That someone's maths is well off.

Assuming the capital + dividend amounts ARE correct then the per annum for RYM is 18.8%.

They have two options, 'percent simple' and 'percent compounded'. I used %simple. You're right with %compounded. What's the difference for a non-maths expert?

time in the market is the maybe the best game baabaa posed

The $10,000 invested in OCA at the IPO will be $315,000 in 2037 if it performs as well as RYM over 20 years

That's a 24% annual return from where it is at the moment

Sorry baabaa I don't think you little exercise really showed that

I would suggest that 'simple' growth/return figures are only useful for short terms of less than one year.

F'rinstance something I hold on the ASX rose 69% in two days whilst I sat in a tree house and photgraphed Proboscis Monkeys.

To annualise that would give a percentage that was:
    a/ ludicrous
    b/ unsustainable.

But the RYM 152% pa return actually tells you NOTHING, even standing alone. You do not consistently or even on average achieve that return per year.

SUM 'only' manages a simple return of 59% per annum on that sheet. SO, is it only 1/3rd (ish) as good as RYM?

    No.

The timescales for the two are very different and this gives the totally misleading numbers.

On a levelling up compound growth you get
    SUM @ 20% pa
    RYM @ 19% pa

which as we all know is a lot closer to what we would expect - they are very similar, long term, in performance. (Future performance may differ from reported figures etc).

Yes. In Indonesia they are known as 'Orang Belanda' [Dutchmen] because of their red faces and big noses.
The Dutch were the colonial occupiers of Indonesia.

Just as you may, following the down-rampers

...then following the rampers who have been already been seduced means you'll often end up in the crap.
