Merry Christmas to all of you as well.

Personally 2017 was a great year - overall awesome portfolio returns which lead into selling off half of it to be able to purchase my first home.

Merry Christmas to everybody on this forum, but especially to

the many posters on here who provide with their posts food for thought and help me and others this way to become better investors
the experts on this forum who freely share their knowledge and expertise with us
the active investors who work either in the NZSA or in ad hoc groups with other investors and boards and make NZ a better place to invest
the posters who use the political threads for constructive discussions respecting democratic principles (no matter whether we agree or not - you need always both sides for a fruitful discussion). People like you give life to our democracy and make NZ a better place to live
to the Trump and BREXIT supporters. While you might feel currently miserable and lonely in your imploding bubble ... life goes on, and they say there is always an opportunity for redemption ;); There are so many more good people outside your bubble - just find the courage and take the leap ...

From an investors perspective - this was the best year for me since I make a living from my investments (and I couldn't really complain about the years before either ;)); From a citizens perspective - I am glad that at least our (local) democracy still works, and while I am no big fan of the new government - I do see as well the good things they are doing. Not worried about New Zealand. All the best to the new government!

Taking a more international perspective - while we are used to have crooks and scumbags as leaders of many banana (and other) republics, it hurts to see what once used to be the leader of the free world competing with the scum for the lowest level of decency. It hurts as well to see a once flourishing UK so busy to support their rednecks and political liars that they forget to do whats good for their people. Division instead of unity appears to be the theme of the year - these are developments which worry me.

They say it is darkest before dawn ... lets hope that this is NOW. We don't need still more selfish idiots and populists destroying the fabric of our western society, but we need more democrats and decent people to run the world. And we need the free world to grow and to stand together instead of one big bully destroying it all - supported by his crooked friends.

Lets hope for a better 2018 and strive together against corruption, populism, stupidity and for a better and more decent world for our children and grandchildren!

Happy New Year everybody! There always is hope!

Great post and yes indeed a good time of year to count one's blessings.
Speaking of things free and blessings lets not forget what this time of year really celebrates, the free gift of salvation through the birth of Jesus Christ https://godsabundantblessings.com/tag/how-wide-how-long-how-high-and-how-deep-gods-love-is/ from whom the best blessings come.
Remiss if speaking of things free that bless us if we didn't thank Admin, Vince, and STMOD for their work behind the scenes too.

"So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun.

And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young.

A very Merry Christmas
And a happy new year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear"

Please accept – with no obligation of any kind, whether oral or written, actual or potential, explicit or implicit – our very best wishes for a non-culture-specific, environmentally-conscious, socially-responsible, low-stress, zero-carbon, non-addictive, gender-neutral, politically-correct happy holiday celebration of the winter solstice, within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion or secular practice of your choice (with due consideration for the religious or secular persuasions or traditions of others, or for their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all, or for genuine and legitimate differences of opinion as to the timing or significance of the solstice), and a fiscally-successful, personally-fulfilling and medically-uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally-accepted calendar year 2018, but not without due respect for the calendar choices of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped to make America great (not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only America in the western or any hemisphere), and without regard to the wishee’s race, creed, color, age, religious faith, choice of computer platform, physical ability or sexual preference or prowess. By accepting this greeting and not entering any defense or other plea with 14 days or such other period as may be applicable as specified in federal or state law, you are accepting the following terms: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher actually to implement any of the wishes personally or for others. It is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. It is warranted to perform as expected within the parameters for the reasonable application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever shall first have occurred. Warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher. This greeting constitutes the entire wish. It is void where prohibited by law. Should any part of this greeting be held unlawful or otherwise invalid, all remaining parts shall continue to have effect in terms of generally accepted wishing traditions or conventions to the full extent permissible under law.
