Looks like these three need their own thread as it is talked about mainly on the NZO thread.
There are three Canadian Oil Juniors that have major permits on the East Coast Basin of the North Island. They are/

TAG Oil - TAG Oil Ltd (http://www.tagoil.com/)
NZEC - New Zealand Energy Corp (http://www.newzealandenergy.com/)
MES - Marauder Resources East Coast Inc (http://www.stockhouse.com/companies/bullboard/v.mes/marauder-resources-east-coast-inc)

All three trade through the TSX. (http://www.tmx.com/en/index.html)

I've invested in MES & NZEC. As they say in North America, GLTA.

Thanks Cuzzie

I don't have any TSK.. stocks.. I guess Direct Broking.. can buy for me,

Could you give us a brief rationale on why you went for NZEC and MES....just wondering. Know nothing about them yet.

Thanks,

Best Regards

I would go for TAG too but feel NZEC & MES have the most to gain right now. I've already missed the boat with regards to TAG as the have been performing well back on the Taranaki side for a while now and their share price reflects that. NZEC's drilling over there too with success and MES is just playing the smart game. The rules state they can't play the waiting game for to much longer on the East Coast and both TAG and NZEC are about to spud-in on several different drill sites. MES is smack bang in the middle of TAG's permit & NZEC's permit so a strike for one of those two is a strike for them without doing a lot of groundwork. There is talk that TAG or NZEC will buy MES out, that is just talk though.
I used ASB Securities this time, but will be using Interactive Brokers (https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/main.php) next time.

Stockhouse is a great place to get more info and keep up to date with the highs and lows of these three Canadian Juniors

Hi Cuzzie,

best wishes for the new year.

what I hear is that there are a number of North American interest in MES property. Most I assume are waiting for TAG's detailed testing in Jan or Feb. I would guess that the involvement of a Major or Super Major would send MES share price through the roof. Hopefully that is who is interested.

Even at 5.5 cents mes can easily double from here with some involvement of moneyed player or some good test results from TAG. Not to mention NZ drilling also this year.

Its a bit of a no brainer that buying at this price will probably be a good bet given all the activity going on the East Coast this year. Buy now and sell later this year.

Good luck all.

McB Happy new year to you too McBeanburger & hope you had a good one. I like what your saying, music to my ears. This is what I've been thinking all along as this plays out & is looking more and more likely that it will unfold as you said above. I'm looking at buying more shares tomorrow once my bank transfer goes through. Hope it doesn't climb again before I get in, but in the big picture I guess it doesn't matter too much. It is a no brainer for sure. GLTA.

Well it didn't climb again, just did not drop to my bid price. I chased it up and finally nailed it at CAD$.05 today via ASB again. After doing the sums, I decided ASB Securities aren't too bad after all, they give a bloody good service & are locale. The exchange rate between Canada and NZ is not so bad. Big amount of shares(for me - huge) but I'm relaxed & excited about it. I'm excited about all three but feel MES has the most potential for the long run as it plays out.
Lots of drama on TAG, MES & NZEC on Stockhouse at the moment McBeanburger, those guys need to chill. Panic makes good share prices nose-dive should not complain too much. I'm leaving TAG at this stage but might look at NZEC if they dip down once more.

Hi Cuzzie,

500k not bad and at a good price imo. market for explorers is bad have a look at Africa Oil - they keep hitting oil and keep getting wacked. I believe this down to the amount of goosing going in the main stockmarket - the big boys are out until we have a correction. my guess is feb for correction.

meanwhile - let's hope mes comes out with some news regarding jv's and TAG start testing their EC well.

good luck mate with your purchase!

good luck mate with your purchase! Yeah cheers for that McBeanburger. I agree TAG needs to get on with the EC and NZ just needs a wee bit more luck and then on with EC too. It's all in place, now we just need some action.
McB, what are the rules concerning MES and a drilling time frame, that could be a problem if TAG holds off.

Taranakai Shallow Miocene and Deep Eocene Operations Update

Over the past several years, TAG has focused its efforts on developing the shallow Miocene targets (~2000 meters depth), with excellent success, as shown by thirty-one successful wells drilled to date. Given this success, TAG has added a deep Eocene drilling component to its Taranaki Basin operations with a goal to capture reserves several times larger than what is being achieved in the shallow Miocene drilling program. In the current quarter, TAG successfully drilled, logged and cased its first deep Eocene well, Cardiff-3, which intersected 45 meters (148 feet) of potential pay in the successful Kapuni Formation. The Company anticipates production testing this well in the near future. An independent assessment was prepared by Sproule International Limited with an effective date of July 31, 2013, which has estimated the undiscovered resource potential on the Cardiff prospect on a P50 basis at 160 billion cubic feet gas and 5.59 million barrels of natural gas liquids(1). Sproule is a qualified reserves evaluator in accordance with NI 51-101 and the Canadian Oil and Gas Evaluations Handbook.

