View Full Version : 2019 NZ Stock Picking Contest

Hi all...well, its that time :-)
Would love to get a big crowd for this coming years competition...I am proposing the same rules as 2018's comp.

1) Pick FIVE different NZX-listed equity instruments (incl. Smartshares and foreign companies listed in NZ). Companies/Funds with a market cap of less than $10m may not be selected.
2) Each pick has an equal weighting.
3) Picks in by 7pm January 2nd 2019 (New Zealand time); ie, prior to trading opening.
4) You may not use the alias that belongs to someone else on sharetrader.co.nz, or misrepresent another person.

Returns calculations
1) Each will start with a notional portfolio of $10,000
2) Returns will be calculate from the last closing price of 2017 (which i think is Dec 31st 2018) to the last closing price of 2019.
3) Its a 'total return' comp, so Dividends will be included - but NOT benefits from imputation credits or other tax-specific benefits.
4) Rights issues are included according to the 'Snoopy Formula'. This does not increase capital, but recognises a capital gain/loss on the rights for the year.
5) If a selection delists or otherwise somehow dissolves; it will be kept but manually adjusted in your selections to reflect the realised situation resulting from the event causing this.
6) Winner is the person who has the largest %age increase.

There are THREE ways to enter:
1) via this survey form: https://1drv.ms/xs/s!AuUMI8ycnlsfhf0p51W9YIZ-zc6xhQ?wdFormId=%7B75CCFB9B%2DC5EC%2D4437%2DBC1A%2 DCA1E8E32CC4F%7D
2) email to sylvestercat2018@gmail.com
3) private message to me on sharetrader

I won't publish what people are picking before Dec 31st.

Happy Christmas / New Year everyone...and happy picking.

Your faithful puddytat,
Sylvester

I should say - please don't select TGH! I know its been delisted, it somehow crept onto the list.
And if there are any other shares not listed in the sheet, please let me know via this forum.

Okay, so it seems I have mnissed off the veritable "Colonial Motor" (Ticker CMO).
Have now added this into the picklist - if this causes anyone to re-think their picks, please get back to me!!

Entries so far at 116 (incl. broker picks). Some interesting stats / questions to ponder coming out of the 2018 comp, so might be some good thinking to do...

If you've entered - please check that your 'alias' is here: https://sites.google.com/view/sharetrader-picks-2018/2019-entry-list
If its not, get in touch with your friendly puss and we will sort it :-)!

Bad omen for NZX tomorrow ..unless US markets have a good night

Problem when we close for 2 days while world still carries on.

I think it is best to have a "conviction" portfolio, where you would not mind the market being closed for 2 years, rather than 2 days.!!!...lol.

Oliver Mander
02-01-2019, 09:38 PM
Hi all...it looks like we have 182 entries, although still waiting on a couple of confirmations.

I did put the comp on a certain other forum also, and there was a desire to enter a "CASH" option (2 people did this from this forum, selecting all Cash).
It is a share picks comp though...although some would argue this may not be a bad strategy this coming year!

So what I'll do is show a "market" line (like I do with the NZX50), showing the impact of a cash return only, at the current BNZ term deposit rate of 3.4% per annum.
Hope this is okay.

Pity you didn't enter. Nothing like having skin in the game.

SC will come up with a link at some stage and that will give you access.

Sorry for delay all.
Will get it up and running soon - certainly during this week.
I've been playing with a new website format to make it easier for everyone to see the results...but at the very least, will get the old format up and running so you can see who has picked what!

Just to whet your appetite....
- a total of 110 shares have been picked - with 3 clear favourites!
- 195 entries (including 11 "trackers" - 8 brokers, NZX50, Cash and Sharetrader top 5)

Will get a link to opening prices soon...

RIGHT!!
And we're off.

Please see attached the link below for this years competition: https://sites.google.com/view/nzsharepicks/home.
If I figure out a different way to do the website, it might change - but in the interests of speed thought that was worth publishing.

Note that only 7 entries came in after trading opening, which I think we can live with.
I say that because my first pick was PLX, but I made my entry in mid-December, just in case anyone is suspicious :).

Opening prices are also shown on the website - I am certain they are correct, but if anyone begs to differ then simply let me know.

