View Full Version : Is League the Ultimate Knuckle-Draggers' Sport

Can any one out there thing of a sport which attracts more primative people than Rugby League? Just a trivial question of personal interest.

I find it incredibly difficult to listen to the announcers butcher the English language. Rugby Union (at least overseas) attracts a much better quality of following and player.

I can't believe you are a league supporter, K1w1. For instance you can type and there are no spelling mistakes in your post. Not possible I am afraid. You had me going though that a league supporter could be on this site :) nice one!!!

Spec, Why do you think I call myself K1W1 ? It's not just because I am not All Black. I had Warriors season tickets through all the hard years. Honest.

I expect to see all the more discerning ST's there next year - when our great new signings will take us over the top against those cane toads, dirty roaches and one eyed Aussie refs !!!

GO YOU WARRIORS !!!! [8D][8D][8D]

Rugby League beats Dog Fighting in my book... I'll always choose a game of rugby over a game of league but it does have an appeal now that the warriors have injected more "pacific island" style flair. Aussie players aren't doing themselves any favours by acting as they do.

Used to be a saying in Aussie
Union is a thug's game played by gentlemen
Rules is a gentlemen's game played by thugs
League is a thug's game played by thugs

played by greedy men
masquerading as patriots.
Imagine if the All Black forward pack
signed up to play for Switzerland.
Unthinkable.

Will Team NZ have the balls (or the money) to sign him up? To be the best, you have to have the best!!

Oops, I meant Team Emirates Zealand;)

Look in sports section of Granny today. Yarpie vs Aussie rugby coverage not one bit of league coverage. [:0]

Spec and others, as a gentlemanly league supporter, I'll give you guys first crack at explaining why.;)

Yes.
But there is some competition from investing in gold for the title of the ultimate knuckle dragging pastime. (see Cap's post on the Gold thread).
Other silly sports include: rhythmic underwater gymnastics and basketball.
Why basketball?
Because its boring, boring, like watching racing cars doing a million laps and the only excitement comes when there's a crash or someone has to make a pitstop because their big-end has gone. This happens, if you're lucky, as often as once every two hours if you are watching the unedited version.
In basketball one team gets to the ball, runs to the other end and scores a goal. The other team then gets the ball and runs to the other end and scores a goal. When the time runs out the score is about 100 all.
Any difference in the score from that is due to mistakes and incompetence.
Give me ice-hockey and rugby any day.

Gustavas,
Disclosure requires that I own up that the other sport I follow beside rugby league is...you guessed it..basketball.[:I]

Should I simply stop posting and go swing around in the trees with my close relatives ?

Because you are Major Von Tempsky does that mean you support Rangers ?

No, no -don't stop posting whatever you do.
There's bound to be a vacancy amongst the other female Royals in Britannia and you could marry her.
Me, I support any team that's winning :-) - like CEN ;)

Another "sport" that's good at butchering the English language is horse-racing, as in "He done good" or a jockey after a race "I done good".
I remember reading a very penetrating analysis in the paper where the commentator stated amongst the requirements to follow a career as a jockey "You have to promise to leave school before they do adverbs".

I put "sport" in inverted commas, because I'm not sure if it is a real sport. All the work, training, skill and fitness comes on the part of the horse, all the jockey has to do is contract anorexia and avoid falling off.

NASCAR and V8 racing. Ultimate thugs sports (if you can call them that). Cant work out why the hell Auckland would ever want to subject itself to thousands of thugs clogging up the CBD watching ugly blokes in ugly cars go round in circles.

marinesalvor
02-08-2004, 11:16 AM
Sorry Batty - but you got facts wrong there - saw research on Aussie V8s market - massive white collar, high $$ market appeal - huge move of tv revenue to this circus - main victim was Rugby Union - the bastion of corporate Australia

also huge female audience - medium-high incomes, V8s have become very appealing to public and advertisers

exactly why NZ needs a high profile race

Placebo

If you want to know the knuckle-draggers from the champagne quaffers you just have to look at the beers that back them. NOBODY knows their market better than the beer companies.

League, softball, = Lion Red = Knuckle Draggers
Rugby, cricket, dressage, pottery = Steinlager = Toffs.

Sadly basketball doesn't even qualify. It's sporting junk food and backed by Burger King just to underline the point [:p][:p]

Okay.. I'm fairly sure that you two don't sit on the panel on Eligible Olympic Sports.Cos guess what. Basketball qualifies, rugby doesn't.

If your kid plays basketball but not rugby if he is good enough, he can go to the Olympics, learn something useful from the Mormons who knock on the door or get a free college education in the States.

A kiwi, Sean Marks just signed on for 1.5 million dollars a year just for being Tim Duncan's practice b**ch. Imagine what he could get if he was good enough to be a reserve, or even a player.

Remind me again just how many sneakers the rugby players sell worldwide for Nike, Adidas, Converse etc ? They have exact figures on basketball players and they compensate them hugely as a result.

You know all that hip hop music the kids buy that you hate. Look at what the rappers are wearing with their bling bling. It aint no Super12 jerseys. Its basketball gear.

So if their idols wear it for free on the videos, what sort of sports shirts do you think the shops catering to the teen market want to stock. That's right. The big worldwide multi million dollar industry that is not regarded by either of you as a sport is what they are keen on.

If rugby is Micheal Hill Jewellers then basketball is Pepsi.

Actually the majority are currently wearing football jerseys, it seems to move in circles, and is reliant on the "hood" the gangsta is repping. The West Coast rappers seem to favour Football Jerseys, whilst the "Dirty South" rappers have a hankering for B'Ball tops.
MVT and Cap: "Bling" is another reason to hold Gold.

Gryffyn, can't believe that you don't regard basketball is a sport. Have you ever played the game ? If you have, then you will appreciate the skills that top basketballers have. A comment like that is similar to the Spencer bashing which we see down here in the South. Sure Carlos does some pretty random things at times and needs to be given some clear "don't do's" from the coaching staff. But when i hear people down here say that he is useless( which they do) , I just think well, they obviously haven't stood in a backline, when you know the opposite 1st five is a class above everyone else on the field, and everyone knows it and is just waiting to see what this guy does next (all through the game) - you are spellbound by a magician.
Thats what guys like Mehrts and Spencer are like.

Macks - please note the ;) at the end of post! Perhaps you are new to the internet?

But no I don't play, yes I appreciate the skills involved, yes I loved NZs recent success and I don't see Spencer as useless but I'd like to see Merts play the games where tactical kicking is going to more important.

Hey Coop bro, its all about seasons not hoods. "Currently" its off season for b ball, so da gangstas are following football [ I'm so far down the evolutionary chain I might as well disclose I follow it too ] aka "war with shoulder pads "aka " chess with tackling " but come May its gonna be nothin' but net baby .[8D]
