Hi everyone. I will be organising the 2015 Stock Picking Contest previously done by Paper Tiger. I want to make it pretty much work the same as it has been because it has been great (Thanks PT and thanks for the handover to me). I will be managing the entries, and the score calculations through a website I have made: https://www.stocktastic.co.nz/.

How do you enter? Two ways:

Option 1 - Post your selections here just like the last years' competition. Your picks must be on this list however:
https://www.stocktastic.co.nz/stocks
I will then manually enter you in the website. If you need to subsequently modify your picks it would be best to PM me.

Option 2 (preferred) - Self service using the website: https://www.stocktastic.co.nz/entry-form - you do need to register an account which requires a valid email address to be put in. Once you register you'll be sent an email that gives you a link that will log you in. From that point you can (but do not have to - set a password). You'd do this if you want to login again in the future. You can remove your email at that point should you wish also. The website should be straight forward on how to enter and the rules are displayed there too. You can modify your entries too.

My preferred way of people entering the competition would be self service with option 2, but to also (if you want) post here with your selections and just indicate that you took the self service route.

Here are the rules, also on: https://www.stocktastic.co.nz/ (https://www.stocktastic.co.nz/rules)

Entries are made by using the entry form on the site, or by posting here.
Entries can be modified only by using the same entry form, up Monday 5th January 2015 at 09:00:00 (or by contacting me here).
Only one account is permitted, and you may not use the alias that belongs to someone else onr sharetrader.co.nz.
Five selections must be made, the same stock cannot be selected twice. The entry form will enforce this.
There is a predefined list of stocks to select from, which will be those that are listed on the NZSX or NZAX and with a market capitalisation of at least $10 million as at 1st December 2014.
MELCA is a part paid share and not included.
Everyone has the same entry price, that will be the closing price of the stock on the last day of trading in the 2014 calendar year.
Competition closes with last traded prices on the last trading day in the 2015 calendar year.
Dividends and rights issues will be incorporated.
Any other random distributions will be incorporated, at the discretion of the contest administrator.
If a selection delists; it will be removed from your selections.

Please let me know anything you think is pertinent, or any queries. There is a contact form on the site should you want to contact me that way.

Thanks for this Kild.
I presume if we have already entered on your site they will remain, that do not have to enter again.

Good work

Thanks for organising this Klid.

I was just wondering if as and when it becomes known what the various brokerage firms are picking for 2015 if that info could be posted here.

I see that all stocks are currently at $2.00. I would love to sell my NWF holding for that price right now.

So I've picked (very quickly in like 5 minutes):

HNZ - Solid.
IQE - Don't know about it but GEM.ASX has done well so maybe..,
OGC - Gold!
RAK - You never know.
ERD - Loos like it could be a goer.

Roger keen to include the firms when known. I can add them in and colour them accordingly to indicate.

Try not to copy my picks this time Moosie/BFG

Haha oh you're a funny one Snapiti. Looks we've gone completely seperate ways this year. Not one pick like each other!

I'd rather do swaps on ruble derivatives than touch RAK. Yuck!

Thanks for running this Klid and a big shout out to PT for doing an awesome job on last years comp.

I will try and improve on my 3rd to last ranking with another selection of NZs best stocks:

XRO NZR SKO VML NZX

Software, oil and a monopoly hey the only way forward from here is up....

Klid a quick question: is there anyway to get a quick list of most popular picks by %. Would be interesting to know this.

My picks are:
HNZ ... Look good and solid. Secured loans and investments so little down side risk.
IFT ... Good performing investments with potential for continued improvements
NWF ... Never made a profit, but positive annual cash flow and debt free.
GNE ... Its a mild El-Nino, so North Island Thermal and South Island Hydro suits perfectly.
CEN ... Its a mild El-Nino, so North Island Thermal and South Island Hydro suits perfectly.

Have already posted on Stocktastic:

PGW, SCL, GNE, DPC, HBY.

My top 13 stocks for now given below - have overridden the 'system'...notably for DPC.

I think DPC will join the 'froth' sector (tech and villages) in 2015, driven by acquisitions and the ability of its board to hype them.

