‘Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown wants everyone in Tāmaki Makaurau to celebrate Matariki - and he’s making sure the council has invested enough putea (money) to make that happen.
Brown said despite the financial pressure on the council coffers, Matariki was an event that we must all celebrate.
“We are proud to partner with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei to present Matariki Festival.
“This year, there are many free, whānau-friendly events where our communities can come together to reflect on and celebrate the Māori New Year, especially Umu Kohukohu Whetū which I will be attending.”’
Mayor Wayne Brown is asking Auckland ratepayers for a lot more putea so he can provide such essential services as free festivals.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown’s war on road cones: Abandoned cones can now be reported to AT
Quote:
Aucklanders can now report abandoned road cones - but while Mayor Wayne Brown has promoted the option, those whose views he canvassed seemed less enthusiastic.
Brown has slammed cones and road safety projects as annoying and a cause of road rage. A spokeswoman for Auckland Transport (AT) told the Herald the reporting feature predates Brown’s mayoralty.
Taking to social media yesterday, Brown polled users on Twitter on their feelings about road cones.
Brown asked: “Are you sick of seeing these useless cones scattered all over Auckland?”
At the time of writing, three-quarters of respondents chose the answer: “No, I love them”.
Less than a quarter said they were sick of them. About 1 per cent said they were “reporting now”.
Wayne, old mate - there's one cone that should definitely not be removed, and that's the one which Woody the bad Woodpecker is believed to be parked up on .. if it were removed, he would be in grave danger of falling into one of the large uncared for Waka of Filth Pot holes that now litter the roading infrastructure from top to bottom of the country .. and he would likely drown ;)
In the interests of public safety, whilst it's good to see him gone from such responsibilities - a cage over his cone to stop him falling off, getting away or drowning might be in best public interest, perhaps with signage for passers by to kick the cage to keep the inhabitant awake and ensure he's still inside ;)