TAG Oil's shallow Miocene drilling program has continued concurrently with the deep Eocene drilling program; most recently eight oil wells have been drilled from the Company's Cheal-E and G sites, delineating a much larger oil saturated area than originally anticipated at the Cheal field. Utilizing TAG's 100% owned processing infrastructure, testing and first production has commenced on three of the five wells drilled from the Cheal E Site, with over 50,000 barrels of light oil produced to date from the new discovery site. The recent drilling success in the Cheal-E and G sites provides TAG with many years of low-risk development drilling opportunities and additional step out locations, such as the coming Southern Cross well that could further expand the scope and size of the Cheal pool.

East Coast Basin Update

TAG has now received the results of the Reservoir Characterization Study ("RCS") from independent experts in unconventional plays on the Ngapaeruru-1 well, the first ever East Coast Basin unconventional test well. The RCS study provides the first true unconventional data set ever acquired in the East Coast Basin and provides a number of encouraging attributes, and importantly confirmation that TAG's drilling mudlog interpretations from the Ngapaeruru-1 well demonstrate that oil is being generated in the Whangai source rocks.

Given the results of the study, TAG will now perforate and production test Ngapaeruru-1 in the coming months; with the goal being to prove the concept of moveable hydrocarbons from within the source rocks, a critical step to pursuing the economic viability of this unconventional play.

Details of the RCS report indicate a number of positives with respect to the Whangai source rocks as a viable unconventional oil target:

a)The Whangai Formation source rocks penetrated in Ngapaeruru-1 is 293 meters thick, it's highly naturally fractured, the fractures are open, and each fracture zone correlates well with elevated oil and gas mudlog shows.
b)The hydrocarbon-filled porosity exceeds the minimum standard thresholds for unconventional reservoirs.
c)Permeabilities within the Whangai section exceed standard unconventional reservoir thresholds
d)The Whangai Formation has very low clay content, indicating fracture stimulation can be highly effective.
e)Vitrinite reflectance analysis places the Whangai source rocks in the oil/condensate window, correlating well with the 50-degree API oil seeps in this basin.
f)Ngapaeruru-1 intercepted a lateral equivalent of the true organic rich Whangai source rocks interpreted in the basin from oil seep fingerprinting, indicating that the Whangai source rocks have lateral variations as expected.
g)A deeper basinal setting (which is planned for the next two wells in the program) will look to identify increased TOC contents of the reservoir, which at Ngapaeruru-1 is slightly less than 1% (with 2% being the standard threshold) indicating subsequent wells may be more optimally located to intercept the ideal source rock origin.

The quality of the data set acquired at Ngapaeruru-1 is state-of-the-art, and, as expected, has provided the first ever specialized interpretation necessary to help unlock the major potential of this unconventional play.

TAG Oil Ltd.

TAG Oil Ltd. (http://www.tagoil.com/) is a Canadian-based production and exploration company with operations focused exclusively in New Zealand. With 100% ownership over all its core assets, including extensive oil and gas production infrastructure, TAG is enjoying significant organic value creation through exploration success and ongoing development and appraisal drilling of several light oil and gas discoveries. As New Zealand's leading explorer, TAG actively drills high-impact conventional and unconventional exploration prospects identified in the Taranaki Basin, East Coast Basin and Canterbury Basin that covers more than 2.7 million net acres of land, prospective for major discovery in New Zealand.

TAG Oil has adopted the standard of six thousand cubic feet of gas to equal one barrel of oil when converting natural gas to "BOEs". BOEs may be misleading, particularly if used in isolation. A BOE conversion ratio of 6Mcf: 1 Bbl is based on an energy equivalency conversion method primarily applicable at the burner tip and does not represent a value equivalency at the wellhead.

(1) Cardiff Resource Estimates Footnote:

Best Estimate is considered to be the best estimate of the in-place volumes that will actually be present. It is equally likely that the actual in-place volumes will be greater or less than the best estimate. If probabilistic methods are used, there should be at least a 50 percent probability (P50) that the in-place volumes will equal or exceed the best estimate.

