Obviously, for a lot of reasons, people don’t want to disclose their holding on this board but I’d be curious to know what people own.

I’m not happy holding so much F&P but 2 years ago I was 100%. I’ve sold down and regretted it so I’m being stubborn until there is a big trend reversal. I sold all my ‘growth’ stocks last year and switched to dividend payers.

PS I didn’t realize until the other day that you were supposed to choose holding we owned for the stock picking competition. I chucked a couple of random one’s in there that no one else would pick so I had a chance to win.

Damn fine shares those IMO (assuming GEN = Genesis).

GNE
MELCA

and...gulp....PPL

NZ shares are approx 20% of my total portfolio. Basic strategy is "dividends first, some growth".

GNE and MELCA are roughly 60% of my NZ share portfolio, MELCA close to 50%. I regard both of these as gifts but MELCA in particular is no longer cheap.

I expect NZ shares to be down to 10% of my total by the end of this year. Several shares on that list are close to being "sells" with the NZX, in general, being pretty over-valued IMHO.

Off the top of my head - opinions only below:

THL 20%. Core long looking for $2.50 in 2016 as they repair ROCE.
FRE 18%. Core hold forever unless they give me reason to doubt.
AIR 14%. With oil down hoping for $3.50 in 2016
GNE 16%. Kupe will last longer than current estimates making yield more sustainable.
GTK 9%. Added after post listing troubles. Prospects unchanged despite timing issues.
MELCA 8%. Sold down after valuation got too stretched.
MRP 7%. Sold down after valuation got too stretched.
KMD 10%. Just added after recent plunge on profit warning. Strong seasonal trend in earnings.

These are mine. AIA,EBO,DIL,FRE,HNZ,MRP,RYM, are biggest and make about 60% of total.
Happy with all except ATM, PEB, SLI, SNK but holdings are only a few grand each.
Made a few mistakes last year selling down FRE, ABA and a some others that have since soared. Working on reducing holdings to about 10 or 15 good Dividend paying stocks only plus a couple of gambles like ALF, NWF, bought cheap last year in hope next year or 2 will reap rewards.

DNZ - 200,000

The noise of the dividends rolling in must be deafening.

That lot gives me around 63k per annum, tax paid of course, so to a 33% marginal tax payer it's the equivalent of approx. 95k gross. Not deafening, but comparable with owning a building of similar value. The fact they are PIEs helps no end. One day I'll get bold and buy some shares other than LPTs, but I shudder when I think about it. Anyway, I wouldn't know where to start  so I'm safe enough at present.

Warren Buffett makes a point of never recommending individual stocks to anyone. He does recommend low cost index funds or broad Exchange traded funds (assuming people aren't going to trade them) to new investors. I think that's the right approach. I haven't made a stock recommendation since mid 1987 when I convinced my mother to buy some RJI. True story.

That's a great link thanks. I've heard of that book, looks interesting. Interesting reference at the bottom of the page, too.

"But in 2014's letter "To the Shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.," (page 20) (http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/letters/2013ltr.pdf) Buffett revealed his instructions in his will to the trustee for his wife's benefit: "Put 10% ... in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard’s.) I believe the trust’s long-term results from this policy will be superior to those attained by most investors – whether pension funds, institutions or individuals – who employ high-fee managers."
