Interesting discussion going on at betfair on the subject.
Here is one post

i used to work in fund management for a large bank and combine this with day trading as i had a very light workload and access to all the required information (level 2 etc). i also used to day trade the dow and s+p after work in the evenings. in my opinion you have a far better chance playing betfair despite the massive liquidity difference compared with the stock market. i spent years learning technical analysis and charting and to be totally honest with you i don''t know that it made a hoot of a difference to me financially. eventually i quit my job and now play betfair full time. the biggest thing that you will learn from playing the stock market that will help you on here is trading discipline. try reading ''the way to trade'' by john piper - it''s a legendary stock market bible that will teach you the need to find your own style of trading that you are comfortable with and get your psychlogical approach to trading sorted out. basically a stock market book but very applicable to trading betfair as well. i''m sure any other day traders who have read this book will back me up on this. good luck.

I ocassionally practise trading on tradesports.com. Paper-trading is all well and good but there's nothing like having real $$ at risk.
I learnt about my psychological reactions to gambling and trading.
