It is normal procedure that a party leader and prime minister should be immediately informed by their MPs of any integrity stories about to be published by the media. Instead, Hipkins says he wasn’t informed until Monday – although the blame also lies in part with Hipkins own staff who learnt about it on Friday."

We all remember how bovver boy Mallard was allowed to hang on to the speakers role despite all sorts of shenanighans. Hipkins will let Wood hang in there, and who else is there? There are simply not credible and competent people within the Labour ranks who can fill ministerial roles, this is obvious.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins is speaking from Lower Hutt on Thursday afternoon, after the resignation of Cabinet minister Michael Wood. This is being livestreamed at the top of this story.

It is just the latest “distraction” for a Labour Party desperately trying to keep focus on the issues that matter.




Hipkins has now lost three ministers since taking the reins in January. Meka Whaitiri’s quiet defection to Te Pāti Māori dominated the headlines in May, and the saga that had Stuart Nash sacked in March was finally put to rest last week with the release of a Cabinet Office report.



And Hipkins started the week answering questions about the latest Government appointee to cause a headache, Meng Foon, who seemingly resigned as race relations commissioner for a conflict of interest debacle of his own.