Thank you. It won't be bad. I will do one big sweep of this thread and enter any picks that aren't already registered on the site with the same alias, it won't take long. PT said that was the most time consuming thing (entering/modifying everyone's selections), it was a task made harder due to the fact that everyone had their entry price on the date they chose the selections. So I've tried to streamline that with the online all in one place stuff and self service option.

I don't want any sort of pecuniary gain. The costs of putting it up and maintaining it are rather minimal, In fact I am keen to put up some sort of small prize, just something small.

p.s. removed the 50 pager size on the rankings, well, set it to 1000, will make for an easy copy and paste here on the Fridays.

Thanks Klid for carrying on from PT's great effort over the last 3 years.

With only a quick fire look into these:

IFT - Well run company, quality assets, wish they could buy out WCC holding in the airport!
AIR - 2015 Cricket World Cup, U20 Football world cup, direct flights to Argentina & more services to China, cheap fuel...
RBC - Look for SSH activity, there's value in TEN, $USD strengthening helps
SCL - Looks interesting & was tipped off on it!
WHS - Well run, I like the new CEO, bringing in "living wage" rates over 3 years, is there anything they wont sell?

Cheers

Thanks Klid.

Here are my picks (as per the website)
VIL - My highest Conviction. 43% Growth, 10%+ dividend, and pe in single digits. see Here (http://www.sharetrader.co.nz/showthread.php?9111-VIL-Veritas-Investments-Limited&p=523216&viewfull=1#post523216)
CVT - 50% eps growth from Fy14-Fy16. see here (http://www.sharetrader.co.nz/showthread.php?1449-Comvita-CVT&p=521109&viewfull=1#post521109)
PGW - Pure dividend play - 13% dividend. Expect some capital gains as well
IQE - expect 30% eps growth over FY15
SCL - Amazing performance given headwinds. Yet still pays 10% dividend while we wait for FY16 growth

There is so much value on the NZX at the moment. It pains me to leave out HNZ, DPC, THL, EVO, and AWF

Agree strongly with most of that - but isn't PGW on a current gross yield of 17.4%? With profit increases forecast?

I think on a historical basis, PGW would be on 17%. But that included a 1c special dividend. I've simply taken average analyst forecasts for FY15. 13% is still quite alluring:)

An exercise for someone with more time on their hands than me would be to see if their was any correlation between the performance and the popularity of the stock. I am guessing the correlation would be negative.

An exercise for someone with more time on their hands than me would be to see if their was any correlation between the performance and the popularity of the stock. I am guessing the correlation would be negative.

If you take history as a guide (the 2014 stock picking competition), than you are correct. The ST Top 5 in 2014 did quite poor compared to whatever you want them to compare to (like market, analysts picks, ...). Overall return of 1.56% - not flash. However - past performance is no indicator for future failure (well, not always). So I guess - time will tell, whether the ST top 5 (or top 10) do better this time around.

If we look at the list so far - yes, most of them are popular (measured in threat length). Some of them are IMHO fully priced (i.e. I wouldn't expect them to rise, but who knows ...) or already too dear, some are purely speculative (no way to predict their performance in advance) ... and some of them I would pick myself (might not be my top 5, but am holding some of them, i.e. expect them to perform).

Discl: holding (from above list): PEB, SUM, IFT, PGW, BRL, OGC;

Hi kild are NTL (New Tailsman) and ALF (Allied Farmers) not available stocks to be picked? I don't see it as an option on the form.

As far as I remember - companies need to have a market cap of at least $10M to take part in the competition. Both NTL and ALF are below that number (both in the $7M ...) .

I note a couple of high profile professional investors have joined the comp. Namely PHuljich and ABhatnagar. Along with the brokers, this makes the competition a bit like a pro/am tournament. Very exciting!
Great. Though do we know it is actually them?

Interesting - three of the ST Top Fives don't feature at all under the brokers picks: ATM, PEB, XRO.

Majority consensus seems to be related to DIL ... and one of the brokers picks as well HNZ.

So I guess - it either will be a good year for the brokers ... or for the majority of the ST punters. For sure it won't be boring ...

