Looks like there are a few limitations:
    https://phys.org/news/2022-08-infrar...er-meters.html

Limited range (up to 30m). Optical power of 400mW transmitted i.e. 0.4W. The receptor photovoltaic cell produces 85mW of power output, which is an efficiency of 85/400= 21%.

I don't see many power lines being taken down to be replaced by this.

but once you can do it a little bit, soon someone figures out how to make it better.
if this goes ballistic, it would be a total game changer.

doesnt change the requirement for someone to produce the power though.
For clarity, nothing I say is advice....

Very very cool and i'm excited to see it, I've always thought wireless power would be a giant leap forward technology wise, so many practical applications, as well as just plain handy applications. Have a power transmitter/base station on your deck, means you can use speakers, lights, powertools etc with no cords required in your back yard.. awesome

"Giant pumped hydro scheme up in the air till after election
Labour rules out North Island pumped hydro, and slow-pedals contentious South Island Lake Onslow Battery Project in face of National opposition.

Uncertainty over the building of the country’s biggest hydro scheme is set to continue for residents of the Teviot Valley at least until October’s general election.

Cabinet said on Wednesday investigations will continue into both the Lake Onslow pumped-hydro project and a “portfolio” approach to electricity generation including geothermal and biomass for meeting New Zealand’s future energy needs"

    etc

Shame, Lake Onslow is such a good opportunity. Too good to be politicised

True, it won't go away. But the build time is long, much longer than the average 6 years (2 terms) that most governments get in NZ

The article below shows how ignorant and short sighted Natijnal are currently being in regards to Lake Onslow, where we have an existing man made lake and lower elevation river just ripe for development. As the saying goes, it will never be cheaper than right now
