Roads Go Ever On

Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.

Roads go ever ever on,
Under cloud and under star.
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen,
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green,
And trees and hills they long have known.

3.0) your entry price is the on market first-traded price on or after the day following of the date of the posting of your selections.

I hope that the meaning of Rule 3 and no bit is understood that your starting prices is from the first market trade after today i.e. Monday 23rd or later

2. PEB (same again as 2013?)

5. CNU ( in for the BIG punt)

My pics for 2014 thanks PT:

XRO - unlikely to repeat last years 300% plus gain, getting riskier now, but hey, I like the vision.
PEB - Doing all the right things, great prospects
BLT - Making the right moves… minimal downside risk.
SNK - this one scares me as much as it intrigues me….risky, but minimal downside I reckon.
AIA - A nice safe one, a punt on tourism, property (Auckland) and international trade.

Seriously looked at CNU and DIL but consider there is downside risk still, and I'll only back them when they break the trends.

Good luck everyone.;)

XRO When you are on a good thing stick to it ...
PEB If and when more countries approve, (especially large ones) then 2, 4, 8, 16...
RYM WYAO AGT STI (Refer XRO)
FPH Great products, anyone can see that and increase sales ...
SML Excellent IPO, effective management team, clear vision, compelling annual report, outperform guidance in place for 2014, clear production plans for next few years, quality products, move to higher margins with higher value products, momentum - balanced against usual market risks, eg loss of suppliers/ production, drought, government intervention or regulation, Chinese market variables ...

My first time at this too! Look forward to it!

Brl - First "true" big production of their own coal has to be a good sign!
Dil - If an accounting error undid its share price, then fixing the mistake should……..! Also loving the bigger office!
BLT - Looking like a rocket set to go off with their product sale expanding!
Snk - Can't ignore those fantastic growth rates!
Peb - Big contracts and new products says it all!

DIL
MRP
ZEL

SLI --> Undervalued versus its worth to competition or to smart investors in the B2B SaaS search space. Fragmented market that could be rolled up by a well funded SLI or by someone else. Quality product in a quality space.
XRO --> Volatile but they have a good chance of being the major player in the USA, an excellent chance of being the major player everywhere else in the world, and have probably already courted offers from deep pocketed majors. They will get to $10 billion, but exactly when could require patience.
DIL --> Seemingly dodgy dealings spoil a company that is dominant in their niche. Something needs to change for market value to pop, and this is a bet that something will.
MRP --> Lovely hydro assets granting free electricity forever. A bet on the weather as well.
ZEL --> Very smart operators with a good handle on the future.

Santiago

I'll go at the riskier end of the spectrum...

PEB- feel like it's their time
XRO- if the customer numbers look good the overseas investors will flood in again.
PPP- someone has to strike oil this summer in NZ.
FPH- steady (to balance out the risk in the other 4)
SLI- so far very disappointing, but 2014 could be when they prove us wrong

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate? Now see here, you can't pick NTL, its too little. I've been told off for doing this myself. Change this smartly before the Tiger awakes..:eek2:

My first try at this.
DIL - Gambling that this stock will come right in a big way
PEB - Great potential, just hoping "gambling" it will happen this year
RYM - Steady performer
SML - Milks gotta be good for ya
SUM - Steady performer

Sold DIL months ago, Just brought again today, hopefully has reached its low.
Have a reasonable sized holding in the others and all in the green.
Thanks you guys for doing this, really appreciate the chance for a challenge

NTL is definitely the most popular invalid choice - if it closes on or above $0.018 then it would be a valid pick on that day and the next. But currently it isn't and thus it isn't.

Anybody making any sort of change to their selections should conform to Rule per 1.1:

"1.1) Entries can be modified only by making a new post to this thread containing the new selection and the existing selection that it replaces."

The idea being that I can pick up where I left off with checking entries and do not have to re-read the entire thread.

I picked your entry up between the post and your edit, even though I did not post the error report till this morning*.

So what should ZRO be?

Sorry PT, I should have stuck to rules, but I interpreted it not as a change of selection just hit wrong key (which are very close together on my keyboard) as there is no such code as ZRO.
I confirm that should be listed as XRO.

Many thanks for doing this again PT and Liz ...

