Both the English document and the Mãori document form the Treaty. The doubt is magnified because there are two documents together forming the Treaty. The British treated the Māori version as a translation but unfortunately it was not an accurate translation (and it was couched in language that would be more likely to get Māori acquiescence?). So the pre-treaty discussions are needed for interpretation purposes.
