Been noticing a few takeovers recently, TAL before Xmas and RPX today, by overseas listed shareholders that have significant holdings in the target. In case of TAL, Dai-ichi had publically stated that it was on acquisition path after stagnant growth in Japan. Both RPX and TAL were at large premiums. I think this may be a recurring theme as cashed up overseas companies, that already have stakes in Australian listed companies, seek to acquire them to increase growth thus compensating for limited growth potential in their home markets. US companies have record levels of cash on their balance sheets so more M&A is quite likely.

Do any other companies spring to mind? Is there any way of a search filter for companies with overseas shareholders. Often the shareholding sits behind nominees or custodians so it is a little difficult.

You be interested in these numbers - it don't really matter if takeovers happen as long as there is plenty of speculation

One lesson from the RPX takeover announcced yesterday is to look for companies where the majority shareholder wants to take the whole company.

TAL and RPX great eamples ... any others fitting this criteria
