They also promised to electrify the Government fleet of 15,000 cars. Have delivered 108 in 3 years or 0.7% of the fleet. So yes like Beagle said, "electioneering fantasy land stuff"
You are right, and it looks like the uptake of EV's is on the decline big time. Less EV's registered last month than 2 years ago.

This is one policy that is achievable. It would not be cheap, but certainly possible. The lake Onslow Pumped Storage scheme is what would ensure the lights stay on during a dry year. If taken to its maximum potential it would treble NZ's available storage at a cost of $4B.
The point to remember is that Onslow would not produce any new energy, but would store energy at times of excess and release it again at times of shortage. The additional new energy would need to come from wind farms, like the 860 MW Castle Hill one.
Probably not.
By 2030 all the Rankine units will be retired and unit 5 will be nearing the end of its economic life.
Replacing those will be the Castle Hill wind farm, but that only becomes fully economic if there is a method of storing that wind energy at times of high generation. This is where the Onslow scheme helps. It can store energy, and at the same time apply a floor to the price that wind farms get for their generation. This would be doubly effective if Genesis was to own and/or operate the Onslow scheme.
