Hello guys,

Just stumbled across this forum after recently moving to New Zealand. Delighted to have somewhere to discuss stocks! As you might have guessed from the name, I'm a old school value investor at heart (although its hard to find value at the minute!) and i've started to get very interested in small cap stocks lately. Surprised by the amount of small companies that are public in NZ.

Had a few questions,

Is there any discount brokers with no account charges/maintenance fees?

What is the capital gains tax on profits situation here?

Give me some value NZ stocks to research :)

Cheers

Brokers: ASB Securities (https://www.asbsecurities.co.nz/), Direct Broking (http://www.directbroking.co.nz/directtrade/static/home.aspx) & ANZ Share & Bond Trading (http://www.anzshareandbondtrading.co.nz/static/home.aspx). (The latter two are both owned by ANZ and are essentially the same thing I believe)

Capital Gains Tax: You have just asked the most complex tax question in New Zealand. The answer is No there is no Capital Gains Tax here.
But
You are taxed on the profits (less losses) from buying and selling shares (or anything else) if you intent is to buy and sell for a (capital) profit.
If you buy shares with the intent of deriving an income from them (i.e. dividends) and later sell then you are not taxed on the capital profits (less losses).

So now you have lots of questions about intent and the answer is it depends.

Value stocks? There are only 171 shares on the NZX (https://nzx.com/) so you run a quick eye over most of them. But I do like HNZ & SUM at the moment.

Best Wishes

Give me some value NZ stocks to research

https://www.nzx.com/markets/NZSX/securities

There is a list of 149 of the stocks on the NZX.

If you have a few hours free on the weekend you should be able to filter out the rubbish and be left with no more than 10 companies I'd say. That's how I created my watchlist.

I'm with ASB Securities (a broking business of ASB Bank) which is a discount broker and it provides research reports through Morning Star.

I only have six companies on my watchlist on the NZX Market:

ANZ- ANZ Banking Group (banking services)
FRE- Freightways (courier transport & data storage)
MFT- Mainfreight (worldwide logistics & transport)
POT- Port of Tauranga (shipping port & other services)
RYM- Ryman Healthcare (retirement homes)
SUM- Summerset Group (retirement homes)

I prefer to trade on the ASX (Australian market) as I find the market has a broader range of good companies selling at discounts more often. All New Zealand brokers should allow you to trade both the New Zealand and Australian markets pretty easily.

Here is the full list of the companies on the ASX

http://www.asx.com.au/asx/research/listedCompanies.do

I'm assuming you want my current watchlist also so these are below. I add/remove various ones occasionally out of interest to read their annual reports and any updates but the ones below are my constant ones that I've kept on my watchlist

CCP- Credit Corp Group (debt collection)
DLX- Dulux (paints, home improvement)
NHF- NIB Holdings (health insurance)
OFX- Oz Forex (Foreign Exchange)
RHC- Ramsay Healthcare (hospitals)
RWH- Royal Wolf Holdings (container sales/rental)
SNL- Supply Network Limited (truck/bus parts)
VRT- Virtus Health (IVF treatments)

I would suggest reading Martin Roths "top stocks 2013/2014" books as he puts together a decent list of 100 stocks each year on the ASX.

Other companies I've looked into in the past on the top of my head:

1300 Smiles
Austbrokers
Greencross
Steadfast
Coca Cola Amatil
Thorn Group
Tox Free Solutions
McMillan Shakespeare
Invocare
G8 Education
Flexigroup
Blackmores
Car Sales
REA Group
Seek
Cochlear
Freedom Foods
Flight Centre
Navitas
Slater & Gordon
The Reject Shop
Woolworths

The only company of these I've ever owned previously were Coca Cola Amatil which I kept for a year or so before selling. All the others just had something I wasn't quite happy with. I currently own Supply Network Limited and Credit Corp Group.

Thanks for all the replies lads. With the discount broker from asb, is their maintenance/inactivity fees?

I'll get started by researching the list of stocks from born2invest from both the nz and oz markets

What about buying US or Euro stocks? Do the fees go up massively?

Hi and welcome to ST, Value Hunter.

https://www.asbsecurities.co.nz/

Have a cruise around the site, rates/fees are disclosed under the Home tab drop down, 'Getting Started' tab, along with plenty of other info.

The only fee is when you buy and sell.
