Amoretti LXII

The weary yeare his race now having run,
The new begins his compast course anew:
With shew of morning mylde he hath begun,
Betokening peace and plenty to ensew.
So let us, which this chaunge of weather vew,
Chaunge eeke our mynds and former lives amend,
The old yeares sinnes forepast let us eschew,
And fly the faults with which we did offend.
Then shall the new yeares joy forth freshly send,
Into the glooming world his gladsome ray:
And all these stormes which now his beauty blend,
Shall turne to caulmes and tymely cleare away.
So likewise love cheare you your heavy spright,
And chaunge old yeares annoy to new delight.

AIR - continued earnings growth above market estimates - lots of detail in AIR thread 1yPT $2.00
SKC - modest earnings growth, solid dividend and likely multiple expansion on growth projects 1yPT $4.40
NZX - leveraged to increased listing activity/trading volumes + defensive growth 1yPT $1.50
FBU - US housing market + Chch rebuilding - not cheap but okay 1yPT $10
NEW - Speculative, continued improvement is revenue and benefit of new factory - EM consumer growth 1yPT $0.60

Yes i realise that's the starting price, but we're allowed to change our mind up until the 13th Jan? So if the picks we make today all change adversely by then, we get a free chance to change? I'm not sure if that's the intention of the rule?

Thanks PT!

1. PEB - With approval in march and the begining of US sales we should know by the end of the year if CXbladder is the new way we do things.
2. PGW - As mentioned has bottomed out and should see some modest recovery.
3. TEL - Good Divvie and good potential for cost reduction to get those margins back in line (besides to the best of my knowledge RBS equities has the gloomiest forcast and at 2013 EPS of 17.38 it's not the end of the world.)
4. NPX - Heading in the right direction, should see some benefits from their NuLeap initiative showing through by EOY13.
5. TTK - My fav lil stock, Excellent management (made plenty of $$ out of obsolete tech and are transitioning well) and should see them pull a rabbit or two out of the hat late in the year in regards to their new acquisition. Will be disappointed if its not sitting on at least 3.50 by the time we round things up.

Yay, my very first post! Thanks PT.

I join ST a couple of months ago and have followed this year contest and many of the other threads with interest. Just started investing in NZ in 2009. Make 40+% that year, albeit from a very small base, and then lost it all and much more the next 2 years mostly courtesy of NZO. 2012 had been positive, thanks goodness. Enough about me, my picks are:

CMO - purely based on low PE and high NTA
AIA - the biggest beneficiary of the Hobbit (might even consider buying in?)
HNZ - banking licence to slowly start attracting punters?
NZO - the one that took my pants and all, maybe I took the loss too soon?
ARG - if it all turn to custard, this will be the defensive stock

RAK

Last few years were the bad years for the stocks starting with "P". Next year will be a turn around for them. I count HNZ into one of the "P" stock because of its history related to PGC.
RAK is in trouble. But I think it is not the end of the world for the company. I would like to take the bottom and "gamble" on its turn around in short term.
XRO is in its all time high. I think it would be even higher. Cash is the king. Market still needs to be verified. I am looking forward to seeing how Xero is going to effectively burn its cash and grab the market in US. God bless the US $$$.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10856017grrr. I'm out of town and the Herald never publishes online the tables which go with the stories. It means reading articles like this and B Gaynors articles lose a lot of context.

Pretty average picks for the last competition left me as one of four people with a negative result for the year. Oh well, let's give it another shot...

CAV - very average year for the company in 2012 so looking for an improvement in 2013
CNU - bit of a gamble, with their battles with the regulators. Could go either way
MET - recent inclusion in the NZX50, still at discount to NTA and in growing sector. Hoping to see benefits of 2012 merger being realised in 2013
NEW - company coming back nicely after a couple of tough years
PGW - high commodity prices, good weather and happy farmers, and a company that is getting itself back in shape

Disc - own MET only

Why the gnashing of the teeth CJ. you have already made your pick !!.. Post 48..

Second thoughts maybe ??..

On that subject... I am with you.. Which.. Why.. When... and .. why for... :-(((.. :-(((((.. I do read Brian Gaynors posts.. and do not agree with some of them.. That is life !!..

