many articles recently focus on commodities for 2011. Besides owning BHP and RIO and BP how else should I add to this area. There are many ways of doing this and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

1. Commodity futures through a broker!!
2. Physical gold/silver from a mint?
3. Metal ETF's on the various markets (eg GOLD ticker on asx which tracks pog)
4. Owning shares in the big producers as you've mentioned... suggest finding the biggest producers on the ASX of the metal you like, for instance CuDeco may appeal...

If you want exposure to the likes of BHP & RIO, plus the large global diversified mining giants like Vale, Xtrata, etc you can always buy into the likes of GMI on the ASX.
