NZX Share Investing Comp - 2010 FINAL RESULT!

Having missed the traditional ShareTrader competition in 2009, I thought I would volunteer to run one for 2010. Since this is a pretty busy period over Christmas, I am going to make the cut-off for entries midnight, Sunday 20th December.

Unlike prior years, entry prices will be at the first-traded price from the day following you posting your selection, so you can start entering at any time. End prices will be as determined as last traded price on Friday 17th December 2010.

Otherwise, rules are:
*Pick 5 shares with listing on the NZX and each will be given equal weighting
*No picks with market cap below $10m will be accepted
*Cash can be selected and will be entered at the National Bank, 1yr term deposit rate (non-compounded, qtrly interest).
*Dividends and rights issues will be accounted for but not spp's.

I thought about the takeover idea - have considered making it possible to re-buy in on a quarterly basis. However, at this stage, it looks like it could be pushing the limits of my data management to allow this option, so answer is no.

Definitely no allowance for going short.

Yes, bit of a blunt tool there to remove the lotto tickets from the equation. I tend to agree that there should be an opportunity in finance companies in the next year or two - got to benefit from the more conservative standards being imposed on the banking sector and the consolidation within the finance sector.

But for now, can't break the comp rules for DPC - I will leave your other picks in at the original entry prices and GPG will go in at Monday's opening price.

I have adjusted AIA for the 1:16 retail offer by presuming that 1:16th of shares were sold on open after the record date at $1.94 and repurchased at offer price, $1.65. Please let me know if there were any other adjustments or ex-dividends that occurred in Feb.

Interestingly, HGD and OGC seemed to have performed at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Not 'my' pick, but SCT has just gone ex a 1:10 free bonus issue as well as going ex-dividend on the increased share capital on 26th March. I know because I hold the shares in real life, if not in the competition.

The update for April sees a few more dramatic moves, with a big switch around in the top ten placings. Upside-umop gained a spectacular increase of over 20% for the month, on the back of strong performances from CVT, SKL and CUE. This saw him move from 11th to 1st place.

DIL has so far turned out to be the "black horse" of the race, having gained 140%+ since the beginning of the competition and pushing Stone Small Green and Xerof into the top 4. Comvita (CVT) has been the other spectacular at 77%, helping along our other two top-four placings (u-u and zito). At the other end, wk6332 took seriously his pledge to end up in the top 5 by starting a run up from 65th to 54th. BRICKS deserves special mention for having no shares in negative territory.

Overall a good month, with the ST average finally in positive territory at 3.5%, although the sharetrader "top 5 picks" is still at a dismal 7.5% loss.

Congrats to U-U for protecting the downside with a bit of a pick-up on WDT, thereby shrugging off only a few percent and holding clear in the lead. Another of his picks, CVT, was also one of the few stocks not to give up ground. Hope you can make it to the Wgtn meet, U-U, as we'll be expecting a run-down on your stock-picking technique :).

Glendoonie may be pleased to see that his pace is picking up, with a climb to 50th, although I am dubious that GPG has had anything to do with the lift.

Cheers Liz. Had a feeling I'd be knocked down a bit.

MVN's result was out today. Not too bad, maintaining its almost 7% yield with a little more diversification into the hotel sector to boot (previously announced however).

Did you take the right price for CUE? Im being honest here...its fallen a fair bit (very illiquid on NZX) and is now 31 cents. Thought it may have had a bigger impact on results.

I'm startled by OGC. No disrespect OGC holders, but I think its becoming a bit of a bubble - or perhaps I'm just not reading it right! Whether it pops before year end is another story...its one of those types of stocks that could double again without much reason to it!

Really sorry to hear you won't be at the Wgtn meet! :(

I used 32cps for CUE, as despite last sale being at 31cps, the next bid is 32cps (so the assumption is that you could have sold them at that if you'd wanted to). Same applies to WDT which last traded at 9.3cps, but has a bid at 9.5cps (according to Direct Broking).

Would seem likely OGC will at least consolidate for a month or two and give the rest of us a chance... just as DIL and CVT did this month, but nothing's certain with shares. Still, it's good to see the NZX producing a few 100%+ gains. :)

Okay, here are the nervously awaited results for June.

After entering the data, I feel anyone who held just one stock that went up should probably be patting themselves on the back! Yet, while the ST average dropped by 4.8% and the ST Top 5 picks fell another 3.1%, our leader (stone small green) only gave up a mere 1.9%... Zito also deserves some recognition as being the only poster I noted who managed to achieve a positive return this month - even if it was a tiny 0.1%... if there was someone else I missed, let us know!

Cheers Liz. Great effort. I didn't think it had gone that well seeing MVN, CVT and WDT dropping a bit since the last one. Diversification won at the end of the day, with CUE and SKL picking up the losses and then some.

In my mind CVT hit its peak a while back. Don't think we'll see that again this year? I like honey though, and have been buying lots of Manuka honey of late! (Not CVT's though!!)
CUE has a wee way to go with some excitement later on.
SKL is riding off the back on bullish comments by management and chairman, and once they resume divi's - bang! One systemic risk is the dairy industry. I believe they have diversified away from that a little bit, but we'll see.
MVN is offering around an 11% gross yield and management appear to have every intention of keeping the same divi or more in the future.. I might pick some of these up soon.
WDT. A little speculative but are gaining more and more respect. One of the first stocks I invested in and sold out pretty quickly too (the days of 50-60 cents). But it may finally be having its time....the only problem I see, is its not profitable in its current form. I believe they will get customers hooked on their motors and ramp up their selling price substantially. 6 month payoff is too low. 12 month payoff is too low.....this company could be seriously profitable. Revenue will soon be above market cap. Take over somewhere? Lets hope not.