PPL - because stuffing up their supply chain 4 years running just won't happen and two nicely dressed kids were wearing PPL with their outrageously hot mum at lunch
HNZ - because Percy says so and at lunch someone complained about their eye-wateringly plain facades
CNU - with Gaynor on this and the lunchtime conversation included many jokes about their name and current issues
BFW - because I love those Peanut Pistons and I had one for lunch together with a nice bottle of wine
THL - I have no idea ... Hobbit affect? Nope - were talking campervan holidays at lunch and whether they have wine glass holders (have you noticed that coffee cup holders in cars don't do wine glass all that well?)

Discl: all based on 10 minutes of post-lunchtime research that included a few wines and many grumbles that I can't go to cash (or equivalents) and more grumbles because picking the biggest losers next year would have been easier but will be even easier the year after ...

Can't stop laughing!!!
Must have been a fantastic lunch?
Trust the "outrageously hot mum" was your wife? !!!

I've actually never owned two of those picks... looks like something you'd get if you put Snoopy's, Percy's and my own past portfolios in the blender. Obviously nothing in there that is going to win "growth stock of the year award", so probably too conservative!

Great poem ... another good reason to be with this forum! Tough rules, though ... just 5 shares allowed!

Here is my pick:

MET - best value retirement village operator around?
HNZ - need to support the mainland - don't we?
OGC - even in a competition gold might be a good hedge ...
NWF - looks like deep-value play if they pay a dividend in 2014
WYN - some risk, but great story ... following Xero?

Merry Christmas & a prosperous new year to everybody in this forum - may we all win (one way or the other)

SUM - Great growth out of all three at the moment, also a holder.
BLT - Potential if they can execute correctly, also a holder
ATM - Some risk of a takeover target but lets see how they go with market penetration.
PEB - Holder
WYN - They have quite an interesting product, will surely be interesting to see how they go in 2014 (Not holding)

Picks:
PEB - Bring on the sales
CNU - This stock may become a political play... 2014 is an election year
BLT - Let's see what happens
MFT - A favourite of mine. Lots of room in the share price, determinant on the global economy improving
OGC - A punt on the price of gold and approval of the El Dorado project

What is this? I dare to hope
In 2014 my shares will cope
With mid-range scores
I'd be happy, sure
Not for me those junior miners
Almost better to get alzheimers
Perhaps this year my shares will fizz
Many thanks to PT and Liz.

Looking at the picks coming in, 90% of people have chosen the same 10 shares or so in their portfolio. (this is an eyeball percentage ONLY & If anyone wants to do the real stat's feel free to do so)

Interesting, are we all on the same page for whats out there in the NZ market. Why are the brokers so different to us?

Lastly this will make this competition very tight at the end of the year.

Good luck everybody.

I posted this on another thread the other day

With 60% of the picks coming from 10 stocks it just seemed rather relevant. And there is the discussion about brokers not wanting to be too brave and have opinions that are a lot different from their peers

Oh my god (sorry bobcat) what made me post such thoughts here

Excerpt from From Wall Street to Skank Street by Joe Bageant.

Full essay here http://www.joebageant.com/joe/2010/0...ll-street.html

"I'll tell ya what the stock market game is all about."

I didn't remember asking, but I knew I wouldn't get my turn signals fixed unless I listened.

"Used to be that a guy would pick a stock based on the facts. After a while, it got so that people looked around to see what other people's average opinion was, and they bet on that. Nowadays you look around and try to guess what the average opinion of the average opinion is. If you can guess enough other people's guesses about other people's guesses, then you bet on that and you make money. Don't ****ing matter if the stock is a dog. The stock market now runs the whole damned economy based on what fools believe other fools believe other fools believe. Run by a bunch of economists who figure that if they make enough fools believe the stock market is OK, then the economy will be OK. What if I ran my business that way? What if all I had to do was make people believe their cars was fixed? I'd go broke."

"You are broke, Gunther."

"That's beside the point."

Sounds like we are all a flock of sheep winner69 with the share market. I think however you do have a point.

People do not want to miss out on the action and up scoots the share price......

2013 is stamped in history to that.

What I find scary is that all too many people are buying madly on any and all Equity market dips. When that herd mentality is taken to the extreme, the peak/dip cycle becomes shorter and shorter, the peaks steeper and steeper, and the market bubbles really fast (which looks to be happening now). Watch out. When that bursts, fear will abound and money will flow quickly into Gold and Silver.

Would be interesting to see those same stats on "users by popularity" at the start of last year's competition, but compare that against how successful they were by the end of the year.

NO!

That is not playing by the rules at all. I can not allow it, otherwise everybody will start giving me grey hairs.