I entered the brokers' picks too. JBWere are only allowed 4 selections for not following the rules

Pretty happy with last years results with all my large cap ideas! More of the same this year.

AIR - Revenue growth accelerates + operational leverage + margin gains + lower oil windfall + new fleet + rising dividends = another good year for me
TME - Revenue growth continues, eps growth modest given investments. Nice dividend. PE expansion as people look to 2016 and 10% EPS growth returning. High quality.
TWR - high yield and lots of surplus capital to use. Might get bought.
IFT - Defensive
NZX - Defensive will benefit from increased IPO's etc

Thanks for running it - mod

PLEASE EXPLAIN NOTICE ?
Are you trying to repeat your fine effort in the 2014 competition, where you featured last, from near beginning to end, finishing up 210th with minus 53.25%????

OGC - GFC2 to get the price of gold moving
VCT - Monopoly with steady div to offset gold gamble
CNU - Just hoping all goes well as it was nice to nearly breakeven in 2014 for what is a large holding for me
MRP - Haven't done any research but another larger holding I would like to see do well. Return just dividends
PGW - Good Dividend Yield. Dairy in the poo but sheep and beef OK. Not sure PGW mix but assume RD1 has most dairy farming business

Thanks Klid, some quick last minute guesses to help improve my interest in shares for the year.

Nothing here about closing date and i didn't go to the other comp website where rules are clearer; my bad.

Im choosing food and Riches this year .

HNZ still happy holder
OGC goldie will have its day ,holder

ATM, BRM, MLN, PGW & TTK. Happy New Year . Good luck .

Changed DIL to BRM 11 minutes before closing, but is still showing DIL on comp. site, but not too worried, DIL will probably do better than BRM.

Don't want to clog up the thread with rubbish but just a quick note that on this day 6 January 2015 "Aaron" was number 1 on the stocktastic table. Before you all come rushing to my door seeking my sage advice, in depth company analysis and macro economic soothsaying I would have to admit I can provide none of these things as I made it up on the spot in a big rush. I don't even own OGC, mostly because I recently purchased NCM on the ASX based on morningstar recommendation and have enough exposure to gold miners through that. I got burned big time by the good doctor's recommendations from D & D in the past two years. OGC was the only gold miner I knew on the NZX.

Ahh ok post them when you can then and as long as you're not abusing knowledge you have gained from your 2015 memories then I guess it's OK? :)

Thank you Klid! Really appreciate your generous efforts. Had a particularly ridiculous silly season this year and forgot NZ comp had different rules from Ozzie one which I've followed much more...
I see a lot of value among small stocks: AWF, CVT, SCL, THL, VIL
Just checked prices last 2 days (chose first). Only significant move has been down for CVT (outweighs small gains in AWF and VIL). So I trust all's fair with Monday pricing. If it's too much hassle don't worry...3rd world problems :)

I think we first should acknowledge that the rules (including the closing date) have been clear for everybody who cared to check. Admittedly - the closing date has been earlier than in previous years ... i.e. people who didn't bother to check, might have missed out inadvertently.

From the perspective of an participant (entering in time): people who enter late obviously do have a small advantage if their benchmark start price is the same as for everybody else (31/12/14) ... and I presume giving them a different benchmark date (like first trade after their entry or similar) makes probably a hell of a lot of additional work for klid (though I make here assumptions re the program which might be wrong).

Most of all ... Latecomers create an unnecessary workload for the administrator (manual entry) ... and so I am more than happy to leave it up to klid to decide how long he (hope I got this right?) wants to accommodate for them. Propose however to set and publish a last "late entry" date in the not too far future - and be prepared to enforce that. There will always be people who come late (no matter, how long you wait) - too bad for them.

Ah yes - and another big "Thank You" for klid for first putting in the effort in preparing this flash website to run this years competition ... and afterwards taking the beating from latecomers who didn't read the rules ... maybe we need another rule for next year: Any latecomer to send the administrator a good bottle of wine (or whatever his/her poison of choice is) before being (late) accepted into the contest ...

