Had last week a chat with Chris Lee - and touched as well his planned talk in Christchurch. Here are the main points I heard from him:

* Chris sees 2018 as watershed year for investors
* How to recognize the signals of change
* Strategies for investors to best cope with change.
* Cherry picking in NZ (and I don't think he had the red stone fruit in mind )
* Strategies to fund your retirement by spending your capital ("without your money running out before you do")

Looking forward to see you there ...

It is this time of the year again - and we need your support!

South Island Branch NZSA - AGM, 26. July 2018, 7pm, Christchurch RSA, 74 Armagh Street; Christchurch

The South Island Branch committee of the NZSA is responsible for maintaining a regular event schedule (including site visits) in the South Island. Admittedly - most of our activities are currently concentrated around Christchurch (reflecting the center of gravity of South Island members as well as available volunteers), but we do have as well a quite active subbranch in Nelson (organizing regular meetings) and the odd event in Dunedin.

We do produce a regular newsletter - the "Southern Equity, and we do attend for you South Island AGM's of listed companies on behalf of the NZSA (providing proxy service).

Ah yes - and the 2019 NZSA Conference will be in Christchurch ...

Work in the committee can be quite rewarding - an opportunity to network with other investors and as well to learn more about some of our listed companies. Travel expenses (to national events) are paid for or subsidized. But as with all other activities - it is more fun if there are more helping hands.

We do need a new secretary, and Pam, at this stage the last remaining woman on our committee, indicated that she intends (after many years of service) to retire. Ready to step into her big shoes?

No pressure ladies;); Obviously - we are an equal opportunities not for profit organisation and are recruiting our volunteers from all genders and ethnicities prepared to help;

If you want to support the good work the NZSA is doing and are able and prepared to help us with the tasks above (full on the job training provided ), than let our chair Robin (robin.harrison@canterbury.ac.nz) know, or just send me a PM.

After a short and hopefully fruitful AGM with lots of new volunteers are we all looking forward to an interesting and provocative presentation by Andrew Ott from Forsyth Barr:

Andrew will talk about a number of NZ healthcare companies, covering "blue-chips" like FPH and RYM, moving on to the eternal new comer "PEB" and introducing two Christchurch based (and so far unlisted) companies in the venture capital stage: Upstream and MARS Bioimaging;

Not all might be investment grade, but I am sure there is lots to learn from all of them.

Hope to see you all ;

Sorry for inciting your ire. My deepest appologies for having been slack (no excuses I could come up with), and yes, normally I am a bit closer to the ball and give a couple of weeks notice ...

Here is another place you could check, which normally announces these events a bit earlier: http://www.nzshareholders.co.nz/shareholders-branchEvents.cfm?contactID=6&branchID=5

These events are organised from the NZSA South Island for its (paying) members, but non members are normally welcome. If you want to make sure you learn about these talks at your earliest convenience, than I recommend to support the good work of the NZSA for all shareholders and join them: http://www.nzshareholders.co.nz/members.cfm; South Island Members are informed about these talks through a monthly newsletter.

If you join you could even volunteer to make these social media releases and do a much better job than I do.

You could even join the committee and organise them - this would give you still more notice ;); Send me a PM if you are interested ...

An Evening with Sam Stubbs, Founding Director of Simplicity Fund Manager organised by NZSA South Island Branch.

From their members info:

Date: Tuesday the 19th November 2019
Time: 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Venue: The Papanui Club, Sawyers Arms Road, Christchurch
Facilities: Ample parking. The Bistro is open until 8.30 pm

Note the earlier time of 5 p.m. This is so we can fit in with Sam's busy schedule, and enable him to make his departing flight from Christchurch.

Sam Stubbs founded Simplicity- a not for profit fund manager, offering Kiwi Saver and other investments funds. Sam has a big vision and believes that New Zealand is poised to be “the Singapore” of the Pacific. He also has a unique perspective on Public Private Partnerships.

“When investing, the cockroach theory says, there is rarely just one under the
fridge”, says Sam Stubbs. He is not afraid to call out questionable governance and recently wrote a “please explain” letter to Sir John Key, the Chairperson of the Board of the ANZ Bank (NZ) asking for transparency around a recent land transaction by his ex-CEO.

In early October Sam announced that Simplicity will be entering the mortgage market by offering first home loans to its members at a rate well below the bank.

Expect this presentation to be both thought provoking and informative.

All welcome.

Edit: Unfortunately we have to postpone this meeting due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We will set a new date after the COVID-19 restrictions are over.

Just an early warning from the South Island branch:

Mark your diaries now for the next and “not-to-be missed” branch presentation in Christchurch at 7 p.m. on Tuesday 28 April 2020 at the St Barnabus Church Hal by Bruce Sheppard.

Bruce Sheppard the NZSA founder will speak to us about “Wealth”.

I expect that this will be about creating wealth, maintaining wealth and ultimately spending it. Perhaps how to do without too much wealth and about other forms of wealth. Whatever the final outcome, it is bound to be entertaining.

More details and final confirmation of the date, time and venue will be provided later.

Date: Tuesday the 28th April 2020
Time: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Venue: St Barnabus Church Hall, 8 Tui St (off Fendalton Road), Fendalton, Christchurch
