CLQ - "CLEANTEQ"

http://www.cleanteq.com/

Have found this wee gem of late, & thought i'd share it with the masses.

Listed back in November 2007 @ 50c

Shares on issue: 56,504,258

Market Cap @ 47.5c (current SP) = $26, 839,522

Management/Board own a large chunk of shares (> 50%!)

Cleanteq has 4 business units (incl exposure to the resource sector)

1. Air Purification

Clean TeQ's range of Air Pollution and Odour Control Systems provide clean air using technologies that have minimum impact on our precious environment while being safe, cost effective and simple to operate

2. Water Purification

Clean TeQ's range of Filtration, Membrane Bioreactors, UV Disinfection and Clean-iX™ Ion Exchange Systems provide clean water using technologies that have minimum impact on our precious environment while being, safe, cost effective and simple to operate.

3. Resource Recovery

Clean TeQ's range of Ion-Exchange Resins and the Clean-iX® cLX (continuous liquid extraction) and cRIP (continuous resin-in-pulp) Technologies are being utilised for many diverse and exciting processes. Shouldn't you consider a technology that has the potential to make something from nothing!

4. Resins

Clean TeQ's range of Ion-Exchange Resins and Clean-iX® Ion-Exchange Technologies are leading the world in revolutionising the mineral and water processing industries. With the world having such a dependence on the mining industry, shouldn't you ensure that your extraction and processing technologies

(Interesting fact on there website, a TV requires 35 minerals, a telephone 40 minerals, & just 15 minerals to make a car!)

I like the potential of there specific technologies, especially as they are already in demand & profitable.

I expect further upside from securing further contracts during 2008.

HY2008 Results were announced on the 13/2/08:

It's held up ok thus far though, despite the market conditions (listed at 50c, currently 47.5c, only down 5%)

CLQ is NOT some "blue sky hopeful" mining spec with no revenue.

It has cash/no debt

It's already profitable & cashflow positive

FY08 Revenue under contract, as per ABN Amro research report.

90% of the forecast $6.5m Air Purification revenue
100% of the forecast $6.8m Resource Recovery revenue (incl BHP-Nickel)
90% of the forecast $1.6m Water Purification revenue

The Resource Recovery revenue contract is with BHP Billiton working on there Nickel extraction pilot plant & license fees - this amount is likely to be exceeded.

They are also able to pass on any increase in costs, seen by the fact they have either improved or maintained margins.

If the SP was to drop i'd be even more keen on it, given it's already on a FY09 forecast P/E of just over 6.

CLQ up to 49c, albeit on tiny volume

Not much of offer on the sell side either.

Stocks that make profits & generate cashflow do better than those who don't in bear markets.

As the markets creep towards a bear market, i'll be selling specs & heading towards such stocks as CLQ.

Still yet to buy in, & don't want to buy them over 50c ;)

Since Mick mentioned CLQ on another thread, have gone back and dug out some comments I gave another person who asked an opinion back in March when I reviewed the half year result and prospectus:

While I quite like them, I think they are quite early stage. Three divisions - air is solid, they have some advantages etc and obviously been operating a while - can't find figures on growth in sector, but looking at overall numbers, suspect it is steady 20%ish but off low base. Water technology is small beer and not especially radical - just a variety of offerings. Resource recovery looks exciting, but tech report says it is under development/not yet commercial.

Looking at HY segmentals, it looks like perhaps they have had some big payments from BHP/CRVD to have a go at making the technology commercial? So it is reasonably exciting, but still tentative and looks to me like they may have had some large sums as payment that are unlikely to be repeated until the process is proven. I think the 2009 fin year could potentially have very little in payments on resource recovery, while BHP toys with their pilot plant and other potential customers watch to see what happens etc. Given that was close to $1m of profits first half, it is significant.

Maybe I am wrong, but it just seems incredibly unlikely that a small company of 26 people is going to win the resource industry over with a new technology for extraction which requires significant investment in under 4-5 years.

However, if they can get either the water or resource side commercial, the resin replacement business would be nice. Of course, then they will have to build the resin plant, so that is another round of investment capital to get the returns on that part of the business.