You enter 5 picks - and don't try that getting the code wrong on four of them trick either.
You can always change them before the shut off date (that is in the rules).

Get five picks in before midnight and you get PEB (assuming it is one of the five) at tomorrows open.

My picks are as follows:

ACY - (Previously Wakefield Hospital) - Should benefit from ACC's windfall/increased activity,
EBO - More growth lies ahead & should benefit from "synergies" from recent acquistion
IFT - Quality assets & quality management, the ZEL transaction was a smart move, more acquisitions ahead?
RBC - A play on a falling $US, US house recovery via Tenon, maybe more progress with Arborgen?
SUM - Been up to the villages in Hastings/Havelock North & seen the sites first hand, expect more growth.

Happy new year to all participants. Being a long term investor I have imposed an extra rule on myself - namely that I am only allowed to change one entry (on average year to year) from the previous year's competition. I am very keen to maintain a good flow of dividends into 2014, so my selections have a dividend bias. However, I am aware that rising interest rates tend to punish dividend shares. So it is important that as well as a good dividend producing capacity there is an underlying growth story there too.

SKC: Had a big year in 2013, signing up to redevelopments in Auckland and Adelaide. The share price didn't respond in kind. Given the stated 20cps dividend policy and a good growth path mapped out, this has to be my top pick. Worst case: A labour/greens government pulls the pin on the convention centre deal and SKC makes a large profit on the land, which allows them to fully concentrate on the Adelaide expansion.

SCT: The share price got hammered back in 2013, but the bonus centennial dividend showed ongoing commitment to the dividend hunters. Good forward order book for the Appliance production lines. Some restructuring for the mining division Rocklabs and slower 12 month prospects there the main negative. Will this be the year that the automated meat room and automated milking shed project's potential is finally recognised by the market?

PGW: My 'new' entry for the competition. Has a very strong dividend focus because of cash requirements of new Chairman Alan Lai of Agria. Would prefer PGW to pay down debt, but long term maybe dividends a good thing because of the poor use of past invested cash? Perhaps less affected by the high dollar than other 'exporters' (strictly PGW is more a supplier of exporters). Hoping the weather gods will play ball in Australia where the seeds division has had such a dreadful run. South American growth to continue to underpin longer term progress.

RBD: Good dividend payer. Continuing restructuring of Pizza Hut is the main growth driver with Carl's Junior there to take over the growth baton. New man in charge of KFC division will be keen to make his mark, so a potential surprise on the upside with the Colonel.

TEL: The old chestnut. A good dividend payer, even as the price adjusts downwards to improve the yield! Chorus got beaten up in 2013. This should have been good for Telecom, but Moutter seemed keener on establishing a new low operational benchmark, that will better show off the improvements he plans for the company as it takes a more consumer orientated focus. I think Moutter knows his business and sooner or later the market will wake up to that. My dark horse for 2014 (but also -gulp- for 2010 and 2011 and 2012 and 2013!).

Many on here would place PPP in the same situation as Rakon..

But I could not possibly comment :-)

Reasons ??

Ha... You are both right and wrong in my opinion. Like RAK, PPP's SP has been disappointing for those of us unfortunate to have stuck with it. I also once held RAK... Would never go back- terrible governance.

However, unlike RAK, PPP makes money (PE of around 4), has been known to pay a dividend, has no debt, and has potential. It once popped, back around 5 years ago I think, when they made a discovery, and went up to the high 70s and paid a reasonable dividend. In other words, if they hit hydrocarbons again, it's fair to assume that the SP would have the same upward potential, and that the company would use the profits (as they have no debt) to either increase exploration or return to shareholders. Not a bad investment, in my view, if you're happy with the inherent risk of the drilling business. RAK on the other hand does not appear to have the same upward potential, nor have they historically managed their earnings particularly well (from the point of view of a shareholder).

Having said all that, in 12 months if their SP is still languishing at 12c I wouldn't be surprised. I would, however, eat my shorts if RAK ever got near to 5 bucks again.

should probably continue this in the PPP stream, if there is one... Though doubt there's much interest...

C'mon Winner. Just pick 5. Throw a dart or two if you have to. To avoid any repeat of the past, simply state from the outset that it's a somewhat random choice, with a few major risk-takers in there.... PT did it kind of like this last year.... refer http://www.sharetrader.co.nz/showthread.php?8992-2013-Stock-Picking-Contest-Final-Results-Friday-20th-December-2013&p=390107&viewfull=1#post390107 .