This graph is on the website, but is worth reflecting on here - 50% of the picks are in the following 17 companies....

A BIG thanks to SCat for running this competition. Much appreciated.

This time of the year is a great time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. I've been entering in this comp for 5 years and have learned heaps.

2014
Placed 4th equal with 99.76% return.

2015
Placed 18th (shared with Xerof) with 54.24% return.

2016
Placed 195th with a -25.7% my first negative return was due to WYN which went insolvent during the year (fortunately I dropped WYN from my actual portfolio well before its demise.)

2017
Finished 37th (out of over 200 entries) with a 72.8% return.

2018
52nd with a 5.9% return.

Over this 5 years my actual share portfolio has performed ahead of my competition results primarily due to my being able to continually review and quit non performers during the year.

2019 is going to be very interesting! Good luck all.

Entry in there somewhere

Don’t enter as winner because too often in the past nasty horrible posters try to win arguments by saying ‘and by the way where are you placed in the competition you idiot’

Pleased with my third last year though ...improvement on my top 10 ranking in 2017

You not silly at all t_j - you gave yourself a real chance of winning the competition excluding ARV from your 5 picks.

must be desperate if tempting fate is a way for the ARV share price to rocket ahead

If I find some wifi, will run it Tuesday next week, but more likely to be the following week.

Well, time for the first set of results. I've put a bit of commentary on the website link as well, fairly innocuous stuff and all very objective.
PLX has dominated the first week, with the top 10 all having selected it.

Remember that you can enter your username in the yellow cell, and it pops up with a bit more detail on your individual performance.

I should say that the "annualised %age" figure is capped at a LOSS of 100% - you can't lose more than your $$$, as per the discussion in the 2018 thread.
This early in the year of course, it means that if companies share prices declined at the same rate, the loss is capped at 100% in the annualised figure.
I'll update the rankings to be based off the CURRENT %age shortly.

I protest. There is a stench of Animal Privilege pervading these forums. They seem to get the media attention and there is a growing trend of using animalist words such as "the herd has picked", all at the expense of other minorities.

Today I am calling a rallying of arms for us minorities. We should see diversity in these posts such as "the fleet has picked". Time to end this animalsogynist behaviour!

Results for the week ended Jan 18th...a few changes this week, with soi6 taking over the lead, and your humble puddy tat moving into the top 5.
The common denominators appear to be the increases in PLX, ATM and SKO for the year so far, with SKO rising a whopping 10% over the last week.

Hi all...results for the week ended Jan 25th are shown below. soi6 continues the grip of the top spot, but there's been total change in the next 4 spots...looks like the continued rise of SKO has helped a-plenty in this result, coupled with small declines in ATM and PLX during the week. The general market rose by only 13 points during the week, which probably held back conservative punters also.

Crikey! I get a bit scared this high up in the listings this early in the year..... it's a long way to fall (and I have a feeling IKE might be my downfall.)

Interesting that while ATM is the constant, the top 5 show quite diverse selections.

Thanks again SC.

I wouldn't think that CVT will turn that bad - I guess they have neither knights nor dames on board, just a boring underperforming agricultural stock with credibility issues ...

Results are out for the week to Feb 8th...and guess what, its all change! Bosse1 is now leading, while LeftField continues to be in the top group. My own picks sent me from 10th to 58th after this week, so that's me gone :-)!! Thanks THL....

ATM is a common factor underpinning these good results...but other than that seems to be case of keeping an 'even keel' on other picks rather than losing a shedload. A good theory at times - cut yourself off at the ankles to cut everyone else off at the knees...

Well, that longed-for stability at the top has not yet occurred as the top 5 are completely swapped out from last week...except for Left Field, whose portfolio picks are weathering all storms.
ATM and SKO are common themes...and the partial recovery of THL has helped others lower down in the table.

Yip, could be the year of the great battle between cats and dogs...although given positioning, suspect we're hardly threatening the real battle up the top of the leaderboard!

Well, here are the results to March 15th. Full results will be on the website shortly: https://sites.google.com/view/nzsharepicks

It seems like a terrible week to be posting this. What's happened in my former home town this week is an insult to the people of that city, one that will unfairly tarnish its image for years to come. I'm sure we're all horrified and share deep grief for the victims and their families.

