So typical of those who have no ambition beyond being second class and third best.

One word about Cindy & her government - Kiwibuild.
And most importantly of all, why is it that Australia are still seeing an average on about 10 new cases per day when New Zealand sees zero? Their curve has a sting in the tail and only time will tell whose response was better overall.

Australia is a huge country and SA, WT and NT have been reporting zero new cases. They have the sting in the tail of the equivalent of 2 new cases a day for NZ. No big deal.

Big deal is that they did not need a hammer to crack the nut like NZ.

It will be a big deal if it persists. If we maintain zero new cases and their outbreak continues to smoulder away, we will be able to unlock more completely, earlier. Like I said, time will tell, but both countries are doing very well compared to most similar countries.

A virus doesn't care about essential services. It wants humans to pass itself onto. The beauty of a full lockdown is that all cases whether detected or undetected will decrease in number and there is a chance it will be eliminated sucessfully.

    Agreed - if it persists.

Bear in mind however that Australia has been much much more open than NZ so it is not surprising that they will have lingering cases.

the fact the FBU is laying off 1000 NZers speaks as to the cost of the lockdown.
Like Balance I reckon that cost could have been avoided, but no one knows for sure and contrary to previous poster I dont think time will tell conclusively.
For clarity, nothing I say is advice....

How could it since there is a wage subsidy for three months? The lockdown was only for one month. Free/subsidised wages for a further two months.

Say you have staff on $75k per annum. Thats costing you $1,500 per week. The $585 only goes so far.

NZ govt. clearly doubted it could control the pandemic without a complete lock-down. Australian govt. clearly believed it could. It is possible that both were right.

Comes down to how much confidence each government has in its ability and in its citizens.

And comes down to what a control freak this Labour government is - just like the Clark government.
