The year has gone by quickly!

The 2016 competition is open for entries now and until Monday 11th January 2016 at 09:00 am - if you use the website you can make and modify your selections up until this time.
The entry form to get on the website is here: https://www.stocktastic.co.nz/entry-form - Or you may post your selections here and I can enter it for you.

The rules, also listed here - https://www.stocktastic.co.nz/rules are:

Entries are made and are able to be subsequently modified by using the entry form (https://www.stocktastic.co.nz/entry-form) on this site. Or by posting in the appropriate thread on sharetrader.co.nz
Entries will close on Monday, 11th January 2016 at 9:00am.
Only one account (and entry per year) is permitted per person.
You may not use the alias that belongs to someone else on sharetrader.co.nz, or misrepresent another person.
Five selections must be made, the same stock cannot be selected twice. The entry form will enforce this.
There is a predefined list of stocks to select from, which will be those that are listed on the NZSX or NZAX and with a market capitalisation of at least $10 million as at 1st December 2015.
Everyone has the same entry price, that will be the closing price of the stock on the last day of trading before the competiton begins- this will be the close price on Friday 8th January 2016.
Competition closes with last traded prices on the last trading day in the 2016 calendar year.
Dividends and rights issues will be incorporated.
Any other random distributions will be incorporated, at the discretion of the contest administrator.
If a selection delists or otherwise somehow disolves; it will be kept but manually adjusted in your selections to reflect the realised situation resulting from the event causing this.

Feel free to contact me either through here or the contact form on the site. If you want access to your account on the site because I made one for you last year and the username is taken I can give you a password for it.

NZ competition.
In order to provide some variety I will donate a deposit in the amount of 15.00 for a cheapish bottle of wine based on the standings at 8pm on the last business day of June 2016.
This will go to the account of the entrant who is in need of some encouragement by being in the unfortunate position of running last.

You know, drown yer sorrows and all that

Hi Klid thanks for holding this comp, was wondering will you be adding AFT Pharmaceuticals to the stocks to chose from?

I have asked about this, both privately and on this thread, and although it is 'outside' the rule of it must be listed by December 1, I think this is a bit preposterous as it was still listed in 2015...

What is preposterous?
adjective
1.
completely contrary to nature, reason, or common sense; absurd; senseless; utterly foolish: (source (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/preposterous))

2.
To complain about a straight forward rule for a competition being run on a voluntary & unpaid basis, by an individual, on your behalf.

3.
To write 'a bit preposterous'. It is either preposterous or it is not preposterous.

Grrrrrhhhh !
Paper Tiger

And on a happy note:
Thank you very much to klid for running the show once more.

I think it is preposterous for entrants to expect kild to load your entries when they could load them themselves. He/she does a great job so it would be nice not to overload him/her.

See post #1 on first page for info on doing it.

I would put a "smile" here if I knew how to do it.

CEN - best of the power companies set for a recovery
PGW - the grim outlook for agriculture can only improve
RBD - plugging in to the next wave of growth
SKC - backing Australia's only hope for the future - gambling!
SPK - An old faithful. Everyone needs a connection, and this is the default one.

Yesterday morning (5 Jan) I accidently reverted the whole site to February 2015 without taking a backup -- big mistake. So I've been getting the missing data (Stock end prices for 2015, stock picks for 2016 and accounts) back. I think I've got most of it.

If you entered your picks yourself between about 4 Jan @ 10:00 and 5 Jan @ 10:00 - they may be lost - sorry - please re-enter.

As I manually reentered the picks, I would advise to check them at stocktastic.co.nz and make sure they are right. Because I also had to create user accounts for some people who had previously made them yourselves; you might not be able to access them, and you won't be able to password reset as the email entered won't match yours - as with the people who I made accounts for manually: if you want access to it, PM me or contact me somehow and I will give you a password.