Other NZ stocks to watch for me, are PPP (cashed up and director buying...watch for the down days and exchange rate differentials to PPP.ax) and PGW.

PS. I dont want to brag, but who noticed that perfect diversification hedge over thursday to friday? Haha. My % didn't change a bit...but 3 of my stocks did! :o

Edit: Looks like it was a one-off transcription error in the results table. Does not affect placings or other entrants. I have corrected and will read correctly from now on! Oh, and as at yesterday's close, you are running 4th, so well done - and credit it almost entirely on OGC!

Belg, this has been my 'secret' to working the market over many years. For this year RBD has been driving my success (+60%) with TUA up too, balanced against PGW going down and TEL and SKC marking time. I never worry about companies 'marking time' as long as they pay good dividends. The key is to include in your portfolio 'the big winner'. I think everything in my portfolio is potentially a 'big winner', but I don't know the timing of the eventual big move upward. However by staying in the market, I can guarantee I will be surfing the big wave of my rogue share, whenever it happens.

Yes great job on getting the update out so quickly Lizard. Sterling effort on your part. We're nearing the finish line and there is still a large handful of people who could take this year's competition title.

It's been a nice lift in CHA over the past fortnight, and it's one of two shares from my picks that I actually own. I'm surprised that the SPY price hasn't moved much given the positive news that their management seems to be putting out.

Below is another mid-month update, although there have been very few changes to position at this stage. Nigel may have made the biggest move up since last. OGC remains the top performing share YTD, followed closely by SKL and DIL.

Also a reminder that this competition finishes 17th Dec at last-traded price. I will open a thread for 2011 comp shortly after the November results are out, so the more competitive out there might want to start thinking about their picks now. Rules will be as per 2010 - see the first post on this thread (http://www.sharetrader.co.nz/showthread.php?7404-NZX-Share-Investing-Comp-October-Results&p=284320&viewfull=1#post284320). The two main points to note is that the entries will close about a week before Christmas and that you will get given an entry price from the first trade the day after the entry is posted. The reason for this is that many people (well myself anyway) are far too busy over Christmas/New Year to be fussing with stock picks and this gives everyone two or three weeks to find a suitable moment.

Hoping we can get some more entrants for 2011, despite the ever-shrinking enthusiasm for NZ stocks!

It has been a dramatic month on the NZX with big moves from NZO, PRC, CHA, WDT and a few others... despite that, the top 3 and bottom places are not affected, though some gaps have closed up to give a real race to the finish...:cool:

PRC was a difficult one - I have put it in at last traded price of 88cps. However, I reserve the right to use a value more reflective of the bid/offer should PRC remain suspended through to the close of competition.

Note that, as initially advised, this competition closes on Friday 17th December 2010. I am currently intending to run an identical format for the coming year and am intending to open entries from this weekend until midnight Sunday 21st December. As with this year, your entry prices will be effective from opening trade the day after posting your picks, so there is no disadvantage to picking early. Therefore, time to start thinking about your choices!

I dont follow NZX stocks too closely anymore, but am thinking those companies who could benefit from "leaky homes" & the Christchurch earthquake should do well in 2011, other than that Energy & maybe stocks who could benefit from a strengthening $US?

Can't remember a time when I found it so difficult to "see through" the perceived economic outlook. Except perhaps immediately post-1987!

So, at last the moment you have all been waiting for... the results of the 2010 competition!!! I am not going to congratulate the winner :blush:, but will congratulate Stone Small Green and Upside_umop, who kept a high standard throughout.

In fact, there will be a few feeling let down late in the game, with the impact of PRC and NZO falls impacting heavily, and a significant fall in WDT. As far as the controversial final value of PRC, I have chosen to take the lead from the NZX decision makers and enter PRC at a final value of 0cps, as they have done with the index.

Overall, the performance of ST'ers was uncharacteristically disappointing, with the average turning in a loss of 8.2%, while the favourite 5 stocks fell a massive 20%. This compares with the NZX50 up approx 5.5% for the period. I am certain we will do much better in 2011!

From the quality of the entries, I'd say the 2011 competition is going to be pretty tough. For interest, I am going to add in the top 5 and worst 5 from 2010 at Monday open price.

Was thinking about whether we could try a "timing" competition (rather than "picking") some time - method being that I put forward 5 shares from the NZX50 and everyone gets to pick just one day to buy during the year and one day to sell. When you buy, you get to choose whether you put all your money into one share or buy some of each or any combo in between. However, you only get to do this once, so if you hold several shares, you have to sell all on the same day. Results would be recorded both in terms of overall gain and in gain/day invested. I'm still mulling whether I could do this - would probably need to use prices at the close rather than open, as this is easy to get and means I don't have to update every day! Updates would not be monthly, but based on (say) every 5 completed trades. Comments welcome (if I do this, it might have to start March).

You may recall I tried something similar a few years ago where you could buy and sell your shares at the end of each month. I did not rate it as a success, not that many competitors actually changed shares at all.

So my advice is DON'T DO IT LIZ.
Just stick to the one lot of trouble with the existing competition.

I think maybe if I do try it, might have to start with a short timeframe - say 1 month - and test it that way. It would be hard to keep up momentum though, so probably you are right and too hard.
