Brian Gaynor speculating yesterday that Adrian Orrs proposal to require NZ banks to raise tier 1capital requirements fron 8.1% to 16% would require our four largest banks to raise an estimated 15billion in capital. This could be achieved by a partial or full IPO.He indicated one Australian owned bank is "seriously looking at the option".
Will this be a panacea for the flat NZX, and how attractive are banks for retail investors??

Good FT article regarding UK banks and investors etc...

Why do investors like bank shares so much?Even in their darkest days, UK bank shares were among the most actively traded among Britain’s private investors, and continue to appear in stockbrokers’ top ten buy and sell lists. Investors like the fact that banks, like retailers, can be physically seen — you can walk into a branch and see the bank operating.Their popularity predates the financial crisis. It wasn’t that long ago that banks were considered safe and secure investments, seemingly making record profits each year, and featuring heavily in many investment portfolios. They were also big dividend payers. Ten years ago, banks provided almost a quarter of all dividends in the UK market. Following the financial crisis their share prices plummeted and many suspended these payments. Since then, UK banks have been rebuilding their balance sheets and are now returning to favour among some investors.
