Just trialling this MQ platform with broker Alpari UK.

Seems great for day trading.

I made a couple of entry errors on my first 2 orders, as there are some differences between this and Oandas platform. The $1.63 was a quantity error, should have been 2. - not .02 , so profit would have been $163 , and the $577 loss was a quantity and stop loss error.

After that I got into the hang of things.

Profit $1210 so far on a few trades

Anyone else using this platform?

The order ticket is quite interesting - you can see prices moving tick by tick, and amazingly there are BFs and Garts to be found.....quite a nice aid to entry when day trading/scalping.

Another major plus IMO is the trailing stop......thats what we need to see on the big 'O'

I like the fact that ther platform loads in a few seconds, and seems to be very stable. MQ is also available with a multitude of brokers.

Fridays profit ended at USD1282.80, so it was a great day trading, and good to get to grips with the new platform, but too stressful scalping/day trading.

Back to the calmer trading of BFs and Garts.

Gripes.
Its not possible to pull the stop or target lines like you can with the big 'O'. Thats a nuisance when things are moving fast and you want to grab some extra pips, plus I got a re-quote on my last trade........never had that with Oanda. Another sell stop order got refused because I was too close to the action. So I had to quickly sell @ 'instant execution', losing 4 pips from my original required entry.

Anyway, overall Im still finding it a great platform for scalping ..........heres the current account picture.

The 2 blank spaces are long (straddle) trades that didnt get hit.

13 positive trades in a row....hope thats not an omen ;)

Must remember this....

and leave the computer on.....

Attention: Trailing Stop works in the client terminal, not in the server (like Stop Loss or Take Profit). This is why it will not work, unlike the above orders, if the terminal is off. In this case, only the Stop Loss level will trigger that has been set by trailing stop.

Thats pretty weird.
Something like MS Outlook can have clientside rules but never seen it on a trading platform.
GFT's trailing stop certainly didnt work like that.

I will get around to checking out that platform sometime

BEWARE

I wondered why the swap rate on 3. short contracts this morning was -$159.32.

Just found out why................

When you roll an open position from Wednesday to Thursday, then Monday next week becomes the value date, not Saturday; therefore the rollover charge on a Wednesday evening will be three times the value indicated.

http://www.alpari-idc.com/en/services/rollover-policy.html

The major problem was I was doing scalping trades and although I had earned circa $150 on my first try, I was still losing.........so I left the position open, and now its even worse......but hey you never know....

The answer for Alpari scalpers is to obviously only trade on Monday and Tuesday....or use Oanda for Wed-Friday.

peat
22-11-2007, 01:45 PM
Market Maker (CMC)and Dealbook (GFT) always threw me a bit with their value dates etc... I quite like the way Oanda doesnt have that concept

arco
22-11-2007, 05:14 PM
Hi Peat

The 14 minute window to avoid.................

Alpari (UK) is dealt on a "Spot" basis only. This means that all trades settle two business days from inception, as per market convention. Alpari (UK) does not arrange physical delivery of currencies hence, all positions left open from 10:59:45 p.m. to 10:59:59 p.m. (London time) will be rolled over to a new value date. As a result, positions are subject to a swap charge or credit

peat
22-11-2007, 05:58 PM
whereas Oanda charge by the second. surely a purer way of doing it.

arco
22-11-2007, 07:15 PM
That Alpari swap rate palava caused me no end of bother today.......I was about to take a nice scalp profit when I noticed that with -$159.32 swap rate it was actually result in a loss......so I did a Niederhuffer and went shopping with mrs arco, leaving the position to sort itself out............yeah right!!!!!

.........anyway, 7 positive trades later I eventually brought
the account back from a disasterous US$1683 loss to green again..... US$3035 :)

Another major diffence I discovered when I wanted
to scale out of a position. Taking a trade in the opposite
direction just opened a new order and I was then both long
and short at the same time. This could be beneficial on a
ranging market, but it caused me more hassles at the time
as it was not my intention.

At Oanda you can scale out of your trade as
the price (hopefully) goes in your direction - nibbling off
amounts by trading in the opposite direction. This just
reduces your original order. However, you can't be both
long and short at the same time.

So, with Metatrader its all or nothing, - if you want to scale
out of trades you need to place multiple orders at the onset
and close them one by one.

Two short term positions were entered overnight...Aud.Jpy and Gbp.Jpy
However as today seems a bit quite currently due to US Thanksgiving, I've
closed the positions off for now with that and the swap charges in mind.

weeny scalp tonight riding the wild fluctuations of the
Eur.Jpy......

A nice end to the week.................

Very pleased with the MT platform overall, - its very easy to
operate once you get to know the way it performs.