For this years comp.. I find myself treading gently through a mine-field..

Not the finger hovering over a Buy/Sell order.. Which can be corrected..

24th...

Can do better was in all of my school reports..

WILL DO BETTER THIS YEAR... :-))

So !!! My choices this year ??..

Agree Scotty. 50% increase to take out the minorities or delist which would invoke rule 9

Hey emearg, looks like BLT might make it into the comp :) It just traded at 1.5 cents, and any shareholders who need to buy stock to ensure their minimum shareholding is met will need to buy at 1.9 cents - so it could be up even more shortly.

Great timing and thanks for the heads up! :)

Right I am entering the competition now at 15:20. I have a screenshot at the same time showing market cap exceeding 10 million. This means I comply with rule 1....

Rule #3 = "your entry price is the first-traded price from the day following of the posting of your selections"

You guys need to hope like crazy that no-one else buys any BLT shares today! You want the remaining 15000 shares at 1.5c to go on Monday to register your buy-in price at 1.5 cents, then enjoy 12 months of rising share price as sales increase and new products come online. Could be a nice performer :)

I've got just over a million reasons to hope that somebody might accede to your request emearg - and if they do you wont be alone in adding BLT to the pick list! But good news - a 9.1% upwards movement today. Let's hope the trend is our friend!
now, you got a million reasons to smile.

Thanks again PT - your dedication to this task is remarkable and to be commended.

CNU - the Govt will sort out the pricing drama
DIL - on a roll
HNZ - well below NTA - possible T/O target? (not as hot as FPA this year tho)
SKC - no gamble with this one
FBU - lots of building to be done

Joyeux Noel to all.

Pierre

Hi PT

Now that BLT qualifies for the competition I'd like to include that in place of HNZ please.

Merci

Thanks CB - happy with the closing SP today - though with only one sale at that price it's not looking too secure yet.

No rule 1 and rule 3 are different. Rule 1 (listed on the NZSX or NZAX and with a market cap of greater than $10m at time of entry and not suspended;) states which companies qualify. Blis qualified when I entered. Rule 3 (your entry price is the first-traded price from the day following of the posting of your selections;)is about the price that the BLT portion of my 2013 portfolio is recorded at. It could be more or less than 1.5 cents depending on what happens next Monday (or later should they not trade on Monday)

Should I misunderstand the rules I'm sure PT will clarify. Cheers

Actually it will be even better if somebody matches the current highest bid which is 1.2 cents. Perhaps you could flog a few on Monday morning Nigel? It would be a fantastic belated Xmas present!! ;)

I am amending Rule No 1

from:

1) listed on the NZSX or NZAX and with a market cap of greater than $10m at time of entry and not suspended;

to:

1) listed on the NZSX or NZAX and with a market cap of greater than $10m at the close of trade of the current or previous trading day. Additionally the selection must not be suspended;

[Thus for BLT it can be chosen as a legal entry from Today until the end of Monday 31st Dec, even if the closing price is less than $0.015 on Monday.
It will be eligible on Tuesday if it closes at $0.015 or higher on Monday.]

Right, might as well enter then....

I'll run with:
BLT (still cheap, clinically-proven product, new products due 2013, massive potential)
RYM (proven performer, demand sector)
FPH (well-run, good products, good run for past 6 months, no reason it shouldn't continue)
FBU (housing shortage, christchurch rebuild)
PGW (hopefully has turned the corner!)

Thanks :)

Thanks for running the comp again PT, my picks for 2013

IFT - Energy play, large holding in TPW, 2/3rds Wellington Airport, 50% Jv in "Z" (old Shell downstream assets) & other bits & pieces
EBO - Healthcare supplier, well run company, & i seem to have become a "consumer" of health services of late through injuries!
RBC - Main Assets; holding in Tenon & ArborGen, upside from US Housing turnaround (via Tenon) & seeds technology (ArborGen).
DGL - Viticulture pick, premium wine brands, well run company, pays a dividend & industry coming through bad times/oversupply
CUE - Oil & Gas company - mostly to appease Troyvdh ^ :D

Cheers

I trust that those who have selected BLT for the 2013 competition and do not already have them in their portfolio will do their bit for the SP by purchasing at least 25,000 shares (the new minimum holding) in the next week or so. That could help to give us all a head start in the competition and at the same time assist current holders with their portfolio valuation.