Some issues with some of the entries:

airedale - You've picked PIL - it doesn't meet market cap rules of 10M.
Silver Spider and exactchange - You've picked CRP but that doesn't meet the market cap criteria either so please re-enter another pick.
I will PM all 3 of you.

Yesterday morning (5 Jan) I accidentally reverted the whole site to February 2015 without taking a backup -- big mistake....

You have my sincerest sympathies.
I have a few (actually, a lot of) stories: both about myself and about customers; some amusing and some far from funny with regard to backups.

Thank you once again for the time and expense you put into running this contest.

Hi KILD
You probably have it in hand, but the SCL divvie is 6.5 cents which you have added, but there is also a 4.5 cent special divvie both divvies ex on the same day.
Thanks
Thanks, I am automating the dividend fetching now, basically every now and then the site will fetch dividends for a particular stock, alphabetically, but I was treating the ex-dividend date as being unique so there couldn't be two dividends paid by the same company on the same ex-div date... so I've now handled that and the 4c special dividend is in.

All entries are updated. Except exactchange still has CRP as a pick. I tried to PM them but there is no account. Does anyone know who that is?

Update on the T20 again as the last entries pile in and the data stabilises on Klid's awesome Stocktastic website. 9 brokers picks are included.

One more update Sunday night if I can get to it, remember this closes on Monday, so get your picks in here or on www.stocktastic.co.nz (http://www.stocktastic.co.nz) .

HBL leaps out to a clear lead with 50 picks, 26% of all punters/brokers picks, and 5% of the total picks. A close run scrap for the 2-6 placings has emerged and some diverse picks for the 7-10 placings rounding out the T10. Only 5 picks separate the T11-T20!

Hey Paper Tiger, yeah I have it from 1 Jan 2016 to 31 Dec 2016 but I will change the start date for that to be today, but I might have to do that tomorrow or the next day as I am working in Wellington today/tomorrow away from my normal computer. Likewise I will put in the entries that I haven't already at the same time.

Thanks miner - Tower is going ex-dividend on the 18th. I'm getting the dividends too early so I've done something to handle that.
Also I put the dividends (https://www.stocktastic.co.nz/dividends) page back, but it does need a tidy up display wise which I will do later.

Hi Klid. Love your work with this project - fantastic.

I'm very pleased you've reinstated the Dividends page - very helpful.

I realise it's not your job to provide us all with data that we can find elsewhere but if you're going to do some work on the Dividends page I wonder if you might be able to incorporate a change that I think would be very helpful:

When we click on a column header currently only the data on that page is sorted. Would it be possible to have the system sort ALL the data in the file rather than just the data on the individual page. That would enable us to see all the divies for an individual stock in one go, or see all divies in date order etc. If it's a drama for you just say so - but it would be neat if you could achieve this.

Merci beaucoup
Pierre

Yep no dramas, I've done that but also ordered by ex-div date descencing rather then ascending so might stop most of the need to sort it by clicking the headers - I guess unless you want to sort by stock to see all the dividends paid for a particular stock over time.

Blocky is in the top 20, think I will start running investment seminars, $250 a seat, limited to 1st 400 sold, to be held at Geraldine T & C Club at a date yet to be notified.

Should be tax deductable.

In the meantime, off to Motatapu MTB race this weekend, any other ST people having a crack at it ?

hi,

I suggest a rule change. If your pick is delisted you should be able to reinvest the proceeds by making another pick. Feel a bit done on DIL!

Lewylewylewy
13-05-2016, 06:19 PM
I was chatting to a friend about stock picking the other day and he said something interesting...

We were talking about the competition and he asked me why I picked the stocks I did. I explained and he said, how do I know it's not just luck? My response was that my predictions had come true based on the ideas I had. The end justifies my decisions.

Then he said something interesting... The other people in the competition would have all had ideas too, some were correct and some weren't. Therefore there's no way to have a single competition without ruling out the possibility that there's no skill in picking sticks and it's all just luck.