Undiscovered Petroleum Initially-In-Place (equivalent to undiscovered resources) is that quantity of petroleum that is estimated, on a given date, to be contained in accumulations yet to be discovered. The recoverable portion of undiscovered petroleum initially in place is referred to as "prospective resources," the remainder as "unrecoverable."

Prospective resources are those quantities of petroleum estimated, as of a given date, to be potentially recoverable from undiscovered accumulations by application of future development projects. Prospective resources have both an associated chance of discovery and a chance of development. There is no certainty that any portion of the resources will be discovered. If discovered, there is no certainty that it will be commercially viable to produce any portion of the resources.

Exploration for hydrocarbons is a speculative venture necessarily involving substantial risk. TAG's future success in exploiting and increasing its current reserve base will depend on its ability to develop its current properties and on its ability to discover and acquire properties or prospects that are capable of commercial production. However, there is no assurance that TAG's future exploration and development efforts will result in the discovery or development of additional commercial accumulations of oil and natural gas. In addition, even if further hydrocarbons are discovered, the costs of extracting and delivering the hydrocarbons to market and variations in the market price may render uneconomic any discovered deposit. Geological conditions are variable and unpredictable. Even if production is commenced from a well, the quantity of hydrocarbons produced inevitably will decline over time, and production may be adversely affected or may have to be terminated altogether if TAG encounters unforeseen geological conditions. TAG is subject to uncertainties related to the proximity of any reserves that it may discover to pipelines and processing facilities. It expects that its operational costs will increase proportionally to the remoteness of, and any restrictions on access to, the properties on which any such reserves may be found. Adverse climatic conditions at such properties may also hinder TAG's ability to carry on exploration or production activities continuously throughout any given year.

The significant positive factors that are relevant to the resource estimate are:

Proven production in close proximity;
Proven commercial quality reservoirs in close proximity; and
Oil and gas shows while drilling wells nearby.

The significant negative factors that are relevant to the resource estimate are:

Tectonically complex geology could compromise seal potential; and
Seismic attribute mapping in the two, deep, liquids-rich gas plays can be indicative but not certain in identifying proven resource.

Well, if you hold one, all three or like me just two of the above mentioned stocks I feel for you right now, but let me explain more before you draw any conclusions. I do have two of the three, but wish I had the trifecta. It's like having the favorite, in fact all three favorites in the big horse race of the year and you know all three are going to place, but early on they are all at the rear of the field. Half way though and one is doing OK but still no where near the front, another has faded further back & the third really is not doing anything good at all. Moving onto real-time right now and there is a power cut just as things are heating up. That's right TAG Oil has a news blackout just as they were running through the field, MES will finish fine if TAG placers and NZEC is sure to get up there. She sure is tough backing these three Canadian Oil Juniors, but I'm loving it and would not miss it for the world. Pending news any day now & that news will make or break. S.P on the rise points to something, time to have a breather. I'm loving it and feel I have made the right decision, then I remember what the wife said she would do if I'm wrong and I'm getting all nervous again, I don't want to loose my member:ohmy:ship so come on TAG, say something --- please.

Moving quickly on from my post above - OK, I have just received information that TAG Oils Ngapaeruru-1 well near Dannevirke has enormous pressure and a large well head was required to keep the pressure down. I'm north of Auckland and have seven day commitments so can't get down there to check it out. This means big news for TAG and mind blowing news for MES. Is there anybody who is local to the Dannevirke site that could tale a photo of the well head. P.M me if you like. TAG have been sitting on news for a while now and have a complete news black out. Anything appreciated. Photo will be forwarded on to a contact in North America.

Sorry cuzzie, but chances are very low that oil will ever be flowed out of that well. If TAG were playing it straight they would have tested it by now instead of leaving it. Sure there is pressure there, but that does not mean it will flow oil

They have tested it and the well has been given a green light. That's old news. Strong shows of hydrocarbons gave the green light. TAG has said they may not even have to frack and will merely perforate the source rock. Looks like the source is naturally fractured. TAG have said the first step will be to perf and then decide on fracking. notie, there are many reasons why TAG are quite right now and I can tell you, no oil from Ngapaeruru-1 is not one of the reasons. Lots of positive chinwagging going on right now. We will have to wait and see I guess.

