Starting a thread on people's thoughts where he might end up as Chairman on NZ Co and also Board appointment in Aus. (according the knighthood announcement on stuff)
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/93326903/former-pm-john-key-tops-queens-birthday-honours-with-knighthood-for-services-to-the-state

Clearly he likes, is arguably good at - negotiations, big business, tourism, being an emotive leader / ambassador, foreign investment, foreign relations, scale, NZ Inc.. etc. he also loves opening factories (google images on that) and clearly public speaking

Possibles?

Fletcher Building - Multinational, needs financial acumen for scale/confidence turnaround, tailwinds from Govt budget and construction/immigration, feeds into his experience with Canterbury recovery, angle on housing challenges in NZ

Fonterra - Similar per above. Large growth into Asian markets (where he has experience and other commitments), huge part of NZ Inc and economic ecosystem, from grass roots up, would be a great ambassador for the brand

SkyCity - See through on the convention centre in AKL, sits in the tourism growth agenda, hooks into Asia markets and High Rollers/influencers, needs acumen on Aus investments (Darwin/Adelaide)

FPH - Growth, significant export earning for NZ Inc, 'altruistic' in the health sector? Negotiate / influence trade concerns

One of the Retirement Operators? Ryman, Sum? Politically astute move on social infrastructure, leverage his financial depth, influence future social policy here?

Haven't looked at who the current chairpersons are to see who might be close to retiring/exiting.... just started some thoughts

Bank of America If Sir John is offered the top job at B of A should he accept it? Maybe but if B of A is compelled to take back the junk they stuffed through the Feds discount window at par then Sir John and the B of A would be in deep doo doo.

Boop boop de do

I think he'll end up as Chairman of the board at AIR in due course.

Hope AIR picks up the tab for some of the taxpayer paid travel he's entitled to (for life?)

This knighthood is a signal from the 'other side' - AIR share price will now 'surge on':D

He'd get free travel as an AIR director anyway so being creative about it AIR are actually saving money :D and his intellectual horsepower will add to what's an already highly impressive board and senior management team...and then there's his valuable international contacts and the fact that most of the non govt owned shares are held by overseas institutions who will welcome a very familiar face on the board..and then if you go to the annual meeting you get to shake Sir John's hand if you're lucky :)
Looks like shareholders are Winner's every which way you look at it.

Maybe he might be up for SUM other appointment too ?

John Boy did a good job in selling down some of the Govt's interest in AIR. .....along with the power companies

Wonder who benefited the most ......hmmmm

Politicians have a fairly dismal record as board members.

If Mister Key is appointed to the board of any company that I have money with, I would seriously consider divestiture.

JK is already appointed to Air, his tenure is about to commence.

The article says he will be on 3 Boards in total including Air - with one as Chairman in NZ and one as Director in AUS. Been searching about more since this morning looking at
- who the largest Co's in NZ are,
- who current Directors are,
- who knows how and who is on who else's Board,
- who can afford to pay a decent fee etc etc...

Here is the top 10 in NZ by Index weight - click on the constituents tab.
http://us.spindices.com/indices/equity/sp-nzx-50-index

I'm leaning towards the below as a punt.

NZ - A2 Milk (they only have 6 Directors, are growing, China, Chair is in the UK - could be time for NZ based Chair)
Aus - ANZ (his mate Tony Carter on Board, banking sector, knows David Hisco, NZ largest bank)

This is pure guesswork. There are non-profit Boards also of course.

I also suspect JK will make an excellent Board member/chair. He came from a background of business and finance pre politics... unlike many politicians who do not have this background in their DNA.

The coming weeks will tell..

Stupid post, please delete it, this is about shares not general discussions!

Yes. Should be in off market discussions.

Yes. Should be in off market discussions. Agree. Even less relevant to the NZX, there was a thread on Nelson Mandela, great man that he was, that lasted for several days before being transferred to the Off-market discussions.

" thank you for choosing to travel with Air New Zealand today,
in the unlikely event of a share price emergency subsequent to an ex politician being appointed to the board please act on the following instructions
1. adopt the brace position
2. contact your broker to sell your shares.

Enjoy your flight

Highly relevant. What's your largest shareholding in an NZX Organisation? What if JK is appointed to that NZX Organisation as Chair of the Board today. What might it do to the market confidence, the shareprice impact short and medium term.

Might be working looking at the Institute of Directors and wondering what role a Board plays in the governance, direction, risk, investment and liquidity decisions... which ultimately affects Org performance, leading to EPS growth/decline, which leads to sentiment, which leads to SP. Also, Directors set dividends, to pay to us, the shareholders.

Question still remains, which NZ Org might he come Chairman of.. and how might that affect you, the shareholder. Given this is a thread about the 'NZX' that's why I started it here. Rather than worry which thread it's in.. I'm more interested in where people might think he ends up..and what the impact to shareholders might be
