Belg - I reckon I'll beat you to the bottom but it could be close as ALF doesn't have much more to fall.

WDT surprisingly has held up well / doing my best with FPA which is now below 50 and although THL and PGW have had some corporate activity they still remain dogs

Still regretting leaving PPL out of my lot of dogs - might have been bottom already then ha ha

Just proves once a dog always a dog eh ... most of these companies are well and truely f####d by the looks of it

I take it you holdign out hope of reaching #1 by the end of the year

Maybe next year there maybe a turnaround .... if Liz volunteers another comp

In what continues to be an amazingly volatile year, there are once again some dramatic place shifts. Please tell me I missed some capital adjustment on BTU... right now, that looks like the stand-out under-performer of the month. CVT and CUE performed well, although CUE's position looks a little shakey given the 21:35 spread.

Good to see Troy responding to a bit of stern talking-to last month and grabbing back 12 places to #88. :t_up:

Voltaire... do I need to say it?

Anyway, well done to Evander who has managed to keep Nevl in second place this month.

As for the "2010 best 5", given the extent of outperformance in that category, I am planning on keeping this data a tightly held secret at the end of the year and only releasing it to the first 5 punters prepared to pay me $10k for it.... :p

Okay, well I PM'd ST Admin to see if they wanted to run the comp next year, but have not heard back - I know there was some talk of using the old ShareChat comp software, but may have lost interest.

So, in absence of an offer from ST to run the comp, I'm giving further notice that I will not be running this next year, so for those who want to have a comp, put your thoughts to whether you could do it next year. I reckon it took me about 6-10 hours to do the set-up at start of year and then up to an hour a month to process results - checking dividends is the most time consuming, but the NZX has made that a little easier to check of late, as now list dividends in a format that at least allows shares to be checked on a one-by-one basis after ex-date.

At the other end, Winner's quest for last place seems to have peaked to early and he has handed the baton to Seagull, whose choice of Kiwi classic blue chip manufacturing (NPX, FPA and RAK) doesn't seem to have proved rewarding.

CJ deserves special mention for achieving that most difficult of feats - no losing share picks. Yes, it is sometimes surprising to realise how difficult that actually is!

Thanks to all who participated in the competition this year. I know it certainly helps me to keep in tune with the market when I run it, so am sorry to not have the time in the coming year. Well read on the pick logic Liz - definitely went for the IT momentum trades in DIL and XRO (only hold DIL myself) and really thought early this year that the dogs of late 2010, PGC and NZO might have pulled up a bit - not to be and in fact PGC/Heartland has turned out to be rat infested...... IFT was a filler to be honest.......seemed undervalued at the time, but the bear kept a lid on it.

Thanks Liz. I thought you would have it all in hand. But for the record I thought it should be spelt out.

Commenting on my top ten finish, I am quietly pleased at how it all panned out. Given my penchant for mainstream selections, I am never going to win this competition. But if I can finish there or thereabouts in the top 10% of competitors and maintain a consistent few percentage points above an index return, then over the years my compounding return should be favourable, and so it has proved.

Telecom has been one of my picks in this competition for as long as I can remember. This year it was my top performer and incredibly, I was the only top ten finisher to select it!

Thanks Liz. Took a look at the performance of the NZX50 and it looks like down about 100 points for the year, a fall of around 3%. I think all of those who managed to beat the index, even if they made a small loss deserve some credit it what it seems was a difficult year.

I have had one or two distractions during the year that meant I didn't do as much behind the scenes work on my own portfolio and the market in general as planned. So it came as a shock for me to see how difficult the year has been for most investors!