Just a thought.

I just wonder whether this would breach any laws of the land - manipulating share prices for a contest - given that people have left comments in this thread.

I hope I'm just being silly season paranoid here, but it would be a real nuisance if Blis shareholders got in trouble for manipulating a penny dreadful's price and sharetrader.co.nz suffered some associated fallout.

Fools all of them sparks ..... there was only one sale at 1.5 cents on Friday anyway and it just happened top be the alst one ..... back to 1.1 cents or less tomorrow and a bad start to the compo for them eh

Never knew $750 'invested' in a stock could cause so much fuss

Hah Sparky - I don't think a tongue in cheek comment about an "investment" of about $300 will excite too many people. Still I guess you never know - we do live in a PC environment these days - especially in Central Auckland it seems!

And Winner - a price of 1.1 cents or so on Monday would be rather good as a start point for the competition for those of us who selected BLT on Friday.

Happy new year!

Unless the buyer or seller was an insider I don't think you need to worry about any fall out. So yes somebody late next year might buy and sell some at 5, 6 or perhaps 7 cents for cents for a nice 500% gain. That would put the Blis holders in front...if only in this competition!

Not so sure about the fools bit Winner - opened today at 1.4 - low of 1.3 - and closed again at 1.5. So far, that's just over 100% return for those of us who stocked up in real life at 0.7cps a couple of months back!

And as I interpret the latest rules we'll open in the comp at 1.4cps. I'm happy - roll on BLT.

Hi PT

Can you please change CRP to CNU.

Not sure 2013 will be CRP's year. Too many hurdles for it to get over before its a viable investment.

Cheers

I am intrigued that some would enter their choice and not hold them all. I would much prefer to take a loss in an underperforming company, sell, and reinvest in a company that promises to give greater rewards. But, I have to say that I am a very small investor and selling a losing hand would not rock the boat too much. Still, if one believes that a stock will 'perform' well in the coming year, why not buy into it.

Do appreciate very much the comments and criticisms through this forum. And thanks to PT.

Right, I've been deliberating over my picks, and this is what I've decided on....

DIL - we all hope we know the story on this
PPL - I feel like this year will be much better now that the UK store issue is resolved and retail seems to be improving in nz
RYM - strong growth, hope it continues
SUM - much the same as above, seems very promising
NWF - I really really hope this is the year that the wind blows a lot and this company has a major turnaround!

disc: I own all of these, for better or worse...

dear garfy...happy new year....you are totally and utterly correct....any fool can "place a bet"...but there is nothing...nothing ...like having "skin in the game"...many folk hate me for this stance...often when speaking to a broker (in years past) I would enquire as to there holdings...inevatiably...there was a blank...response...for so long and probably quite rightlyfully so the share market has been treated like the "TAB"....that is trully sad...yet i can promise you that further responses to this post will be indeed unkind....in fact you could put money on it....cheers troy

Hi PT,

Many thanks for your industry in running this competition. I think 2013 is going to be a very difficult year with most shares fully priced. So my strategy will be to stick to my high dividend paying core, and look for those shares with a bud of growth potential that might help to protect my capital should the NZX slide. So here is my portfolio for 2013:

RBD: A fully priced yet predictible business, but 'Carl Juniors' has the potential to inspire potential shareholders. And the bottom line should creep forward with the continuing sale of certain loss leading Pizza Hut outlets
SCT: Fully priced based on historical performance. Yet the XRF joint venture in Australia looks promising. And how many bad years can appliance line manufacturing have in a row? My best performing share last year and 'momentum' keeps me in for 2013.
SKC: Dithering over the International Convention Centre by the government has harmed the company's reputation on the market. Yet behind the scenes there has been some impressive knitting being stuck to.
TEL: I have the feeling that 'mobile' is where the profits will be made in the next five years, and IMO TEL is the place to be to profit from this. Moutter will make his mark! I also like the fact that none of the brokers are picking it! The dark horse in my stable.
TUA: The dullest of all my selections, and for that reason alone potentially the best. The market has recognised the increase in the NZ vehicle market after some tough years but not I think the locked in market share gains for TUA.