This little website is actually a quite handy tool for keeping an eye on prices without having to go into all the rigamarole of logging in on ASB. An added bonus is the percentage gain or loss since the beginning of the year.

I don't think anyone should be allowed to enter the competition after closure date. I was disappointed in Klid decision to allow others to enter after the closure date. On further thought, could you please remove my account and competition entry from the website Klid?

I see that there is no rule pertaining to a request such as this, but the web site doesn't seem to have provisions to do so myself.

I fully understand that at the end of the day it's only a "game".

I do know that I'm not one who enjoy playing a game of chess when my competitor gets to move their king two squares at a time, nor do I enjoy a tennis match when my competitor gets a strung racket and I get a table tennis paddle.

I'd rather not take part.

For goodness sake, this IS a game!!!!!! The winner gets bragging rights and that's all. I wouldn't want to borrow your ball for a soccer game, you would probably ask for it back if you felt the ref made a bad decision.

the asx one is run differently in that there is 2 weeks grace for 2 reasons.

1 the holiday period can be a busy time and peoples thoughts are often elsewhere.
2 very rarely does an event in the 1st 2 weeks of the year define the behaviour of a share for the rest of the year.

the 2 week grace is strict though, anyone after that looses out.
the start price is the first traded price from the day following the pick.

this might be worth thinking about for next year.

I have calculated the statistical odds of someone entering 2 days late as having a 0.005% advantage. 4 days late and the advantage soars to 0.01%! Now, for those whingeing about it, when there was no major announcements made in that time period for ANY company, is it really worth your wasted time? Remembering, also, that it's just a fun game.

As Robbo wpuld say...

And I have just got back from 13 days away and haven't seen any prices. I don't much care whether the following selection is accepted as an entry - but here goes anyway. I don't care when the prices are calculated from, because it seems to me that any advantage in the ups and downs of the last nine days will be swamped by the sorts of movements that are likely over the next 12 months.

Poor old Klid - trying to do everyone a favour with his really smart new website and now getting all this grief.

As Moosie says - it's only a fun game. Can I suggest that the latecomers be given until 5pm Tuesday 13th January to get their entries in - then the door be slammed shut for the remainder of the year.

The difference with this year's comp is that everyone starts with the same entry point - the closing price of the stock on the last day of trading in the 2014 calendar year - not the price applicable on the date of entry. I certainly don't think allowing a few stragglers a bit of leeway this year is cause for alarm. Let 'em in if they're keen to join the fun - this is not life or death, it's far more serious than that!

But I suggest that the 2016 competition be opened earlier - say December 20, entry price closing SP on last trading day of 2015 - and close firmly on the morning of the first full day of trading for the new year.

Bonne chance to everyone.

Pierre

I think it is a fair comment made by others including myself. It is a fun competition, but over 190 people understood the rules or don't their entries count for anything? If you were late or to lazy to read the rules that is your fault, life is not always fair.

Someone said, you are worried about your placing in the competition which is not the case. I'm pointing out that majority understood the rules and entered the competition by the corrct time which is clearly shown by the amount of people entered or am I wrong? At the end of the day Klid has the final decision.

Hello Klid....many thanks for putting in the time to set up this new website for this years competition.
The rules of the competition were there for all to see prior to entry..and at least 190 members accepted this & entered the competition
If the rules are to be changed to accept late entries..then with "tongue in cheek" I ask that The rules can be changed so that I can change my picks
After all in reading some of the posts I can see that it is "only a game" & that there is a minimal advantage in entering a few days late. I also see that those complaining about these late entries lack community spirit & are getting "bent out of shape " (whatever that means.)
So on the grounds that these rules are not really rules ..I ask that my picks can be changed ( & in doing so I promise not to cheat...& will use a dart with bent feathers)

Have to agree - it is now getting ridiculous. If we really accept these amazing predictions of past events, than at least we would need to add a penalty for these people which removes their benefit of coming late. If that's easy to do klid, than feel free to do so, otherwise I really think we should finally close the competition for new entries.

Spooky happenings in the rankings. Caused by observation?
Where a contestant sits in close proximity to a Broker ( interference? ) there are strange warping effects in the rankings.

