    Hello George

    Thanks for that link/info........certainly disturbing.

IMO MT is a good charting package for developing
strategies using the many additional indicators that
    are widely available.

My suggestion would be that if you have a
strategy that works with MT, use a demo
account for spotting the trade, but place
all orders with a non-MT broker.

Look forward to your further participation on ST

    Some further info..............

We are in the the final stages of experimenting with additional strategies on the Alpari demo MT platform which cannot be traded using Oanda.

Some strategies appear to work very well on the demo, and we will shortly open a small trial live account with Alpari UK as an addition to our Oanda live account. There has only been one serious glitch on the platform so far.

This was when I opened a short trade directly off the Eur.Jpy chart and it somehow placed a position in Eur.Aud. Not sure why/how that could happen, but I managed to get a quick profit and exited within 5 minutes.

Occasionally there seems to be a hesitation before the trade is placed/closed (perhaps 5-10 seconds), but slippage does not seem an issue in these cases.

Previously I mentioned the inability to scale out of trades, but we discovered later that this is possible by amending the lots on the close trade ticket.

The plug in issue has been mentioned at the Alpari forum.......

I plan to visit their offices when I am in London - June 08

    Thanks Arco,

Regarding MT4 - I use it for 2 years now and know it quite well, so if you or anyone have any questions, you're all welcome to ask me.

I like MT4, use it for charts and analysis, and trade through Oanda.
Considering that big brokers like FXCM are trying to switch to MT4, the demand must be overwhelming. Maybe one day most of the market makers will offer MT4.
So far to me it's the best free charting platform.

    Best!

    George

That is very cool link, thanks Arco.

We can also use Help Topics in MT$ platform.

Additional cool functions I often use:

    1. To copy trendline or any object (channel, triangle, etc), double-click on it, press Ctrl key, and pull the line using mouse. This creates a copy of the object. I've found it very helpful especially in creating parallel channels (I use it for "Bump and Run" reversal pattern).

    2. Some brokers seem to display only some markets, but have more data saved to open charts (even if they don't offer these to trade).
To see all symbols, go to
Market Watch, right click on "Symbol", choose "Show All"
If you download North Finance MT4 - you'll have access to some futures charts, i.e.: Soybeans, Corn, Wheat, Natural Gas, Crude Oil, SP500 mini, DJ mini, Nasdaq, as well as spot Gold, Silver, and indexes (SP, DJ, NDQ).

    3. Good site for indicators (huge collection):
    http://www.forexmt4.com/mt_yahoo/

    How to use it?
    a. Copy the code from the site
    b. Open your Meta Editor
    c. Click on New Indicator, choose "Indicator" not Expert Advisor
    d. Write the name of your indicator
    e. click "next" until "finished"
Meta Editor will now open a file
    f. delete contents of that file
    g. pass the code saved from yahoo site
    h. press "compile"
    i. go back to your platform, the indicator will appear under "Custom Indicators"

If you need any indicators for MT4 let me know post or pm). I have quite a collection, although I don't use 99.9% of them

Have any of you tried programming backtests in MT4 as an expert advisor? Are there any books to help learn the programming language?

Try the web for "MQ4 Manual"...you should be able to find the manual for free. (I haven't programmed anything myself).

Lots of info here that may assist...........

I'm trying out GoMarkets version of MT4 now.
I like the longer time frames of data availble and it has inbuild screenshot capability . Possibily will comment more later.
For clarity, nothing I say is advice....

Yes those futures are very very cheap.

About 1/10 the cost of CMC's ones...I dare say cheap enough to day trade.