In terms of this comp, the only major change to the top 5 is that Muscat Jumper has forced their way in, at the expense of stef. The main difference during the week appears to be the significant increase in AIA supporting the Muscat, whereas stef suffered from a loss in value in ATM during the week (as did many of us). Soi6 continues to lead the way however...actually increasing their margin over 2nd place! PLX remained solid for soi6 during the week, more than offsetting the weekly loss in ATM.

MUCH more importantly, a certain puddy tat seems to have opened up a significant lead over a low-slung hound...strength in SML could not overcome a bad week in all other picks by the barking one, whereas puddy tat was helped by the rise and rise of MFT, a solid PLX and even a recovery of sorts for THL...
Its alright beagle me old mate, we're nowhere near challenging the leaders right now! We can commiserate together.

Firstly Thanks SylvesterCat for running the competition.
Great software design that reflects talent and imagination....

Secondly one of my picks Orion Health (OHE) is about to delist ...

So confirming the rules:

"If a selection delists or otherwise somehow dissolves; it will be kept but manually adjusted in your selections to reflect the realised situation
resulting from the event causing this."

Am I right in assuming
(1) OHE price at delisting $1.23, and a YTD profit of 5.1% is the result for the stock for this year.
(2) There is no option to pick another stock.

Thanks and regards

Well, that was an interesting couple of weeks...and that's even before yesterday's shenanigans. For the first time in living memory, I think we have TWO brokers in the top 5!!! Well done to Craigs INvestment Partners and Hobsons Wealth...that means of course there has been quite the change at the top. SML affected a few, but it was the rise of the classic blue chips that has had the biggest impact - MFT, MEL, FPH, etc.

On the 'cat v dog' front, this has greatly helped sylvester pull out a bit of a lead over the beagle...MFT has been kind to me too.

Oliver Mander
10-04-2019, 12:11 AM
Well, there has been a total clear out of the top 5 this week. It wasn't so much that the top 5 failed miserably last week (they haven't), its more of a case that everyone who picked PLX in the comp caught up with the established leaders. For soi6, this was great news - moving from 3rd to 1st. MikeybyCrikey added to his previous solid performance also...and then its a spectacular gap to 3rd place....ummmm...and that is a certain purring puss. Yapping beagles are 89 places behind (its alright beagle, its the one chance I get, I'll never do it again).

PLX also helped one broker - MSL Capital - which means that we have the unprecedented situation where three brokers are int he top 20! A good year to be an analyst...

One other observation is that (similar to last year) the NZX50 is still managing to come in ahead of around two thirds of us (in 69th place).

Hi all...results to April 21st. The top 5 are exactly the same - albeit with a bit of a shuffle-around. That's in spite of the fall from grace of THL affecting Sylvester's picks rather badly! Amazed the puss managed to hang onto 5th place...but what's really clear is that
1) soi6 has widened their first place lead - thanks to 4 picks being in the top 10 best performing stocks on the market: ATM (3rd), PLX (1st), SKO (7th), GTK (48th), VGL (4th)
2) the plethora of brokers in the top 10 have all but disappeared - Hobsons is still there in 6th place, but Craig's have gone right back to 19th.

Results to May 5th...soi6 maintaining a solid lead! The top 3 generally has a look of stability about it.,..the big impact last week impacted both Hobson Wealth Mgmt and GV1, with NZK's downgrades prompting them to crash out of the top 5...

...and the update has been a while coming! My apologies - May has been a busy month. I didn't follow the conventional wisdom and "stay away", and am regretting it now!
However - on the picks front, the results season has had an impact, especially for holders of PLX. Results below...the big changes are mikeybycrikey and sylvester cat dropping down slightly - although they are not far behind in 6th and 7th.

Ahhh good point Bull.
There is a formula, but i have not done it in this update. Plain forgot; i normally keep an eye out for rights issues.

Are there any others except IFT?

Will sort this out next update.

hi , dont recall all of them but maybe ift , tlt , moa , someone else might know of more.

I know about MOA. Hadn't caught TLT, thank you for that. Question for those who know - was ARG (March???) a straight capital raise or a rights issue?

If this is what you are referring to they had nothing to do with share holding or price.