I capped the week off with a short term foray in the Looney
overnight which I closed off with a nice profit before the end of trading.
(No swap costs that way).

Scalping trades total for this week US$9755.95

30 trades............... 27 winners, 1 break even, 2 losers.

Next week I have promised myself less scalping.......its too stressful,
with too much time staring at the screen.

Hi Arco and thanks for inviting me here.

This is my first post. Just today I've received this link about MT4 and Metaquotes company. Quite disturbing, but I think we all know about dirty tricks in forex.

Check it out:

Hello George

Thanks for that link/info........certainly disturbing.

IMO MT is a good charting package for developing
strategies using the many additional indicators that
are widely available.

My suggestion would be that if you have a
strategy that works with MT, use a demo
account for spotting the trade, but place
all orders with a non-MT broker.

Look forward to your further participation on ST

Some further info..............

We are in the the final stages of experimenting with additional strategies on the Alpari demo MT platform which cannot be traded using Oanda.

Some strategies appear to work very well on the demo, and we will shortly open a small trial live account with Alpari UK as an addition to our Oanda live account. There has only been one serious glitch on the platform so far.

This was when I opened a short trade directly off the Eur.Jpy chart and it somehow placed a position in Eur.Aud. Not sure why/how that could happen, but I managed to get a quick profit and exited within 5 minutes.

Occasionally there seems to be a hesitation before the trade is placed/closed (perhaps 5-10 seconds), but slippage does not seem an issue in these cases.

Previously I mentioned the inability to scale out of trades, but we discovered later that this is possible by amending the lots on the close trade ticket.

The plug in issue has been mentioned at the Alpari forum.......

http://forum.alpari.co.uk/showthread.php?p=3879

I plan to visit their offices when I am in London - June 08

Thanks Arco,

Regarding MT4 - I use it for 2 years now and know it quite well, so if you or anyone have any questions, you're all welcome to ask me.

I like MT4, use it for charts and analysis, and trade through Oanda.
Considering that big brokers like FXCM are trying to switch to MT4, the demand must be overwhelming. Maybe one day most of the market makers will offer MT4.
So far to me it's the best free charting platform.

Best!

That is very cool link, thanks Arco.

We can also use Help Topics in MT$ platform.

Additional cool functions I often use:

1. To copy trendline or any object (channel, triangle, etc), double-click on it, press Ctrl key, and pull the line using mouse. This creates a copy of the object. I've found it very helpful especially in creating parallel channels (I use it for "Bump and Run" reversal pattern).

2. Some brokers seem to display only some markets, but have more data saved to open charts (even if they don't offer these to trade).
To see all symbols, go to
Market Watch, right click on "Symbol", choose "Show All"
If you download North Finance MT4 - you'll have access to some futures charts, i.e.: Soybeans, Corn, Wheat, Natural Gas, Crude Oil, SP500 mini, DJ mini, Nasdaq, as well as spot Gold, Silver, and indexes (SP, DJ, NDQ).

3. Good site for indicators (huge collection):
http://www.forexmt4.com/mt_yahoo/

How to use it?
a. Copy the code from the site
b. Open your Meta Editor
c. Click on New Indicator, choose "Indicator" not Expert Advisor
d. Write the name of your indicator
e. click "next" until "finished"
Meta Editor will now open a file
f. delete contents of that file
g. pass the code saved from yahoo site
h. press "compile"
i. go back to your platform, the indicator will appear under "Custom Indicators"

If you need any indicators for MT4 let me know post or pm). I have quite a collection, although I don't use 99.9% of them :D

Yes those futures are very very cheap.

About 1/10 the cost of CMC's ones...I dare say cheap enough to day trade.

Go Markets – Changes to FX & Update on EAs

Dear Client,

In the coming days and weeks you will see changes with FX coming through the MetaTrader4 platform. The biggest change will be in the price feed. As you are aware we offer fixed pricing which does not fluctuate throughout the day. Whilst this can give transparency in the pricing it can mean clients do not always get the best prices on offer.

We are in the final stages of implementing a new ECN-style price feed coming through from a combination of 70 banks. This will mean that clients get the absolute best bid/ask prices coming from the interbank market. During liquid times spreads can get as low as 1-pip on major pairs, and if spreads widen it can be a signal to a client that the conditions for trading are not favourable. As an indication of spreads, many majors including GBPUSD, EURUSD, EURGBP and AUDUSD can offer spreads as low as 1-2 pips, even during the Asian session.

Offering the accurate interbank market prices means it is easier for us to hedge our positions. As part of this we will be able to accept ALL EXPERT ADVISORS including FAPTurbo. We will send an email to all clients as soon as this is fully implemented.
