I'm going to pass on administering the competition this year - I've done it for the last two years and someone else can have a go.

So someone else will need to step forward. I spent about 45 minutes each month doing the updates. Most time consuming task was entering the latest closing prices each month, but overall not much effort required.

If someone takes it on, I can forward my spreadsheet, which will give them some ideas on where to start.

thanks for doing it last year.

Towards the end of 2002 I decided to move most of my portfolio into the ASX. As it is alot bigger it is hard to get a feel for what is happenning and I found that the 2002 and 2003 competition was a good way of following a few stocks and gauging other people's picks.

Therefore, I will do it this year.

However, I don't have alot of spare time and no doubt there will be a few mistakes along the way.I will endeavor to update it when I can.

Rev, you had better restate the rules and as 2003 winner you can have the honour of starting the 2004 competition. Actually, I was thinking that a good rule would be that you are only allowed a maximum of 2/3 stocks out of 5 that someone before you has picked. Probably not an issue, but it will keep a bit of variation.

Well done POD. Rules were very simple last year.

Competition runs for the full year, starting from the date specified by you through to the last trading day in the year. (Perhaps you should consider next Friday, instead of the Friday this week, to give those that frequent sharetrader only occassionally, time to contemplate their picks. Also, the more pickers the merrier and if the cutoff is too tight, some will miss out.

Stock pickers must supply 5 stocks - no more and no less.

No changes allowed to the picks throughout the year.

and that's about it. As you are administrating the comp, you can decide on whatever rules you like.

and you need to specify how the base prices will be determined. On day of posting or on the closing date. I decided on day of posting to try and get punters to time their picks to achieve minimum base price. Your call...

Well done Revhead, not only for doing the numbers work in managing the competition, but also taking First Prize to boot. Now why don't those professional fund managers make way for you and go get an honest job? You could make a lot of little old ladies happy with less than 138% pa and some younga ones too no doubt. Congrats also to Gofish, Younga and Paul29 for doubling readers' money in 03. And sorry for dragging down the average with my measly 24%. hi all,

The closing date for this years ASX competition is tomorrow (Tue 13) noon. I will then enter all the picks in and tomorrows closing price will be the starting price.

Any picks/codes that do not register (using Yahoo) will be given a random pick based on an integer between 1-1552.

I am also going to enter 5 random picks based on 5 random numbers corresponding to the 1552 stocks listed on the ASX.

I will also enter in GOLD in australian and US dollars.

To keep the competition a bit more interesting I will try and provide a few other statistics every so often other than the just the total returns.

Players will be ranked on total returns, country of origin,number of contributions and variance of portfolio. Total returns will of course be the only winner.

Dividends will be extracted from Yahoo and will be included in the first month. These will obviously change over the course of the year.