Pinging Schrodinger. Can you jump online and explain please.
I'm experiencing bouts of imagining I'm oscillating between universes. Maybe I need a reality check.

'da fool.
The brokers are there merely for observation purposes and they inherit the ranking of the person... above them. But I can see I need to make a slight tweak to the ordering.
Does that explain your observations?

Hi Klid,
A couple of suggestions for this year or next...

Firstly, some more late entrants...
1) NZ50 - how about putting this on for comparison?
2) Also the sharetrader top 5 - as last year.
3) And the broker top 5?

Secondly, maybe for next year, how about a 'sandpit' or whatever you want to call it - a separate parallel non-competitive group where people can create as many entries as they like, to test theories - e.g. the five strongest up-trending stocks, the five in the strongest downtrend, your own 5 biggest holdings, the five you think will do the worst, the five best performers from last year, the five worst performing from last year (someone did this I think), the five most undervalued, five that nobody picked, etc.

That'd be a good place for latecomers too.

Also - just double checking on dividend treatment - last year I think PT took the gross div, then took tax off (at 30%? 28%?), then credited that to the contestant's 'account'.

I think that's the right way to treat divs.

Hi Kild My picks, thanks for running this ALF AWF NWF SCL SUM

Hi, yeah I PM'd you. ALF isn't eligible as a stock because it did not have a $10 million market cap as at 1 Dec 2014. What do you want instead?
Also, cannot store this $ symbol in my user table :)
Do you want to be: 'In4abuck'?

Hawkeye's was the last one I added and I think subsequent ones are too late.

So the slightly late ones are:

Joshuatree: HNZ OGC SEK SCL PGW
bobbles: ATM PEB WYN PGW HNZ
blockhead: AIR BRL SPK HNZ RYM
Major von Tempsky: SPK DIL MFT AIA AIR
Hawkeye: XRO THL HLG PEB STU

Hi Klid
sorry to be a nuisance but I can't see my 'name' there - put in my picks at post 168 (a few days prior to Hawkeye).
I'd appreciate it if you could add them
cheers DH

Just returned from an extended holiday and have missed placing my entry. However I plan to piggy back on XROF's entry as his/her picks are the same as mine.
Also wanted to say a BIG thank you to KLID for setting this up and providing such an awesome resource. Fabulous work much appreciated.

43 JBWere FSF IFT DIL NPX 2.94%

They picked MELCA as well but that was not allowed. You'll see the discrepancy as well in the Summary table that I posted .. with 1084 stocks picked overall, being 1 less than the total should be.

Hi klid
i notice that results are posted to 2 decimal points and that BLT is registering as 0.02 when it should be 0.019 . It's just that if it has to go to 0.026 to change to 0.03, then that might never happen and we miss out on 25% or something .....
As it stands im getting a free 5% :t_up:

I fixed it yesterday, all that was wrong was that the POPUPS were showing the prices rounded to 2 decimal places rather than 3. The percentage yearly change was always correct.
It now rounds to 3dp so it should be consistent throughout the site now where prices have 3dp and percentages have 2.

Thanks for pointing it out.

p.s. *cough* look at the rankings :)

Nasty cough you have there, klid. Have you tried some BLT?:)
I have been subjected to gross injustice dropping from 1 to 144 on a couple of occasions.
All seems to be working pretty well though. Well done.

For comparison, the NZ50 was at +1.88% this morning pre-open - in 84th place.

Klid, would it be a lot of trouble to have Mr NZ50 as an entrant?

I guess not but that list can change. What about all the stocks in the contest. I did a simple query to get the average and I have put that at the top of the rankings/stock pages just under the box where you can filter stuff:

Average yearly movement for all stocks (https://www.stocktastic.co.nz/stocks): 0.57%

bunter
22-01-2015, 07:04 PM
Thanks Klid, I think that's a good yardstick too. Interestingly the NZ50 seems to be outperforming the stocklist by quite a bit.

BTW, the NZ50 component stocks don't matter do they, when calculating the NZ50 percentage gain for 2015?

It's just (nz50(today) - nz50 (Jan 1 2015)) / nz50(Jan 1 2015)
