It's a desperate situation. To quote from World Vision:

"Fatima is a 22 year-old mother of three who escaped when her village in Sudan was burnt to the ground four months ago. She has not seen or heard from her husband since. She fled to protect her children. They now live in a flimsy hut made of tree branches and grass. Their worldly goods consist of a straw mat, a jerry can, and minimal clothing.

Fatima's family is just one of hundreds of thousands fleeing into the deserts of Sudan and Chad. More than one million people in the Darfur region of western Sudan have fled their homes to escape brutal attacks. They have no homes, food, or medical care.

World Vision is working in both Sudan and neighbouring Chad to help meet the needs of these people. We are doing all we can. But we need more resources, and quickly.

These desperate people are living with virtually no shelter in scorching daytime heat and freezing night-time cold. Infants are beginning to die of starvation, exposure, and polluted water.

Please can you donate $70 to rush food and Family Survival Kits to help families like Fatima's? These kits contain supplies like water purification tablets, jerry cans, cooking pots, and more. Your donation will also help us protect vulnerable children. By responding today you will help save children's lives and give them hope for the future!"

For those who are sceptical that the money gets to where it's intended I've visited a World Vision project in Cambodia and have seen for myself that it makes a huge difference to the peoples lives.

Cheers all

Cantab

Cantab and Others if you donate to this how much gets to coal face and how much goes else where. See if you can get details of a Fair go program of about 8 years ago on some of these funds.

If you have young kids the child sponsorship thing is great too.

They exchange letters and so forth, it's educational for both parties and you do make a positive difference as Cantab says.

I've had business dealings with WV and can not speak highly enough for their integrity and professionalism. There is an International organisation that monitors global charities for such things as the extent to which funds collected find their way to the intended cause and from memory WV are of an extremely high rating.

Cantab somebody else came to a figure of approximately 8 cents that actually got to the coal face on some of these things Ask tv NZ to replay the Fair Go programme. Company and charity websites I myself don't take much credence from because they only come from one point of view. Have a look at some of the salaries the top officers are drawing. This one maybe a good one but without independant statements I ask Questions. And that Fair Go programme was an eye opener. I don't argue with your statement about what you have seen and the difference it makes But I am asking the question could it do a lot more.

Donations to wv are additionally effective when you request that they are used for projects that qualify for matching NZ government funds. Plus when you get your tax rebate at the end of the year send that off too. At least you get some say as to where your tax goes.

The way that I see it, even if they only get 8 cents out of every dollar.. that's still better then nothing at all. If there's a better way to do it then i'm all for it, but in the meantime some action is better than none.

My family donated a substantial amount to World Vision last year.

Every cent counts.
