Teen charged with burglary of popular Auckland restaurant

A 17-year-old boy has been charged as part of a police investigation into the burglary of a popular Auckland restaurant.

On Tuesday, Stuff spoke to the owner of Toby’s Restaurant and Bar in the West Auckland suburb of Titirangi. The owner said the 100-year-old restaurant had been left on the brink of closure after being broken into for the fourth time in two years.

The owner, who did not want to be named, showed Stuff CCTV footage of two men filling a laundry basket with alcohol from behind the bar.

Waitematā police inspector Carl Fowlie said a 17-year-old male has been charged in relation to the July 11 incident and is before the Waitākere Youth Court.

Retail crime: Almost 400 ram raids in six months, judge tells young offender the public have had enough

Ram raids have climbed to an average of more than two a day, prompting an Auckland judge to say the public and the police “are fed up with it”.

Police figures released yesterday show there were at least 388 “ram-raid style events” in a six-month period to the end of May, including 99 which remained unsolved.

During the six-month period, police said there were 218 prosecutions for ram raids, while 86 young people were referred to Police Youth Services.

Last year, police recorded 516 ram raids around the country.

Just a few hours after police released the latest data, a District Court judge in West Auckland told a convicted teenage ram raider; “The public are fed up with it, the police are fed up with it … and people want tougher penalties for this type of crime.”

Auckland police take five people into custody following two separate incidents involving stolen vehicles

Auckland police have taken five people into custody following two separate incidents involving stolen vehicles overnight.

A police spokesperson said at around 11pm last night a man and a woman were robbed on Karangahape Rd and four offenders fled in a stolen BMW.

The Police Eagle helicopter observed the vehicle from above along State Highway 16.

“The BMW drove the wrong way down Putiki St in Grey Lynn, before two people jumped out and were taken into custody by Police. The vehicle continued on the motorway before exiting at Lincoln Rd, where road spikes were successfully deployed.”

Police said two offenders then fled on foot before they were taken into custody.

    “Police are considering charges.”

Matariki celebrations in Shannon, Horowhenua, canceled after stolen car ploughs into vehicle, cop injured

A police officer suffered a head injury after a stolen car ploughed into another vehicle right in the middle of a community’s Matariki event.

The driver of a stolen car was spotted by police in Foxton shortly before 12.30pm.

The man evaded road spikes but came a cropper when hitting a number of parked cars. It then collided with a car on Grey Street in the town of Shannon, about 16km from Foxton, in the Horowhenua District.

“He then collided with a stationary vehicle... where community were together at an event celebrating Matariki,” police said.

Shannon, Horowhenua Matariki fleeing driver crash: Witness describes angry crowd, near miss

A young woman pushing a pram was among those who narrowly escaped tragedy when a driver fleeing police in a stolen vehicle barrelled through a residential street, crashing into a parked car as hundreds queued to pick up free hangi for Matariki celebrations in Shannon, Horowhenua, this afternoon.

The driver tried to run from the scene on Grey St but was quickly surrounded by 30 to 50 incensed people from among the crowd of about 300, some kicking and punching him before a policeman driving behind the man ran to the man’s aid, witness Richard Smith said.

“Everybody was really angry with him … he tried to run away, but there were just too many people there and they just grabbed him, and they were really angry and upset.

“It was lucky the cop ran straight in because he was getting a hiding, this young fella, because the community were not happy with what happened. He could have easily killed a lot of people.”

Is this the sort of situation Labour want to start seeing in response to the Lawlessness ?

Man who dragged elderly woman across a car park in botched robbery faces charges

Liz Ensor had just left an upmarket mall when a driver grabbed the strap of her bag and dragged her 50m across the car park.

The North Canterbury grandmother visited Christchurch’s Merivale Mall on June 29, a place she knew well and where she always felt safe.

She noticed the car approaching and stopped to let it pass. As he drew alongside, the driver grabbed her handbag strap but was unable to remove it as it was below her coat.

Ensor, who is in her 80s, was dragged alongside the vehicle. She was left with serious injuries and is still recovering weeks later.

A Christchurch dairy owner who was robbed at knifepoint says they are feeling scared and hopeless, after thieves made off with their takings and packs of cigarettes.

One man was armed with a knife, “about 20cm long” when the group robbed cash and cigarettes from the dairy, said the shop owner, who did not want to be identified.

Police admit it’s impossible to ID offshore scammers, investigators ‘not focused’ on solving crimes

A senior police boss says investigators have all but shelved attempts to solve international scam crimes due to complexities in identifying offshore offenders and their use of “money mules” to mask the trail of stolen cash.

Offshore scammers are estimated to be draining hundreds of millions of dollars from Kiwi victims every year, with cases surging in recent months.

Detective Inspector Chris Barry oversees Auckland City CIB investigations and the police district’s 19-man financial crime unit.

In a blunt admission, Barry said while scams were becoming more innovative and victims were suffering significant financial harm, it was nearly impossible for police to trace funds sent offshore or identify the criminal masterminds due to their remote locations and ability to hide identities online.