Since then, they've turned in another good quarterly result and an agreement with Paladin, so that makes me a little more optimistic that they may have a sustainable growth business model that isn't going to require regular injections of new capital - the usual pitfall for interesting technologies.

There are some interesting technology companies out there, but with tightening credit conditions, I'd be cautious of anything requiring more investment $'s for a while.

But a bit of a stretch to describe it as an " Alternative Energy" company?

Hi Shasta,

I am still cautious on CLQ, although I appreciate that they have made a good effort to date and turned in a good performance in current year. Check the segmentals - you will have to check FY against HY, as they have decided not to report last years in this recent report (despite giving a segmental for the previous HY in the HY report).

Air - the mainstay - is down in second half. Water is up, but still relatively small. Resources is about the same as first half BUT, the margins on this appear quite high for a developing technology - and form the bulk of profits. This doesn't quite make sense for a technology which is still in development. I am still suspicious that some of the resource amounts are likely to be one-off licensing or milestone payments from BHP.

Also, take a look at AEC which acquired what sounds like (at least superficially) a related type of resins business in August last year and, after attempting to develop it further, has sold it off again due to lack of profitability.

Finally, carefully read the wording of the CLQ full year announcement. Note the references to "increased employment costs", investment to facilitate further growth and "position to leverage potential opportunities". Note the mention of services fees offsetting a decrease in licensing revenue in the resources business. Note that there is NO outlook statement suggesting an expectation of growth in NPAT in the coming year. Maybe I am trying to read too much into this, but I think you are likely to see costs increase faster than revenue in the coming year. This may be a long term successful business, but it will probably be a bumpy road.

I think your on the right track Liz.

CLQ have been at pains to highlight in the past the fact a big chunk of it's FY08 Revenue had already been "contracted" from FY07.

The fact they won't segment the results further, or provide a looking forward statement suggests they haven't "locked in" long term contracts & that revenues could be a bit lumpy.

It's not a company for a falling market, so i'm staying away for now.

I dug CLQ out for another look today after the announcement of a new technology in resin extraction for uranium was announced and the price shot up...

... it's still an interesting company technically, but the recent accounts make sorry reading. There seems little point in buying while they're still in need of a death-spiral convertible note facility. Unless there is a miraculous bunch of contracts that require minimal working capital in hand (and it IS a bumpy sort of business), then they need to convince shareholders to take something like a 1:1 cap raising, or hope for a takeover. The small burst of PR today might suggest they're toying with the former. Or maybe just attempting to rally the price enough that they can obtain a more useful amount of capital on their next convertible note draw-down...

Lizard

Eight months on, CLQ are back at around the same price they hit when I posted in March (5 - 5.3cps).

Looks like they may have turned the corner though. As suggested, they managed to raise enough capital to recently extract themselves from the death-grip of La Jolla Cove, leaving them debt-free. And while last year was rather pitiful on the revenue front, the recent reports of contract awards for air and water treatment suggest there should be a strong recovery in 2012. The company is forecasting a return to profit and this appears possible, although it is difficult to be sure what margin pressure they are facing in the air contracts side.

On the positive side, they may be able to make coin from the increased demand in services as businesses seek to reduce carbon emissions. And although PEH might be slightly cheaper entry to this sector for similar turnover, CLQ has the benefit of a bit more liquidity. Chart starting to look positive, although there isn't a lot of depth on the bid side, so care needed and remains very much a punt at this stage. All going well, price target of 8-10cps looks possible for next 6 - 9 months, but may require patience.

Sorry, Drillfix... did not mean to catch you out... thought most traders here know better than to follow me into illiquid minnows by now... really, I should probably know better than to follow my collectors lust by now!

I just put $1500 of div cheques from some of my other micro-caps into paying for some at 5cps after my post. I know it's too soon... but I still find it easier to follow things I actually own...

Sentiment-wise, other than contract announcements, we get the agm next Thursday as a possible rev-up, but more likely would be first quarter cashflow at end of January and first-half result end of Feb before it is clear if there is value here. Meanwhile, it is quite possible that La Jolla still have a few shares to quit - they're hardly likely to be in for the long haul and received about 20m or so earlier in the year - so that alone could cap it. Plus the recent entitlement was 2 for 7 at 3.7cps - which might be enough for some to be selling out again at 5cps and above.