A nice easy entry for you to amend for this year PT. I am sticking to exactly the picks I made last year!

The Americans. Everyones hoping for a Nasdaq listing this year.

It would be a brave move to try and short DIL. If a Nasdaq listing does go ahead DIL has a very bright year to come.

I know, which is why I'd want to know more, and time it well.

I don't follow DIL and am quite sure everyone who has picked it knows it a hell of a lot better than me.

The reason for my comment is the sheer number of people who have picked it. In my experience, when everybody has the same view, there is a good chance everyone is wrong. Not "wrong" as in "wrong idea", but wrong as in the result, because generally the weight of money that has already voted.

I take the point re the Nasdaq listing though. Good luck to all those that have picked it. Due to the sheer number, DIL will have a major influence on this years comp.

DIL is my largest holding.

I own 3 of the 5. I would own all 5 but only recently started researching PGW and CNU and don't intend on jumping in blind.
I'd also like slightly cheaper entry prices than they are currently sitting.

STC.. This is a competition.. None of yours or any one else's money is at stake.

If you think your holdings are good enough to win.. That is OK..

Many I think are putting in at least one dog ( some more than one ) in the hope that it will come through and give them the bragging rights..

I like this compo for many reasons one being it is very educational..

Still trying to work out my picks :-))

STC - the difference is in this comp, there is only one winner, but in real life, a lot of us here are already winners (by the fact we have money to invest).

If there was an option to put it all on red in the hope of winning the comp, I'm sure someone would take it but they wouldn't do in real life.

It's not at all stressful to have 20% of your competition "equity" on some penny dreadful longshot that just might be a 10 bagger. Not many would punt 20% of their actual cash in the same way.

I would be keen to know whether all the people who have picked DIL actually own it. Or for that matter, own all the five stocks they picked. If not, why not?

Disc: I own all the five stocks I picked and in sizeable dollar values.

I don't own DIL but then again I haven't picked it. But I do own the five shares that I have picked, and my theoretical cashed up value in each is comparable (except RBD where I have a 'double helping'). My aim in entering the competition is to provide a quick gauge on how I am doing throughout the year, verses the index. That is why I time my entry on 1st January, so that I have the same 'start point' as the index for the year. The five shares I have picked are also by far the largest five in my NZX portfolio too. So how well I do in the competition is a pretty close match for how well I am doing in real life on the NZX.

Of course different people have different reasons for entering the competition, and each to their own. I tend to favour the 'Sparky' viewpoint, of backing your competition entry here with your own money in real life. But obviously if your aim is to actually win the competition, the best strategy would be a high risk one that many here adopt. And if that kind of thinking 'floats your boat', then good luck to you. I wouldn't want to suggest that Sparky's competition philosophy, that I happen to agree with, is in any way 'superior' to those who choose to play what is an on line game after all, differently.

Playing devils advocate a bit but it can be useful to compare the sharemarket to the TAB. Except for one difference the share market is a positive sum game and the TAB is a negative sum game.

It would seem more reasonable that if a company went under and ceased trading that the unlucky punter was now down to four stocks in the contest.

This way, the upside by choosing a penny dreadful that quintupled to a higher price is matched by the downside risk of losing that stock from the contest.

That would be more realistic and I would support such a change even though I have picked BLT which is top of STC's penny dreadful list...

CJ
04-01-2013, 02:02 PM
If a stock delists, shouldn't the holder get to roll over the remainder of their initial 20% allocation? If the amount left over is zero, then case closed.agree and assume that is how it works. If a penny dreadful drips to zero, you have nothing to buy a new pick with.

Hi PT. Thanks for running last years comp.

Here are my picks made this year after 20 mins research! (Forgot about the comp until now)

TEL: At a lowish point and good divi. (Currently holding)
WHS: Good divi yeild, if the economy picks up should do well
GMT: One of the better property shares from a quick compare
CNU: Potential for growth in this one.
SKL: Good divi, currently in an uptrend.

If it went phut then the monies will be zero (at most).

