Why do you ask, Mick?
There's a float been mooted some time to fund the
construction of a duplex water and gas pipeline
network that will reticulate australia with water
and complete the national gas grid, with a hookup
to both WA and NT.
A short pipeline will pipe excess water from the
Ord, to replenish the Officer Basin water storage,
during the wet season in the Kimberley.
On the southern end of the Officer Basin, water
will be pumped west to Kalgoorlie and Perth and
east to Adelaide and beyond.
Gas will fuel the pumping stations, where necessary.
As Kalgoorlie is 360 metres above Perth, there's
also some scope to use the moving water to turn
turbines for power generation.
They have been pumping water uphill from Perth to
Kalgoorlie for more than 100 years, now !~!
This will be a massive project and good for the
croweaters too, as the water from the desert is
like mother's milk, compared to what they are
forced to drink in Adelaide.
Already enough stored in the Officer Basin for
400 years supply, even without replenishment
from the Ord .....
happy days

Thanks for your reply Yogi
My interest in fresh water has come about through
having to do some research for an essay that I'm writing
One of the topics I'm covering is the increasing competition
for the right to use water in the Canterbury region of the
South Island
A large scale dairy conversion was recently declined consent
to use water for irrigation (a first for NZ I think)
I also read that many of australia's urban dwellers are on permanant
water restictions.
I'm beginning to think that an investment in a company who's
business is supplying fresh water to those who need it could be
a good long-term thing
I'm not too keen on IPO's but I'v now got something on the radar
Is this sheme you talk about something that's going to proceed in the next 2-3 years or is further out than that.