A thousand monkeys on a thousand keyboards will eventually write the complete works of Shakespeare (or pick the right stocks, in this case).

Therefore, the only way to reduce the probability that the competition is all luck, would be to list the reasons for picking stocks, have the winners reasons verified as the cause, then to have exactly the same competition again and only declare a winner if someone won 2 times in a row.

Brokers are trekking along well so far

and Glad to be in front of them ....just ..

Talking about luck in comps ,,,I think of course it all comes down posters history over all the yearly comps ....for my NZX comps I spent max 10mins on deciding my picks,,and I don't have cent in any (purely because there is just so few companies that interest me on the NZX) ..

ASX the opposite many of my picks I hold(or have held) positions ..and have studied them many months before picking for the comp..

Lewylewylewy
21-05-2016, 09:26 PM
The thing about brokers is that they have a LOT of money to shift. They can't be dodging in and out of smaller, less liquid stocks like the rest of us. That rules out a bunch of companies. Therefore they probably don't have the research available on those for the competition. Also they have to pick their stocks in a way that is justifiable in case something goes wrong. They can't have a punt at something.

That being said, looking at some of the brokers picks are... a little odd, in my opinion. I found this years competition really easy to see what was a good pick based largely on tailwinds and what I think is a good business. However, will those tailwinds could easily change in 6 months - there would have been safer options to maintain a solid return for the year, but then I figured that that's no way to win the competition. Brokers tend to go for those safer, good options, like RYM.

You kind of need a competition for traders and a competition for investor, in which the investors pick stocks for the year (as per the current competition) and traders can trade their stocks weekly or whatever.

Yes on Hotcopper they do a "short term trading comp" then whatever you pick get max 30 days to move ....anyone that breaks 10%+ makes it to the list ..then comes down to the poster with the greatest max month growth picks over the last 12months ....etc

Works well on the ASX ...but NZX way to small

Not really the place, but... In real life, are there any differences trading ASX vs NZX? Any differing tax laws, etc? I imagine there's the issue of currency conversation in buying / selling and dividends... but appart from that, anything else to watch out for?

Snoopy
24-05-2016, 06:13 PM
Hi Klid,

I notice that you haven't adjusted SKC for the cash issue entitlement.

The cash issue entitlement was 1:10 at $4.40, for those on the share register on 16th May. This means that all shareholders who take up their rights (by paying $4.40 for their new shares) because they were on the register on 16th May will have either:

1/ an 'extra gain' if the share price stays above $4.40, or
2/ a corresponding 'extra loss' if the share price dips below $4.40

If my algebra is correct, then if the share price is 'P' today, for anyone choosing SKC at the start of the competition, the value for those competition competitors ex-cash issue will now be:

P + 0.1(P-4.40)
= 1.1P -0.44

Example 1:
Using the $4.62 closing share price today, the correct closing share price figure figure for competition comparison purposes should be:

(1.1 x 4.62) - 0.44 = 5.082 -0.44 = $4.642 (i.e. +2.42cps over market closing price)

So not a huge difference. But if the share price were to rise back towards $5 the effective gain will be out of proportionally larger.

Example 2:
(1.1 x 5.00) - 0.44 = 5.50 -0.44 = $5.06 (i.e. +6.00cps)

That would be like getting an extra dividend for the year.

Is such an adjustment possible? Keep up the good work

SNOOPY

PS Looks like this only affects naki and I, as only two of us selected SKC.

I don't really go for yield plays on the ASX so the issues round not receiving tax credits(as a NZ resident) ...currency conversion not a big issues as you should always have a AUD call account with your trading platform ... think I shifted the bulk of my NZD to AUD back in the early 2000's....

Going from NZX to ASX is like comparing hamilton to Auckland ....so many companies esp round the resources sectors (which I like anyway)
and anything decent on the NZX is dual listed anyway ....

NZX has been great for yield returns in recent years ...