PT,
Thanks for running the competition. I note that only Black Gnat and myself have picked Dorchester Pacific DPC. This is a stand out stock. But why are Black Gnat's and my results on DPC so different.? He is showing positive on DPC whilst I am negative. Surely we should be the same. No big dealbut I am curious.

Thought that I will save PT his time by replying to this. Your entry price for DPC is the price that it is first traded after you pick it. As you and BG submitted yours and his picks on different days, your entry prices are different and so are the result.

Hi PT & thanks again for managing this.
ALF have 90.8 miilion shares on issue. This means they need to get to 11.1 cents to reach a market cap of NZ$10MM.
More out of curiosity than anything else, would I be allowed to enter ALF in the comp with an entry price of 11.1 cents?

Having said that I have no trouble with anyone owning none of their picks, or all of them.

I would be keen to know whether all the people who have picked DIL actually own it. Or for that matter, own all the five stocks they picked. If not, why not?

Disc: I own all the five stocks I picked and in sizeable dollar values.

Sparky
I own 4 of the 5 counters I picked. intend to look at AIA when I get the time to do it. not in a hurry as still not sure if everything it already toppish or the bulls will be charging in the new year. what is your read of the market direction?

Cool Bear

Sparky. Thanks a lot for your reply. Agree fully with all your 6 points. Was about 50% invested two months ago but recently increased it to almost 2/3rd. But I don't think I will go near or past 3/4 for the next few months. Just being careful. thanks again. CB

06-01-2013, 05:10 PM
I agree with you, Sparky, that we don't know how lucky we are but I have a rather more cautious view on the year ahead - or even the first six months thereof. Can't remember a time when I've found it harder to select stocks with a real prospect of increased earnings, as opposed to those offering a superior yield to cash, deposits, bonds etc. I just don't think that economic conditions favour growth - rather it will be competition for solid earning stocks that should/might propel SP's.

Having got that off my chest, my selections are:

EBO - one of my solid earners.
SKL - ditto
STU - recovering, with a bit of help from ChCh rebuild
BTU - a punt on progress with the Buller project.
POT - one of NZ's key pieces of infrastructure.

I hold the first four and will (hopefully) buy POT in the unlikely event of SP weakness.

Thanks, PT, for running the comp.

:)

AWF .Great ROE,good divie, very good management, strong balance sheet, and one I had last year.
TUA,As above, also finance side is growing.
SKL,As above, growth may be slower this year, although new ChCh factory will mean we are "well positioned."
HNZ.Starting to believe what I have posted on HNZ thread.!!!!!! Replaces last years pick FRE.
SKT,great yield, and with old TVs needing replacing SKT may pick up more customers.Repaces RYM as 68% growth may not be repeted this year.
I hold shares in all except FRE in which a trust I am a trustee hold.

[NPX(46.56) MHI(43.83) GFF(31.03) NZO(30.17) WDT(-23.81)

This year I'll pick:
MHI - Franking credits become transferrable to NZ residents?
GFF - Turn around still in play. This will work itself out and I'd expect a reversal of some impairment losses eventually.
NZO - NZX's favourite oiler isn't it?
WDT - I have picked this every year, and every year it has let me down....I really want this to be the turn around year!
SUM - Alternative to RYM and probably a bit more upside given the relative market cap. In anycase, i don't know much about it otherwise...

Will only change one pick.....hopefully this will beat the market.

No. Until the cut off on 13th Jan if you change a selection then the new selection is not weighted by the old selections profit/gain.

After then if we get into delisting territory (please, please not this year!! :scared:) then the replacement selection is weighted.

Hope that helps

I think we should call the competition off now and just say I won.

i.e. I have no confidence of retaining top spot!

CJ

Can I change TEL into BLS (blis). Decided to try and rank higher this year so a dividend stock isn't going to cut it, you need a multibagger.

Considered swapping out FPH as well but a US$ play throws something different into the mix- surely we can't go much higher than 84 but surely we can go lower.
I have gone reasonably defensive as I am not sure what type of year we will have:

DIL Still got plenty to grow
RYM can still grow independent of economy
FBU chch rebuild
TEL defensive yield pick
FPH safe stock that will benefit alot if the dollar reverses this year ( I don't think it will but just in case)