Apologies for update delay, I am having to change data source (and the associated coding that goes with it). Will be up and running again soon.

Oliver Mander

Well, its been quite the mission to re-code the data source, but back on deck! Funnily enough, not much has changed...soi6 still leading us out, with MSL Capital coming in a strong second place! Yours truly is in 6th place overall, not far behind silverblizzard. Note that rights issues are now factored in here for IFT, MOA and TLT. Announced rights issues for ARV and THL are not yet included as their record date is in early July. Also, Veritas name change has been recorded in here also.

PLX, BLT and VGL remain the holy trinity, although I don't think anyone has picked all 3. At the other end of the scale, THL has let many of us down, in 110th place. But its SEA that takes out the last spot, with an impressive -66.7% return for the year so far.

There is a very clear first place in soi6, with mikeybycrikey swapping into the top 5 with sliverblizzard. The reality is that 2nd - 10th place are very close together, with YTD returns of over 50%, and there is then quite a drop back to 11th.

Results to July 5th...mikeyby crikey drops down to 7th this week, replaced by the silverblizzard. The results this week include the impact of rights issues for both ARV and THL, although THL continues to be an overall drag on performance YTD.

A few more changes at the top end this week...there are three clear groups emerging. First, all by themselves, is soi6 - with a $1.7k gap to the next group of 2 (LeftField, MSL Capital) and then another $500 back to the next group of 3 (mikeybycrikey, sylvester cat and Gumboot). PLX remains an 'underpinning' of strong performance in all of the top 10, with the recent recovery in ATM's price helping Left Field and sylvester cat this week.

Yachtie raises a good point in terms of MSL Capital being a strong performer in this years comp. Craigs Investment Partners also deserves a mention - in 17th place.
Lola, AFT definitely has had an impact also - but offset overall by the recovery in ATM. Nonetheless, AFT is now the 6th best performing share this year.

Hi all...top 5 results for w/e Jul 19th shown below.
Sylvester continues the quiet march into 3rd place this week, but the same solidity around the top 5 remains in place. soi6 looks completely unassailable in 1st, as per most of the year...

Shares that have underpinned success in the top 5 are well documented - but a special mention for MFT, which has flown under the radar while doubling its share price over the last year.

Afternoon everyone...top 5 results for w/e Jul 26th shown below, with a link to the full spreadsheet sitting on the website as per usual (https://sites.google.com/view/nzsharepicks).
The inexorable rise of a certain Puddy Tat continues, with a rise to second place (beating out MSL Capital to 5th). The actual gap between 1st and 2nd has closed a little also - although still stands at an impressive lead of $1400 for soi6. It was clear that the GTK downgrade had a marked impact on both soi6 and MSL.

This comp is a great learning opportunity and I’ve already made some changes to my actual portfolio as a result of what I see here...... interesting times ahead.

Too right Left Field!! I think soi6 is a long way in front, but definitely agree its all pretty close from there on down. I didn't mean to brag...sorry. The story of the week was really GTK, and how that negatively impacted 2 of the top 5. And yes, its always good learning. The good thing about the picks is how people balance 'stability' with some level of risk. A case of which risks payoff + how well "stable" stocks turn out to actually be stable! I have added SKO to my real portfolio this year, having been alerted to it by this comp. Good decision so far...

I don't see you bragging. Just calling it as it is.

Many posters concentrate on Div/yield stocks, however the 100% plus gains YTD of the leaders in your competition show there are other options for investors. Small cap companies on their path to profitability can provide great returns.

From watching so16's success's I've now added VGL to my personal portfolio which includes ATM, SKO, PLX, BLT and a few others. Thanks again for running this great competition.

Results for w/e August 2nd...and we have a change in the top 5!!! silverblizzard has stormed into second place, thanks to a solid week by BLT last week. mikeyby crikey has (for now) dropped to 6th. Of course, after the mayhem today and the sharp decline in PLX, suspect that will have a major impact on the top 15 next week! soi6 seems unassailable - the lead has actually EXTENDED again this week.

