View Full Version : Wellington Share Traders Meeting - November 8th

Ok folks it's high time i started the thread to gather the interest for the last Wellington based ShareTrader meeting of 2008!
I'm leaning towards either Saturday the 1st November or the 8th...
Those wanting to attend please post your preferred date...
Will be normal kick off from 4pm & once i have the numbers roughly sorted i will narrow down the potential venues...
So far i'm thinking of the following options...
Mac's Brewery (on the waterfront & scene of previous meetings)
Southern Cross (has a great outdoor area, BBQ facilities etc)
Vivo Wine Bar (about 750 wines available, great food & venue)
The Tasting Room (good food, good atmosphere)
Molly Malones (Irish Pub, good food)
All are in & around Wellington Central, but easily accessible by bus from the station for those just out of Wellington.
I can try & arrange transport if need be for out of towners...
I have a list of those from Wellington (or whose profile indicates it) so there will be a name & shame campaign to try & get the best attendance of the year.
Am open to idea's & other options so please post away :D

Shasta.... lets see if all the Wellington "bulls" can turn this market around :D
Just because the market is down, doesnt mean we all have to be down.
Lets all "come out and drown our sorrows"
For those that havent ever been to these social gatherings then come along, they are a good opportuntity to unload your frustrations with the market over a drink or two ;)

Absolutely Oiler, im an optimist thru & thru & can see the good times on the other side. I'm a gold & silver bull at the mo :D
For those that are new to ST or haven't attended before, we are a very diverse friendly bunch that shares the good oil amongst each other, despite our different styles & approaches to investing.
These are very informal meetings & a chance to meet the people behind the posts & have a drink or two whilst discussing the ins & outs of the sharemarkets, & other relevant matters. (football too aye Gryffyn?)
We have had several such meetings in the past & have had a few posters outside of Wellington attend to add to the flavour...
I must organise a comp whereby each attendee gets to pick 1 stock, that they think will be the best stock of 2009.
Sharetrader will provide a lucrative prize to the winner (cheers Vince :D)
I'm keen to come.....even if we are just sitting in a circle sobbing and having a group hug. Enjoyed the last one. The 8th is better for me but would try to get to the 1st.

It's just occured to me that the 8th November is election night!
That's fine by me (if you don't mind some extreme right views :D)
Hiawatha may even show up to have a 1 on 1 political debate with yours truly...(Looney left v the Extreme right ;))
QOH - Would be nice to see you again, & i know you'd wanna chat NZO with Oiler ;)
Hmmm maybe the 1st would be better then. Some people might want to sit glued to their seat on election night.

Hi Shasta
Either Saturday would suit me, as I have both these dates off work.
I take it that Monteiths Brewery Bar Paremata was not a great hit, as it's not on the list of prospective venues?
My choice out of the choice available would be Mac's Brewery. Them Molley Malones.

It was a nice venue but the numbers didnt stack up.
Seems we get more when its in town.
Next year we can rotate the meetings around perhaps & take turns, & try some new ideas?
Im always open to suggestions

Well I thought the wine was rather nice at the Monteiths Bar.... until I went back 3 weeks later and ordered a glass of the same wine, and I am convinced it came from the exact same bottle...
3 weeks oxidation was not an improvement... :p

I won't take any persuading to go somewhere with decent wine Lizard...
Doubt Oiler would either, maybe Vivo's the venue?

Probably some other nutter would step forward :D
I learn a little more every meeting, if someone told me 5 years ago i could show up at one of these kind of meetings (at no charge) meet other like minded investors, have a few drinks & learn a few tricks along the way, i'd be better off than i am today!
PS, I am yet to secure the Australasian & Worldwide rights to the Sharetrader Meetings concept (patent pending, huh Vince? :D)

Shasta you wont get an argument from me about
going to a wine bar :D:D
I cannot attend the WGN meeting if it is the 1st Nov.
The challenge has been thrown out there for you and any other WGN people to attend the reunion back at the Stock Xchange in Christchurch where there meetings all began.

Interest seems a little slow, so make sure you vote early on Nov 8th & free your afternoon to come along to the final shindig of 2008.
This weekend i'll compile a list of all those in the Wellington area, as identified on Sharetrader.
The meeting will be held in a central Wellington venue, but yet to be decided.
Would be nice to see a few new faces to add to the regulars.
Will post more details when i have more confirmed numbers.

I will be there on the 8th Nov. and will try and ring in a couple of other "out of area" visitors.
My vote will be in when the doors open........... its time for change:mad:.
Come on Wellington...... It would be good to catch up with some of the people who I met at earlier meetings.... George of the Jungle, Mosteph, Stephen to name a few.
What you say Wellington.;)

I'll highlight on the list who has been before when i post it.
Mosteph is in Austria i think, so if he can fly back especially for the meeting, then there's no reasons the locals can't make it!

MoSteph reportedly last seen in Hamburg. I think we can conscript him for first meet of 2009 though. Apparently he's preparing a presentation on cross-border transactions... or perhaps he meant "how to minimise tax liability by living in 9 different countries each year..." :p

Just the core group again then Shasta? Quality, not quantity etc...
Shall we head around to Vince's then and get him to fire up the BBQ?

It's hard to tell when no one posts
If it's just the regulars who have been before, we may move on to Vivo's.
That's of course unless Vince wants to put a dent in the wine cellar :D

Vince must have been catching up on some zzz's this weekend - I thought I'd have found my last post modified by now! :p
No offence, but if there aren't any more takers I might just give it a miss until next year. :o
(With luck, the markets will have rallied by then and we'll have hordes of newcomers who can tell us how to make a fortune in the markets )

I've been thinking the same, if we can't get enough there on election night, i'm tied up for pretty much the rest of the year...
Will wait until say Wednesday night, to see how many confirm, else will look at another meeting in Feb 09

Best we don't even think about what he might be going to pass off as wine...:D

Just seen this thread but I'm in Masterton/Palmerston North/Napier at the moment and very busy :(. I'd love to meet you all so I'll keep an eye out next time. Do you just meet once a year?
Used to go along to similar meets with traders at Dirty Dicks in London (No doubt a few of you are "familiar" with the establishment ;)).

I tend to time them just after the quarterlies come out on the ASX...
Next quarter ends 31 Dec, so the quarterlies will be out late Jan
I'd look at setting the next meeting up early Feb

I'm a bit confused. Am I right to think that the meeting is 4:00pm Saturday at Mac's?
I'ld like to join you, but I should be out sailing.
If the weather is cr@p I'll see you at the bar, if not then you may see Temptation returning to the marina.