Overall, will not surprise me if it takes them a whiie to get going... if the story gets better over the next 3 or 4 months, I'll possibly buy some more, but if not, I'll put them back again (probably at a bigger % loss than you).

Anyway, next time you get tempted by my picks, please remind yourself that we are seriously incompatible. :)

Nahh your alright Liz, my fault totally for being compulsive and then realising that usually the illiquid and that my patience or position status in the market was not compatible...lol

A small loss is better than continually being exposed in the market, and usually with any stock that I find myself on the wrong side of the trade, I normally just abandon anyway so there is nothing wrong with being wrong, providing that we know that we are wrong.

Had the case been whereby I had quite a bit of cash at my disposal then I normally would just enter and hold to ride out the duration as I still believe the upward move will come.

Good luck with this Liz and I will keep an eye on this to see how things pan out :)

Been picking up off the lows in the past few days (though doesn't mean so much in this market) and back to 4.3cps. But quarterly out today suggests they are on track. Still a few months to accumulate before they start to edge into profitable territory. However, an announcement on a desalination project as foreshadowed could kick-start some interest.

Closed yesterday at 5.5cps, but with one bid at 5.7cps. May open stronger today, so will probably stay clear till it settles, but then interested in picking up a few more to get a more worthwhile holding.

Reg_Halt session status (new from 28 Nov 11), which, as I understand it, applies when a share is about to move into the Extreme Cancellation Range...for a share under 10cps, this is a move of >2.1cps.

As I understand it, a Regulatory Halt then puts it back into pre-open for at least 3 minutes and re-sets the ECR price.

Have managed to burn through most of the cash again now. Receipts on the increase, but costs also and managed through the issue of convertible notes which may well hold them back.

Price driven down on the back of the spp which initially triggered a downward price spiral by offering shares at a 20% discount to 5 day VWAP immediately prior to issue. This was halted by setting a 7.4cps minimum and then extending the offer a couple of times... seems that someone has gone to some trouble to push the close up on low volume over past 5 days to try and encourage greater participation.

Recent acquisition of a copper play where they can employ their own technology may be a positive strategy, but will further increase capital requirements, so it is difficult to get enthused at this stage.

Still got a few of these. Have managed to get a scandium recovery pilot plant agreement away and a couple of odour recovery contracts in recent days. Looks like there was an article in Australian Small Cap Investor?? Price has "run" up to 5.7cps (from 4.6cps yesterday) and now in trading halt pending clarification.

The outstanding convertibles on these need considering, but there is probably a long term story here which is worth a long term trade on when technicals add up. Worth putting on the radar again.

Thanks to Joshuatree for directing me to this article which may be the one referred to in the trading halt.

My average entry price sadly back at 8.7cps, so will need a bit more of a run if I'm going to get back in the money!

Not really sure what's driving it, but now 8.5cps... one of my better charting moments! Think I'm now in the money after final purchase. :)

Closed at 11cps today - market cap of $33m... happy to be going against the flow, but that seems a lot of hype relative to substance.

Has pushed on up, driven by the vision of a latent scandium market, awaiting a feasible means of supply.

There's a lot of hurdles to jump on this one, although the odds look better-than-even of getting there - and will be much improved if a bit of market enthusiasm can offer up a supply of cash when it is needed. Now 14cps. Leaving it to the charts at this point, but may consider a bit of profit taking soon, given the half-yearly numbers aren't likely to add anything.

Felt a bit pumpy today. Sold a third at 18.5cps to lock in some gains on that run up from October.

Nice technology, big backers - but I have to use too much imagination trying to figure out future cashflows and possible dilution to feel entirely comfortable at this point.

NPV announcement for Scandium scoping study... looks impressive on "reasonable" figures for now. 53% IRR and $A279m NPV - although maybe a 20 year life and an 8% discount rate (post tax) is a little generous.

Current price, 28.5cps for market cap of $105m, so market likes it. Looks like I reduced too soon. Still, can't complain about the gains on the remainder in recent weeks.