Results to August 9th shown below. Left Field and MSL Capital have decided to play swapsies, but no other change to the top 5 otherwise. This week, I have adjusted for the machinations of the PGW share scheme - which I think boils down to simply a 1:10 share consolidation. The dividend record date will appear next week (I think its the 14th). I've also adjusted the interim dividend for PGW to reflect the share consolidatiuon (ie, multiplied by 10). The huge changes in markets last week have had an impact - the leaders are down between $500 - $1000 this week compared to last. Interestingly, the average return for all participants has remained constant at $1,400 (14% YTD).

Hello all...results to August 16th attached below....and the top 5 has not changed, although MSL Capital has leapt into 3rd place, pushing sylvester and Left Field down 1 spot each. silverblizzard got within $600 of soi6 last week, but the leader has returned with a vengeance, extending to a $1,200 lead. The volatility in sharemarkets has had a big impact last week, particularly impacting the top half of the leaderboard; although perhaps its simply the fall in the PLX share price last week :-)!

Hi all...thought it might be time for a "mid year" review of the NZ50 and our little competition. Since 62.4% through 2019 is quite the normal metric to be reviewing.

Hi all...and miracle of miracles we have a change in the top 5! Yours truly has dropped out to 6th, with mikeybycrikey sliding into 5th! Suspect the main driver here have been changes to ATM (downward) and WDT (upward). VGL's revisions have had a significant impact on soi6, our leader, with the lead cut down to $700...Left Field is hot on their heels.

Last week must have been an anomaly. Normal service in the top 5 is restored this week, with sylvester and mikeybycrikey playing swapsies yet again. soi6 even managed to extend the lead over LeftField again...in fact, LeftField is in danger if losing 2nd place to MSL Capital (ye gods). As Left Field so confidently states, however...markets are volatile right now and anything could happen!

What an interesting week. The top 5 are still the top 5...not much changing there. But the margins are becoming tight...there's now only $300 difference between soi6 in first place and MSL Capital in second. Admittedly, the gap back to 3rd is another $400, so the overall spread of $900 (ie, 9%) between the top 5 continues. ATM was the big mover down this week, impacting everyone EXCEPT MSL Capital; hence their 'catchup' to get close to soi6.

What is worth noting is the slight change in shape of the 'top 5' shares for the year. VGL and AUG have dropped out of the top 5...replace by Meridian and Contact (MEL and CEN). That of course reflects the 'dividend story' in a world of low/negative interest rates and a flight to protect cash in a world of low growth. But it is indeed interesting, and a good reflection of the times we live in.

Hi Sylvester

Can you amend the results for PGW (I suggest adding $3.10 to the dividends received). As part of the consolidation of the 10 shares into one, shareholders received $3.10 for every 10 shares they held. So PGW is actually a positive investment. Starting price $5.10 becomes $2.00 after the $3.10 cash back. Current price of $2.43 plus dividends makes it positive rather than negative!

CB

No they didn't. Shareholders received either a 31cps 'special dividend'/ 'capital return' on a pre-consolidation basis , or $3.10 for each and every share they held post consolidation by way of a special dividend. I know, because I am a shareholder!

Will check out the PGW situation this evening. I did think I had it right, I have to say, but it was complicated and I might have missed something. I allowed for the dividend (I thought). My apologies for this....

Okay, so please accept my apologies. I missed the capital return :-(. What I have done is "normalised" the share price through the year, by multiplying all prices by 10. I have then added a $3.10 capital return (admittedly under 'rights' to avoid messing with my automated dividend stream!). In re-looking at this, I realised I also did not multiply the March dividend by 10, to account for the pre-consolidation dividend rate - I've corrected this also. This has obviously had an impact on all who picked PGW.

Oliver Mander
08-10-2019, 08:49 PM
And we have had a week of CHANGE!! The big news is that soi6 has lost top spot...it was a bad fortnight for SKO, PLX, GTK and VGL - 4 out of their 5 picks. That's also allowed Sylvester Cat to catch up within $100, with another $100 back to Awidara and another $100 to Left Field. Had it not been for applying the correct PGW share consolidation, that's where it would have stayed...but Dead Leaves have blown in from nowhere to be well ahead (by $400) in first place.

The relative stability of ATM, MFT and the increase in ARV helped Sylvester, while the rise in QEX helped Awidara. The major growth stocks prevalent at the top of the table have definitely been hit by changing sentiment recently...and it means a close competition heading into the end of the year!

