have also gone up.
5. All compliance cost for fire sprinklers, WOF...etc have gone up.

Be comforted that when National gets in next election (based on the current polls), there will be a big cutback in spending (hopefull matched by a fall in red tape and compliance costs), followed by a country-wide recession :-)

I think there's no hope for national yet. Cullen has bought the next two elections.

Sorry, troyvdh. I am not a Labour man, and certainly don't favour many Cullen's pet schemes. But the man deserves kudos for budget surpluses. I would be happier with such was the situation with trade surpluses though.

beacon.....surpluses !!!!! where did he/they get them from !!!!! thats what really pisses me off..this lot really believe that they know better than anyone else what to do with other peoples money....they rake it in then decide who (like gang members and new govt depts) gets what...it utterly belies belief....some may call it "the god complex"....

Don't forget that 'surplus' is a somewhat technical accounting term. For example, the government pumps large $ into the economy by creating money from thin air for student 'loans'. As this extra cash - which is not representative of extra goods - floods into the economy it is directly inflationary. However, in the government accounts it remains an 'asset' and is thus not subtracted from the 'surplus'. (And won't be until the year that they report to shareholders {us} that they have discovered that they need to make an extrordinary write-off - at which point the dumb-asses who buy the high surplus low un-employment lies STILL won't see the con, like those old ladies who can't stop sending cash to Nigeria.)

And you do, I suppose. Quotes like the above are largely meaningless political slogans put about by persons who don't like paying taxes. And who does? But that isn't the point.

You are taking this metaphor too far. 'Red Indians', were somewhat collectivist by inclination, but there is no evidence that they were socialist parasites.

What metaphor was that? Who was using a metaphor? I certainly wasn't.

hiawatha...I pay tax...are you suggesting that folk like cullen and clark who are professional politicians have one iota of an idea (other than saying /doing ANYTHING that will ensure there political future).............of how real folk work blah blah.....you must be dreaming...this outfit will never ever get it into their heads that throwing money at people may feel good doing but so utterly soul destroying in the long run....its tragic when you think how many folk wake up every day and havent a clue as to why...

one third of our pop are on benefits ..AND YES they pay TAXE$S)...

A lot of them aren't on benefits any more. They are entitled to Working For Families instead, and this isn't a benefit.

In fact, Working For Families has allowed many people to get off benefits. For the first time, a mother with 3 kids who was "flatting" with a guy who she was "rather fond of" who is earning 30k a year is now better off going for Working For Families if they are a "working couple" with him working and her raising the kids.

Go and ask someone receiving Working For Families whether they are beneficiaries or not. Seriously, do it. See what they say then report back.

Scary, innit?

stop your bloody whinging. I spend half my year in Europe. Complaining about NZ just seems silly from here.

In Slovenia you have to pay staff depending on how far away from the workplace they live. In Greece it takes about 3 years to get title to property that you buy. It took my boss 9 years to get the title to his house. In Germany rates and energy costs are double NZ's. Taxes are all much higher by as much as 50%
NZ is one of the easiest contries to do business the only question is why we are so bad at it. I actually think we should make it harder. Because things are so easy in NZ whenever we head overseas to do business we usually slink home with our tails between our legs as it is so difficult. Why are Chinese and Indian frims doing so well. Basically to survive in those countries as a business person is very tough so when they go offshore everything seems easy. No corrunption, Honest police, decent legal systems. They are in heaven. When Kiwis go offshore we have no clue on how to massgae politicans or deal with 10 year delays in getting planning permission or rules that change depending on which official you speak to not to mention all the red tape.

Nah we have it sweet. Thats why we suck when we head off shore.
