Could someone please say if there is a straightforward (cost effective) way of processing smallish $US cheques (US$100 or so) in New Zealand? Thank you.

Banking girlfriend says deposit in your bank account. With the ASB it costs 5cents per chq and takes around 13 days to clear.

Thanks Bongo, I didn't realise it was as easy as that. :)

Bongo is correct. Just deposit it in whatever account you wish. There is a bit of paperwork to go with it (at least with ANZ) but there is no major drama.

sometimes it also pays to keep an eye on the exchange rate, as delaying making the deposit can get you a few extra dollars. But I suppose its not so important for small cheques.

The last time i deposited a cheque from the US, it didn't cost me anything... but it takes 3 weeks to "officially" clear, but usually after the 3 days normal period, i am able to withdraw funds (and i'm talking ranges between US 30 to US 2000).

(and boy do i miss those cheques!)