Can someone please check that I have now treated PGW correctly. My apologies for missing the capital return...not sure how I managed that :-(.

Sylvester.

All PGW figures looks right. Individual performance charts are not but that is no biggie and does not matter for the competition.

Many thanks again for all your time and effort. Much appreciated.

Hi all....same leader this week, but the race is closer...and for the leaders at least, the decline from last week continues...probably a lot to do with the PLX. We do welcome MSL Capital back into the top 5.

Following cool bear's comments above, I've found and fixed the error that meant the individual results were different to the overall ones - that was caused by a slight date error that inexplicably occurred in September. All good now though...

Hi all...please accept my apology for delayed results this week. Note that RBC has been renamed ARB in this set of results, so this is reflected in those who picked Rubicon. One change to the top 5 this week - MSL Capital drops out, silverblizzard is back with a vengeance, mainly thanks to the week's stellar performance by BLT. soi6 continues to fall, helped by the poor performance of SKO. Next week will be very interesting, given news around THL and SKO this week. Dead leaves is consolidating in first place, although this was more due to everyone else's issues!

Note that it is coming up towards Christmas; while this shouldn't be a surprise, it catches me out every year :-)! I'm happy to run the comp again next year, as long as people are happy with that. Will call for submissions by December 31st. I am away in early January, however, so unlikely to publish much until I return.

Results to October 25th...and soi6 is making their comeback...mainly thanks to the response to SKO's placement announcement! Dead Leaves still leads, with a margin of only $200 back to soi6, while silverblizzard has dropped out of the top 5, thanks to a sharp decline in QEX and BLT (QEX decline also impacted Awidara).

Thanks for the update SC, must say I'm pleased to be back in the top 5.

Historically October has been a tough month for investors and in my case this year October saw my actual portfolio's total unrealised gains reduced by around 30% from Sept levels! Ouch!

Still overall very much in the green so thankful. Onwards and upwards.

Ouch. I don't feel so bad now - my actual NZ portfolio in October is up a mere 2.3%...but I guess context is everything! Ah well, no doubt I will have a difficult November...

Well well well...its been quite the "tightener" in the picks this week. SKO's ongoing climb has seen soi6 grab back the top spot - but only $200 ahead of 2nd and 3rd. IKE helped Left Field overtake Dead Leaves into 2nd spot...but its pretty close. These top 3 have opened up a big lead on 4th - 7th place, who are separated by only $58!! A drop of a $1 in MFT shares did not help Sylvester, while MSL Capital saw a 5% rise in GXH that helped them regain 5th.

The rise of PLX helped everyone who picked it, so while its spectacular, its not an arbiter of who gets the lead! Full results available now at the usual link: https://sites.google.com/view/nzsharepicks.

...and the congestion has disappeared in the results to 8/11! Sylvester cat was the big loser this week, dropping to 8th...as ATM led them down compared with Awidara and SilverBlizzard (neither of whom have picked ATM). Other than that, not much has changed....! SKO helped left field extend their lead over Dead Leaves, and soi6 managed to hold on to top spot (ATM down, but SKO up).

For the week ended Nov 15th; Absolutely NO change in the rankings this week in the top 5 - although the gaps have closed up markedly, with only $600 separating 1st - 5th. The real action has happened after the 15th, with reporting for ARV, ATM and SKO (plus MET announcements) all likely to have an impact on the top 5...

Results for the week ended Nov 22nd...and if last week was "No Change", this week is completely different...the highlights are:
- Left Field has beaten out soi6 into top spot! While they both benefited from ATM outlook forecasts, the decline GTK midweek really hurt soi6, while the rise in WDT helped Left Field.
- That double whammy also explains why the winning margin has increased to $400
- your friendly purry puss has roared into 3rd spot - ATM helped me overcome Awidara and silverbliazzard, with the steep rise in ARV adding some cream!
- we welcome 'sportster' into 5th place! Nothing vastly special about their picks this week (sorry), in fact its all very tight 5th-9th with a gap of only about $150.

Results as at 29/11 shown below! Left Field continues to extend their lead, with IKE, SKO and ATM all performing strongly this week. That probably represents the highlight...Sylvester and Awidara continue to swap places, so its all a bit tight as we head into the last 4 weeks of 2019. I will get some details out shortly as to the workings of the 2020 competition (if people are still ok with me doing it). This weeks results include the impact of the PEB rights issue, which gives a slight boost to the 13 lucky people who picked it :-)!

