if it wasnt for the US we would be run by the Japanese now...
there was a time when Washington knew who the PM of NZ was and play golf together...
now the US doesnt even know who the AUS PM is... some fellow...
the least they could do was give NZ and old sub to practise with...
or better to buy a new german local costal electric one to play with in Auckland harbour...
its official NZ is now been given the responsibility of look after the local south seas islands and thats it...
While the big boys including the UK play with there big toys... NZ may have won the America cup but that toy boats.
As Winston Churchill said you cant negotiate when you head is in the jaws of the Tiger.
And NZ has it head firmly in the Jaws of the China Tiger and our Allies know it...arh friends who want to rescue NZ but cant just yet...

Underwater drones will be viable soon.
In theory a $20m undersea drone could make short work of a $4b submarine.

And the subs are delivered in 2050? they're already out of date.

The Top Leadership aka Beehive Busy Bodies appear to be too fixated with chasing the numerous tails of the Covid
all over the Northern sector to be bothered with any of that sort of fancy foot work .. remember Aunty Helen has plonked
the current lot fairly & squarely in China's lap & with current meticulous degrees of success becoming evident in
chasing Covid trails, erecting new sets of 4 walls, punishing property investors and arresting the damage of all the
supplies locked down soundly in Covidville - it's doubtful whether the Beehive talent would have what it takes to
even navigate more difficult tasks out of a paper bag without further critical accidents happening ..

Former Aussie PM Paul Keating blasts the planned purchase of the expensive duds.
“This arrangement would witness a further dramatic loss of Australian sovereignty,” he wrote, “at a time when United States reliability and resolution around its strategic commitments and military engagements are under question.”

"planned purchase of the expensive duds"
sub's
not if you want trade deals... its a boys club now with big toy's .. and china stole a march or rather sailed down deep into the south china sea starting a cold war..
now every major former seas power and current sea power is heading to the south china seas. Even the Dutch have joined exercises and task groups.
The UK besides it carrier groups has just sent 2 new class corvettes to tour the world on interdiction tasks and into the south pacific on a 5 Year dispatch.
its going to get very crowded over the next 10 years and even the AUS PM KEVIN RUDD is saying china is going to be very dangerous customer over the next decade..
Aus is taking the trade war up a level and CPP never saw it coming. Even the Philippines is getting starting more assertive patrols.
Aus is now betting it can start to prod the CPP with the help of multi pronged strategy aligning India, south K and Japan, UK and the US back to the trade talks table.
The US will love it and reward the ockers with trade access and of course GOLF!

China doesn't even have a capable navy.
Maybe the Iraq/afghanistan Triplets can get onto internet cybersecurity at some point.

Paul Keating shills for Macquarie Bank. The changed deal must have removed some of the fees this bank was anticipating gorging itself on.
Boop boop de do
Marilyn
PS. So Virginia class hunter killers are duds are they. Perhaps Paul should recommend the purchase of Han class subs from you know who. Foe a fat fee of course.

You can trust Keating more than you can trust Dutton or Morrison. It's a whole two weeks since this
https://www.minister.defence.gov.au/...-consultations
It includes the statement
"Both sides committed to deepen defence industry cooperation and enhance their capability edge in the region. Ministers underlined the importance of the Future Submarine program. They agreed to strengthen military scientific research cooperation through a strategic partnership between the Defence Science and Technology Group and the Directorate General for Armaments.".
Dutton just forgot to mention that the future sub programme was with other parties.

Afghanistan if anything was more of a NATO mission in response to an attack on one of its member states (The USA), with France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Canada sending more troops than Australia.
The Iraq War included 31 in the coalition, with Poland, Australia, UK & USA sending troops.