We things look very bad for NZEC and I think it is all over for that company. As for TAG, too much spin for too long and I think the share holders are waking up to it.You just going on both SP dropping for NZEC & TAG, there is a lot more to the story than just that. Barrels of oil per day was down on the NZEC forecast and TAGs K3E in Cardiff is a duster, that's what drove the SP for both down for their 1/4 results. Both are still making money in the nakie. notie, Taranaki is just to help pay the bills, the real action for them both is on the East Coast and that my friend is just heating up. Now is a great time to buy into TAG and that is just what the TAG management are doing. Take a look at this from a Canadian inside trader website. http://www.tmxmoney.com/TMX/HttpController?GetPage=SearchInsiderTrade&Language=en&Submit=Submit&QuerySymbol=tao&x=43&y=7

MES, who is in between TAG & NZEC on the East Coast has has a lot of interest this week too. This is all feed by news that a second well on the E.C has just been given the green light. She's all go from here on in and will be adding more myself this week. NZEC is well under valued & will only go one way from here, up. I would look at buying in on TAG tomorrow on any drops. You would need to place your order in now though being in NZ.

Stock at 52 weeks lows at $2.39 USD ($2.54 CAD). The stock is the cheapest it has been in terms of EV/2P and the EV/BOPD is $61k. This is very compelling for a company making $59.63 netbacks per BOE with no debt. Production is struggling to grow in net terms, stuck at 1,500 but guidance is set for 1,800 bopd from shallow production only. Tag as a shallow producer only is a little stale but these strong revenues drive a large exploration programme. Each play in this programme could have transformational impact.
1 - Following the completion of the 2nd East Coast well, to spud this month, the rig comes back to Cheal to test the upper two target horizons of Cardiff-3. These 2 horizons are significant producers elsewhere in New Zealand and the company has every confidence of flowing gas. Any production will be ready for market as the company can leverage its production facilities at Cheal. This is a great example of the overlooked potential in Tag Oil.
2 - After completion of the 3rd East Coast well later this calendar year, the company will undertake to test all 3 East Coast wells. Any evidence that the East Coast is commercial will mean a large re-rate for Tag. By large I mean many multiples of the current price. The East Coast potential OIP is measured in billions and the current 2P reserves of 48mmboe will be totally eclipsed. It is not all home runs; they have a tightening operational environment to contend with and to say that fracking in New Zealand is unpopular is an understatement. However, the East Coast play also has a component of conventional resources that may not require fracking.
3 - In addition, Tag also has an offshore play; a further deeper prospect in Heatseeker and further work to do on Cheal and Sidewinder.
Conclusion: Undervalued today based on shallow production ignoring several exciting exploration plays that are well underway. By Christmas Tag could be a very different company with regards to production and reserves. Dare to dream - if the East Coast even looks close to commercial I expect fireworks.
Loss of Sleep Factor: 0 out of 7 nights. They have plenty of money, a competent management team and solid baseline production to fund the operation going forwards.

South Island platinum tender awarded (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11298543)

3:51 PM Thursday Jul 24, 2014

Taranaki oil and gas explorer Tag Oil, of Canada, is expanding into the New Zealand minerals sector through its 49 percent ownership of a listed Canadian explorer, Coronado Resources, which has been awarded five New Zealand mineral exploration permits to hunt for platinum in the South Island.

Coronado subsidiary Lynx Platinum, was the only company awarded metallic minerals exploration licences in the government's New Zealand Platinum Tender 2013.

Of the five exploratory permits awarded, three cover 355 square kilometers east of Murchison, part of the Crown-owned conservation estate, with the remaining two covering a 168 sqkm area north of Invercargill. Each permit lasts for five years and allows the company to explore for metallic minerals. Lynx Platinum was the only company granted permits and will have to reapply for a mining permit if it makes any "economic discovery", minister of energy and resources Simon Bridges said in a statement.

"Lynx will spend around $3 million over the first three years, and this could rise to $7.5 million within five years if the initial work is successful," Bridges said. "It is encouraging to see a new minerals operator enter the New Zealand market, especially when the international price of metallic mineral commodities is low and investors are understandably selective about where in the world they put their money."

New Zealand's mineral sector contributes $1 billion to the economy in gross domestic product, Bridges said.

Coronado also wholly owns Opunake Hydro in Taranaki and is in turn 49 percent owned by Canadian miner TAG Oil, which has had considerable success with commercial onshore oil and gas discoveries in the Taranaki region, and holds oil and gas exploration permits on the East Coast and Canterbury.

