    Default Erebus 40 year anniversary.

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/a...ectid=12284801

Time to reflect 40 years on. I remember as a young man listening in on the radio while the nation tensely waited for the late arrival of flight 901 and then finally the announcer said, even on the planes most fuel efficient setting it cannot still be airborne now.
My heart skipped a beat and I knew something really terrible had happened. What followed was one of the very saddest chapters in our nation's history.

Appropriate we take time to reflect at the 40th anniversary on 28 November.

Just a note of caution, some of content in the video's in the above link is "very confronting".

Good that the Government and Air New Zealand have finally apologised. The right thing to do and should have happened a very long time ago.

Hope that included an apology to Justice Mahon's family who many consider was made a scapegoat and effectively became the 258th victim of Erebus.
An orchestrated litany of lies...who can forget that famous phrase.... and I believe that's exactly what it was.

Didn't the Privy Council overturn that finding of the Mahon report?

The buffoon Muldoon was a personal friend of Morris Davies and took it upon himself to defend his friend and Air NZ.

He totally abused his position as PM to launch a high profile disgraceful attack on Justice Mahon's integrity and integrity.

Nope. The Privy Council reluctantly agreed with the Court of Appeal finding that Justice Mahon exceeded his term of reference in calling out Air NZ's devious attempts at that time to blame the pilots and everybody else, but Air NZ.

I believe Justice Mahon was very measured and exactly correct when he said it was 'Orchestrated'. So much evidence was tampered with. The Airline, under orders from Morrie Davis, shredded loads of documents. The Captain's diary was emptied of its contents. Peter Mahon's findings were never overturned. The Privy Council said Mahon could not use the term 'Orchestrated' (because it begs the question 'by whom?'). Piggy was in London the week the Privy Council sat - what a coincidence!

So as I said, the Privy Council overturned Mahon's finding there was "An orchestrated litany of lies."

I am not sure how "reluctant" they were in coming to that conclusion as didn't they find that Mahon had not practised natural justice as he had not allowed the people accused of his "orchestrated litany" to respond to his claim?

"In 1983 however, the Privy Council found Mr Mahon had acted outside his jurisdiction in finding a conspiracy by Air New Zealand, on the grounds that those accused of it did not get a chance to give evidence. Mr Mahon resigned in response, but he never resiled from his findings"

I am no fan of Muldoon and the state socialism the National Party practiced in that era. I think personal attacks were a defining characteristic of his political style?