Have been ignoring my sorry picks but just had a look :scared:. Up just 6% - whereas my NZ portfolio is up 25% - heaven knows why I left out TIL and CVT (which I own) and included IQE (never owned) and AIR (just a handful)!!! Lackadaisical summer thinking after a great year?

So no FIF rules or anything for ASX trading?

Hello Lewylewylewy.
re the FIF Rules, the ASX and trading shares.
I have invested in the sharemarket for more than 30 years. Generally short term trading is not for me, but there are times when one sees opportunities that look like shorter term trades. Historically I left them alone because I didn't want to be classified by the IRD as a trader.
A few years ago I decided to take the bull by the horns and set up a Company specifically for trading shares, although even those investments have sometimes remained in the porfolio for several years. The Company invests in companies listed on the NZX (the NZ Stock Exchange) and the ASX (the Australian Stock Exchange). Any profits or losses on the NZX-listed shares are taxed just like any business and I am happy with that - someone has to pay for the police force, the roads and the hospitals.
The FIF Rules
Profits and losses on shares listed on the ASX are taxed according to whether the company is governed by the FIF rules. The IRD website provides a list which is updated annually of companies which are EXCLUDED from the FIF regime, which means that the FIF rules DO APPLY to companies that are NOT on that list. I must admit the double-negatives here are a little tricky to understand at first ..
The Effect.
In respect of the companies which are EXCLUDED from the FIF rules , any profits or losses derived from trading in their shares will be taxed in the same way that NZX-listed shares are taxed. No problem there.
For the other companies that are NOT EXCLUDED under the FIF rules, that means that they are subject to those rules. Here is a rough precis of how it works. The IRD (or your accountant) will take the Cost Price of the investment at the start of the financial year (or when you purchased it), and then calculate tax thereon at 5% of that "opening value". That figure is then added to the taxable income and taxed at the regular tax rate - 28% in the case of companies. The profitability or otherwise of that investment is irrelevant.
Owning shares in companies that are NOT FIF exempt and therefore are subject to the FIF rules can have advantages. Under the FIF rules if the investment is sold at a loss tax remains payable at 5%. Not so good. But if the investment shows a good profit, eg. by doubling in value, the 5% tax rate is still applicable. Now that is a very low rate of tax on a very good profit.

I believe the FIF rules were conjured up by Mr Cullen and his crew as a means of taxing New Zealanders investors with offshore stakes in companies like Microsoft and Apple. Despite making healthy capital gains those shareholders were not subject to NZ tax on their profits because those companies didn't pay dividends.

I hope this helps Lly.
I have noticed how well you are doing in the competition and do appreciate your sharing your thoughts so freely.

Thanks for that. I'm keen to avoid FIF as much as possible because I think it's Ann unreasonable way to tax. I think I'll just stay in the toddlers pool and keep out of the ASX... knowing me is end up taking in a way the government doesn't want and losing more money than I gained in taxes.

It looks like you haven't made any cash issue adjustment for 1:10 rights issue yet klid.

There is another way you could do it. Those that did not take up the rights offer received a cash payment.

This is from the 8th June announcement:

"The clearing price under the Retail Bookbuild was NZ$4.66 per share - a premium of NZ$0.26 per share over the application price of NZ$4.40 under the Offer. Accordingly, Eligible Retail Shareholders who elected not to take up their entitlements in full and Ineligible Retail Shareholders will receive NZ$0.26 for each entitlement not taken up by them."

The offer was 1:10. So a 26c payment received is equivalent to an extra 2.6cps after tax "extra dividend". OK that is a small amount in the grand total of things. But it would help to keep things accurate.

Fierce competition at the bottom end though between Silverblizzard888 and Awesome for the June consolation prize of 15.00 for the purchase of one mediocre or two cheap bottles of wine.
Just a bit of midwinter fun, whoever is last at 8pm on last trading day of June to PM MBJ with bank account number for bank deposit.
