Increased number of people working on OSH related issues and hugely increased red tape in this field, does not always equate to improved safety outcomes.

Not sure if the data is correct.

Does not say much but low tax rates may not be the solution to every nations problems.

Interesting looking at the 1980 to 2023 comparison. What a change in view regarding contributing to society.
I wonder why this was. Something to do with high inflation or perhaps we had not quite finished investing in the young people of our nation. 1980 is this before the neoliberal ideology gained hold and we turned inwards and selfish. Seems to be more room to run amongst the NZ voting public if that is the case.
Not sure if how accurate the data is. It has Aussie at 55% personal tax rate but "income taxes" are 45% at the top rate.
https://www.msn.com/en-nz/news/other...ei=12#image=28
Anyway not sure it proves that high taxes results in the devastation of a country. Most of them seem pretty decent. Not sure I want to live in China though.
All these young people heading to Aussie must not understand that low tax and small govt makes for a better country. Aussie must be on the cusp of collapse.
Probably just added 10% for GST.
Maybe but it is not an income tax as stated in the article heading. Fluff piece anyway so accuracy is probably not important.
Maybe they included capital gains tax as well and averaged it with the lower income tax rates. Who knows?
To me the article if accurate appears to further refute the low taxes, small govt better country argument.
Admittedly high taxes do not equal non-wasteful spending so personally I think the public service cuts are most probably a good idea in some cases, but not sure we need the tax cuts as well. Why not run a surplus, or start the journey with a new small tax free threshold that we would all enjoy and it would probably help those who are struggling the most. Probably a bit more complicated than that.
I wonder how much a zero to $5,000 tax free income threshold would compare with moving the current tax thresholds up. I know it is not Chris Ls target demographic but they have been hit hard with Adrian's and Labour's inflation.
I do not really oppose moving the tax thresholds up either as inflation has been running hot and even if Adrian could manage 3% it has been so long since these thresholds moved Labour was being a bit sneaky not beating national to the punch raising them.
Not that I disagree with the proposals to get kids to school, education is important but David Seymour as a libertarian must be struggling with his ideals, forcing stupid/selfish parents to get their kids to school. Maybe they feel that a Fiji vacation is a better learning experience for their children.

ACT accuses Manawatū school of encouraging students into anti-Government activism
Quote:
The ACT Party has accused a Manawatū school of “using children as political pawns” after it allowed students to dress up in red, black and white in support of the Budget Day protests.
North Street School in Feilding posted on Facebook that the Government’s actions regarding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and well-being of tangata whenua raised “serious concerns”.
The post by deputy principal Pāora Pōmare continued: “It appears that the needs of marginalised communities, including the poor and minorities, are being overlooked.
WTF - who gave them the day off when they was sposed to be in the classroon learning ? ;)
Won't be learning much from those di%khead activist protestors who probably only went to skool to steal other kids lunches & now likely can't spell their own names ;)
And to think I was worrying about capital flight not so long ago. Maybe Chris, David and Winston have turned it around in a short period of time.

Or maybe all the wealthy people threatening to leave with their capital every time they hear something they don't like are full of sh*t.
Not you Balance I have seen the picture of your Australian paradise. Have you moved yet?
Hmmmmmn. Lord Seymour snap chatting young girls not great optics is it.
https://newsroom.co.nz/2024/06/20/se...h-school-kids/
Shameful & reprehensible how the media tried to conjure up something sleezy about Seymour interacting with school kids, both male & female.
Not a word about Ardern doing the same with 14 year old schoolboys.
Shame on the media.
Barry Soper: What's the point of the David Seymour Snapchat story?
It's not often that you would feel the need to jump to the defence of a politician, they're usually more than capable of looking after themselves, with a few exceptions.
One politician who isn't an exception, in terms of looking after himself that is, is the straight as a die David Seymour, ACT's leader. What you see is what you get.
And that's what teenage schoolkids got when they have contacted Seymour on social media over the years.
He's politely responded to them saying he's always behaved online as he is in person, courteous, responsive and polite.
But the fact that he even engaged with the kids has some sections of the media in high dudgeon, how could a middle aged politician reply to a questions from schoolgirls, some as young as 14?
The answer is simple, they asked him a question but then, so did schoolboys, which to the ghouls seems to be less offensive.
The media outlets, which unfortunately included Newshub, in its final few days of life, ran a breathless report suggesting Seymour making contact with schoolgirls back in 2016 was in some way sleazy.
The content of the messages wasn't inappropriate, so what's the point of the story?
Well after eight years the anonymous mother of a then 14-year-old is now calling for guidelines around how politicians communicate with young people on social media.
A former Epsom Girls Grammar student said she too was a 14 year old when she started messaging Seymour on Snapchat. The television piece showed young people crowded around phone cheering that Seymour actually replied.
Clearly it was seen as something of a badge of honour to get a politician to reply, all harmless fun, most of us would think.
But not that anonymous mum who's complained so long after the contact saying the fact that a much older politician was direct messaging them at all was bizarre.
A former Auckland Grammar Student was quoted saying he messaged Seymour when he was 15. He said, at the time, it was hilarious.
He remembers being thankful and going around the school, feeling like a big deal, showing everyone that the ACT leader had replied to him.
Like all the others he said messages from Seymour were never inappropriate.
It seems to me like a political hit job which hopefully will backfire on all of those who have brought into it. Although we will never know because they've hidden behind the cloak of anonymity.
The reason for stirring the pot so long after the event is only for them to know.
If there was any grooming done, which of course there wasn't in that sense, it would have been to encourage the young to take an interest in politics.
It was never Seymour who initiated the contact. He was on Snapchat because his party used to spend election campaign money with the site.
And what if it was a female politician replying to questions from schoolkids? You would likely have never have heard a squeak.
Apparently Jacinda Ardern did it all the time!
Very rarely I agree with you, but even though Seymour did nothing wrong it was poor judgment, especially when it's something like snap chat where the messages disappear.
Shame you had to ruin your post with such dumb, ugly comment to finish.
Can't help yourself I suppose, but no misogynists on here. 🙄
He wasn't texting them but replying to their texts - there's a big difference.
Anyway, it was obviously a hit job which highlights just how pathetic and reprehensible the msm has become. No mention of Ardern doing exactly the same to provide perspective.
Karma - Newshub is gone and it will be wonderful when more will follow if that's the quality of reporting to be expected from them.
BTW - there’s that bad smell again for those who haven’t put the loser Dandelo on Ignore. Must smell really bad for him to want to continue to spread it around - imagine what his stinky abode must be like!
Hmm, what's going on here.
Ministry of Regulation staffers earn 150k per year.
https://www.thepost.co.nz/politics/3...edium=referral
Maybe it's time to take the axe to this ministry of waste and bureaucracy.
Public Service Commission and PSA have a bit to do with the pay in public sector. They really try to keep the bands similar across the sector, I haven't bothered to look (because 150k is nothing special) but whatever the roles are they likely attract the same salary no matter which ministry.
If you'd rather they offered less for the salaries you'll either get low performers or no applicants.
We have set role salaries, your job is sized to a band and that's the amount you get. Every role and the band it's in is openly available information.
One of the girls commented in the article that she found it a bit creepy and I think it is inappropriate:
“There were definitely instances where one of us at 14 years old would send him a Snapchat and then he would reply. We’d be in school uniform, it was very obvious that we were young women at school. I found it creepy at the time, I still find it creepy now. And it’s interesting that it’s a shared experience amongst a lot of other people.”
