JOHANNESBURG, Oct 27, 2011 (dpa - McClatchy-Tribune Information Servicesvia COMTEX) -- The Johannesburg Top-40 share index was up 2.5 per cent inearly afternoon trading on Thursday, as markets reacted favourably to news thatEuropean leaders had moved closer to solving the eurozone debt crisis.

The all-shares index at Africa's largest exchange was also higher by 2.2 percent, lifted by mining shares on the back of rising gold and platinum prices.

NAIROBI, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Kenyan shares vaulted 2 percent
on Friday to their highest in five weeks as foreign investors
trooped back to riskier assets in search of bargains, while the
shilling firmed slightly.

The benchmark NSE-20 Share Index added 2.02 percent
to close at 3,450.33 points, last touched on Sept.20, as
overseas investors tapped buying opportunities in agricultural
and banking shares, and buoyed by positive local investor
sentiments following two weekly gains in a row

Hey Hiddengem,

I invest via the Vanguard MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (VWO) a break down of what the fund invests in.

They emerging markets have suffered in the recent down turn like most other markets. They do seem to be getting some confidence back. I will wait until they cross over the 200 day MA before getting back in the market though.

A break down of the the ten largest countries as % of common stock:
China 16.8%
Brazil 14.7
Korea 14.6
Taiwan 11.3
South Africa 7.9
India 7.7
Russia 6.4
Mexico 4.7
Malaysia 3.4
Indonesia 2.9

What about sector oriented ETFS?

Remember last time during period of recession credit crisisand subprime crisis some sectors and some businesses outperformed thebroader markets.

The Consumer Staples ETFis still a safe place to be -- but don't expect a significant outperformancegiven the one-year run it's already had
Let’s lookat our current bias. Technology, Consumer Staples, and Energy are the threesectors where we have long biased positions, so we look for solid companies inthese sectors. Even if we don’t find a specific company that meets our tightvalue bias, we still create long exposure to the sector using broad-based ETFswhile we look for these companies. In particular, the Sector SPDR ETFs havethese three sectors covered nicely with Technology (XLK), Energy (XLE), and ConsumerStaples (XLP). And these three ETFsall have a robust options market, which makes it easier to hedge them.

Looking atthe chart below, these three sectors have done nicely in 2011 year todate, asall have outperformed the S&P 500 (SPY):
