Bookkeeping for a bookkeeping novice - advice please

Hello all,

I've been reading this forum for a while and this is my first post. I have a number of small holdings and at present my accounting procedures are limited to filing dividend statements in a concertina file. I would like to improve this side of my investment activity but have essentially no knowledge of accounting, tax, bookkeeping etc. Would any of you perhaps have some advice for how to build my skills in this area? I've considered doing some community education accounting classes or similar.

Anyway, it's nice to be on the board post-wise.

if you ask questions about investing you will probably receive lots of comments and suggestions. Asking about accounting issues maybe misdirected since not many posters are qualified accountants. Your considered options sound like one place to start but to bypass all of that, you may well consider spending a little and consulting a chartered accountant for an hour or so of time to get your systems set to a standard so you will be able to at least present a cohesive and pertinent record to your tax specialist at the end of the year. I agree, Sharesight is a terrific service, looks after multiple portfolios, auto uploads contracts and end-of-day data, has heaps of useful reports including the ones your accountant needs.
