Sanderson Farms has grown from a small general feed and seed business in 1947 to one of the nation's leading food corporations in fiscal 2014 and is listed on NASDAQ under the symbol SAFM.

It is the 3rd largest poultry producer in the United States. Its prepared chicken product line includes institutional and consumer packaged partially cooked or marinated chicken items for distributors and food service establishments. It has export market as well.

After its correction during months of September, October and November 2015, it is appreciating again and trading around 81.39.

Can we expect breaking its 52 week high (87.40)?

Another company in the same industry (TSN) is trading around 53.94 closer to its 52 week high (54.42).

These companies are benefiting from falling grain prices now.

Could it be year for consumer staples especially for tasty food stocks in 2016?

On Friday SAFM shares fell due to speculation on reappearance of bird flu in the USA. France is also having bird flu. There is a new Bird-Flu Case has reported in Indiana. Other regional poultry producers in Asia Pacific region will become winners. Shares of other poultry processors in the USA also fell sharply on Friday partly due to fear that the Indiana case could lead foreign countries to maintain bans on imports of U.S. chicken.

I found FRM.ax exports its products to Asia as well.

AT the end of the day Dow recovered from 565 point plunge and closed around 250 still down. But chicken related stocks such as SAFM and TSN defied the market trend. Both went up at the end of the day. May be it is time to look for some boring stocks globally.

Chicken and eggs are cheaper than other meat and fish. Quality healthy consumers will go behind chicken and egg menu rather than other unhealthy menu in the coming years.

Thank you for the link. It is going to be chicken year again. Investors are getting interested on poultry related stocks again. Hopefully, we may see breaking of 52 weeks high for some poultry stocks. I will update them later.

No. I didn’t. I am in the process of finding new broker. It has chance to pass its 52 week high. It has given astonishing return to investors who bought one year before, two year before, five year before and very recently three months before.

I saw heavy buying interest on poultry related stocks almost every markets such as developed, frontier and emerging markets on Friday. It is better to identify these types of stocks before others.

Good luck!

It reported new 52 weeks high. Isn’t it? There could be more stocks in this type in almost all types of markets such as developed, emerging and frontier markets which can break their 52 weeks high and all time high.

Market had sell-off and volatility but some stocks were bucking the trend. One by one, they have begun to outperform the market. Based on the earning outlook and industry outlook we could expect positive outlook for poultry sector in 2016/17. In addition, the poultry market outlook over the next decade remains mostly positive.

This is one area where investors can get higher returns in the coming ten years.

Two main factors on the demand side are growing population and increased protein consumption in diets worldwide. Supply sides will strength through lower feed costs. By 2024, an additional 26 million metric tons of poultry will be produced worldwide.

Hi Stoploss

Today it closed at 1.77 up by more than 5%.Have you noticed all types of broken eggs (flue panic, market panic, volatility and sell off) have created and are creating opportunities in poultry stocks?

This is a year for undervalued stocks mainly for attractive food stocks. Those who have invested in correct type of stocks will outperform broader market in 2016/17. We should find out some attractive food related stocks including under researched attractive food stocks globally to enjoy food oriented bull market. Entire poultry group has become very bullish in the USA. American chickens are having a good time. It should spread to other markets as well. Currently, I am trying to find food related stocks in other Asian markets as well.

Listed Americans chickens went up by more than 2-3% on Friday. Even one golden egg traded higher. Every time they fall or have some volatility will follow by strong rally. Very recently SAFM went down to around $85 it smashed $90 again and was trading around $93 by the end of the day on Friday.

Weak sister Pilgrim's Pride Corporation (PPC) is also following strong brothers and it also can pass 52 weeks high sooner than later. Lately, these chickens have outperformed the share indexes during period of volatility, weak market and strong market. This is a kind of new development for poultry related stocks.

As I said before some stocks should break not only their 52 weeks high but also their all time high. We saw few all time high records and we should see some more.

In this global sell-off, SAFM was one food stock which stood out from the rest along with TSN. Both are chickens. Both went up on a double the volume of average volume. Even Hormel Foods Corporation (HRL), producer of various meat and food products ended up by becoming one of the winners in global stock markets.

Poultry stocks in the USA went down sharply on Friday mainly share prices of Tyson foods due to allegation. It triggered after an analyst’s comments on Tyson. Law suit has affected poultry stocks in the USA. The lawsuit filed last month alleged that Tyson colluded with Koch Foods and others in the broiler chicken business.

However, Tyson spokesman disputed the allegations in the complaints and the speculative conclusions reached by the analyst, and said; we will defend ourselves in court.

Entire group has come to much oversold situation now. I believe it is going to create another great opportunity just like in previous occasions during last two years. Value investors will wait patiently until dust settle.

There could be some effect on Animal Feed prices as well.

Pivotal Research is the only brokerage that has “sell” on Tyson. Among 11 brokerages covering the company (Tyson) At least six brokerages rate the stock “buy” or higher and four “hold”.

Will its(TSN) competitors benefit?

This is one of the stocks which may break all time high again and again in the long run although we cannot rule out some volatility. It is surprise to see there is a good demand for poultry stocks despite some bird flu reports in the USA.

This share looks to have the big picture animal protein industry tail wind from killing pigs in China leading to higher prices for chicken in the USA. But that chart referenced in your link over the last three months looks dismal, with SAFM grossly underperforming the "Food-Meat Products Market" sector (down 25.4% vs 15.4% for the sector).

The latest headline financial reporting period profit was poor, leading me to believe that yesterday's recent share price out performance was part of a relief rally that the results were not worse than expected.

"market prices for tray pack products sold at retail stores were marginally higher on better product mix as well as healthy demand and supply balance."

With such a strong worldwide shortage of protein, having prices just 'marginally higher' does not sound encouraging. "Marginally higher' prices look to be more than offset by feed costs rising 6.3%. However the capital position of the company looks very sound. So they have the capability to withstand losses over the medium term.

"increased promotions for chicken at quick-serve restaurants are likely to drive growth in poultry market in 2020"

Translation: Sell SAFM, Buy YUMC ;-)