Quote from SC earlier post.

"I will get some details out shortly as to the workings of the 2020 competition (if people are still ok with me doing it)."

IMHO I think you have done a great job

One minor matter to consider for 2020

One that only affected a very few of us in 2019 and had little impact on the overall result

Orion Health OHE was taken over and de-listed from the NZX in March 2019 when it was up 5% YTD.

It left us with four horse field running for the rest of the year ...

If it had been a stock like Oceania OCA (40% of 2019 entries picked OCA) then a much greater effect.

In 2020 would the ability to choose a replacement stock in the event of delisting be worthwhile.

Any ideas?

Oliver Mander

Well, the only thing that changed on the week to 6/12 was that everyone's returns went down...:-)! The top 5 order is still the same...so not a lot of commentary this week. ATM, IKE, PLX, WDT, GTK, THL, TLS...all down. The only ones amongst the leaders to buck the trend were SKO and TLT. All this was good news for Dead Leaves who 'narrowed the gap' somewhat in 5th place.

SilverBlizzard has stormed back into 3rd place this week, at the expense of Dead Leaves, with Awidara dropping to 5th. Left Field increased their lead over soi6, thanks to a strong performance by WDT. sylvester maintained a strong position, thanks to ARV and MFT. ATM helped a lot of people also. But it was the spectacular rise in BLT that was the key differentiator this week, allowing silverblizzard to leapfrog into 3rd.

Results out to Dec 24th - I've waited for this date to make it a clean week heading to the 31st! Bit rushed to do any proper analysis today, but there are TWO newbies in the top5 - welcome to baldie and dinky! Sylvester is firmly in 3rd, thanks to ARV, and has narrowed the gap markedly to top spot. I realise this is a game with a defined timeline (piclking up on Snoopy's comments in one of the other threads) - but like many, there is a long-term investment strategy that influences my picks - and all of us probably take some good insight from each other in the oicks game that influence our longer-term decisions. Game or not - I hope it adds value. Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year to all!!!

Please remember to enter the 2020 game - and get the link out to as many people as possible! The more the merrier :-)!

2019 RESULTS!!!

Well, it was a tumultous last week, but that shows just how tight the competition actually was. Our congratulations to SILVERBLIZZARD888 who took the crown thanks to a whopping end to the year by BLT. Their picks totaled a gargantuan 74.7% return - I hope their's some actual cash behind that! That dropped SylvesterCat one spot to 4th, with Leftfield ending in 3rd spot. Baldie ended in 2nd spot, again, due to BLT. And in 5th spot cam "sportster" with a still-creditable return of 57.7%!

Wow! I'm so glad to have managed to have won the competition this year and added to a somewhat confirmation bias that I have an ability to pick stocks that 'eventually' have high returns. Its especially honoring who comparing with the quality of participants and depth of experience among the ranks. Of course an element of luck and timing has a crucial play! (Especially BLT right at the end!) I would also like to congratulate Baldie, Left Field, Sylvester Cat and Sportster for their amazing performances too and everyone else for their passion in stocks, you're all a rare breed so please keep your passion for stocks and never let it die!

Thank you Sylvester Cat for running the competition, your efforts are always appreciated and I look forward to this years competition with open arms. Your enthusiasm to run this competition and the well place ranking suggests you are among the highly passionate investors and I wish you well in this years competition and in your actual portfolio.

Good luck and hope you all have amazing returns this year!

As contribution to this competition I was thinking of donating a trophy for this competition that passes on from one winner to the other. Maybe a shield, cup or a plaque to engrave the winners username and performance on there. That way it sparks more competition among everyone to want to win it even more and builds on the strong history of this competition. If there are no objections then I'd be happy to get one made before the end of the 2020 competition and will pass it on from there. Let me know if there are suggestions.

My thinking around it in terms of writing would be:

Sharetrader's Top New Zealand Stock Picker Award:

2018 - VR - 35.20 %
2019 - Silverblizzard888 - 74.7%

If anyone can provide previous years winners and possibly even performances I can add that on too.