The five permits awarded today allow Lynx to explore for gold, silver, copper, and aluminium but the focus is on platinum group metals, as the locations are "highly prospective" for those metals, a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Education spokesperson said. New Zealand hasn't had any mining of platinum before, apart from small scale alluvial production of platinum in the late 19th and early 20th century in Southland, he said.

Lynx Platinum will still need to negotiate access with landholders and in the case of conservation land must meet criteria set out by the Department of Conservation. Depending on the council they may also need to apply for resource consent.

The government has been running competitive block offer tenders since 2012, reserving prospective areas of land for companies to win the right to explore. A 419 sq km area at Grey River on the West Coast, 1700 sq km block east of Nelson and 730 sq km west of Murchison had also been offered in the platinum tender.

The tender ran from March last year in consultation with iwi, the Department of Conservation and local authorities and closed in April.

TAG could be a household name real soon in NZ.

Here we go. TAG's has an estimated, on a mid-range (P50) basis, an undiscovered resource potential of approximately 14 billion barrels of oil initially in place within less than 20% of the Company's East Coast Basin acreage. They will be drilling to a total depth of approximately 3,600 meters.
The Waipawa Black Shale and Whangai Formations are the source of the high quality (50-degree API) light oil found in nearby oil seeps, core sampling, and shallow drilling in the Waitangi area. With these seeps all around their well site and with all seismic data and other testing done, TAG are targeting the oil directly from the source. It's fair to say, "I am very excited".

Lynx acquires five permits in New Zealand 2014-07-31 13:38 ET - News Release Mr. Daniel Brown reports CORONADO AWARDED PLATINUM GROUP METALS EXPLORATION PERMITS IN NEW ZEALAND On July 23, 2014, New Zealand's Minister of Energy and Resources, Simon Bridges, announced that Coronado Resources Ltd.'s 100-per-cent-owned subsidiary, Lynx Platinum Ltd., was awarded five mineral exploration permits totalling 129,202 acres in the New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals 2013 platinum blocks offer. Platinum group metals (PGM) occurrences are common in New Zealand, and there is considerable potential for PGM production in New Zealand, both from hardrock deposits and alluvial concentrations. All five permits awarded to Coronado are prospective for PGM discovery within the Longwood Range area, where Coronado has been awarded two permits and which is considered to be the most advanced area in terms of exploration undertaken to date. Numerous publications have included mention of the PGM potential in the Longwood Range, and recent aeromagnetic surveys, fieldwork and drilling have combined to give a new understanding of the geology and the potential for significant PGM discovery. GNS Science geologist Nick Mortimer said the Longwood Range has what geologists call a layered gabbro, similar to those found in platinum-rich areas of South Africa and the United States. Details of the permits awarded are summarized in the attached table. All five permits awarded reside on the South Island. Permit No. Permit name Permit size MEP 56411 Longwood B 18,755 acres MEP 56409 Longwood C 22,652 acres MEP 56410 Murchison E-2 29,207 acres MEP 56412 Murchison E-4 29,331 acres MEP 56413 Murchison E-5 29,257 acres 129,202 acres Initial efforts of the company will be focused on analyzing all existing data, and conducting the necessary geological and economic modelling to determine the potential of any commercial mineral deposits within these permits. Daniel Brown, chief executive officer of Coronado, commented, "We are pleased to have been awarded this very exciting opportunity in New Zealand, which is complementary to our gold development assets in Montana, and the company's growing clean power generation business for industrial and residential customers in New Zealand." Platinum group metals use and markets The suite of metals known as PGM includes platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), iridium (Ir), rhodium (Rh), osmium (Os) and ruthenium (Ru). Platinum group metals have become critical to industry because of their extraordinary physical and chemical properties. The metals are refractory, are chemically inert even at elevated temperatures and display excellent catalytic activity. These properties are the basis for their principal uses: as catalysts in the automotive, chemical and petroleum refining industries, and as corrosion-resistant materials in the chemical, electrical, glass, and medical and dental industries. World demand for PGM over the past decade has grown steadily, especially for palladium, which has been adopted as the standard for manufacture of auto catalysts. This has had far-reaching effects since the introduction of stricter pollution controls in the U.S. and Europe, which has caused demand for PGM to increase sharply. Since 1997, platinum and palladium demand has outstripped supply, mainly because Russia, the world's biggest palladium producer, has been unable to meet demand from new production and has run down its stockpiles. As a result, there has been a strong move to substitute other platinum group metals for palladium, with a consequent sharp rise in demand and price.
