Here's a tip for you tricha.

Air New Zealand's lagging share price could double in value as the global economy recovers, tourism numbers rebound and new planes arrive, analysts say.

The Rugby World Cup next year will also provide a short-term shot in the arm for the carrier, which is majority owned by the Government.

Air New Zealand shares dipped to an "unwarranted" $1.26 last month. They closed at $1.31 last week, compared with its net tangible asset backing value of $1.50 a share.

Air New Zealand has weathered well the financial crisis, record oil prices and a collapse in demand.

Now with global travel recovering, more stable fuel prices leading to improving long-haul yields, together with new planes and the Rugby World Cup promising an up to $500 million windfall, analysts say Air New Zealand profits and share price are poised for take-off.

Forsyth Barr head of research Rob Mercer has upgraded Air New Zealand to "buy" from "accumulate". "When you do think about investing in Air New Zealand, typically a doubling is probably the minimum return that you would want."

Analysts have a 12-month target price of between $1.80 and $1.90 a share.

Mr Mercer said his upgrade was mainly based on his positive outlook for profits for the next two years.

"The outlook for global tourism has improved and this, combined with its superior product offering and fleet flexibility, should see Air New Zealand's earnings improve out to the 2012 financial year."

He is forecasting earnings before interest and tax to climb from $78m last year to $190m for the 2010 full year, peaking at $417m in 2013.

The airline doubled its tax-paid profit for the half year to December to $56m. Adjusting for hedging effects the profit was up $70m to $96m.

While group yields were down nearly 10 per cent in the seven months to January, the weighted average fare on long-haul routes was up between 2 per cent and 7 per cent, with the exception of Shanghai which was down 8 per cent, Mr Mercer said. Visitor arrivals for the six months to February were up 5.2 per cent on the same month last year.

"Now that the demand outlook has improved, Air New Zealand has substantial operating leverage over the next few years," he said.

New long haul Boeing 777-300 jets due from October featuring the economy "skycouch" that converts into a bed for two, and an improved premium economy seat, should give it a competitive advantage.

The domestic 737-300 fleet will be replaced with larger Airbus A320s. The much-delayed 787-9 Dreamliners are due to arrive from the end of 2013, allowing Air New Zealand to maintain its top-quartile market position, Mr Mercer said.

The Rugby World Cup in September and October next year should generate an extra 80,000 long-haul passengers over the five months surrounding the event, coinciding with Air New Zealand's traditional low season.

New Zealand Funds Management chief investment officer Michael Lang said that during the global financial crisis airline shares were priced as though they would survive for only another two or three years.

However, trends suggested demand was returning, he said. Air New Zealand had been able to maintain fares despite the huge fall in fuel prices and that would flow through to profits in the next few years.

As margins improved over the next year to 24 months, "there is very significant upside in the stock".

"It is very rare that you get to buy the franchise at current prices. Every time you bought when the value metrics have looked like this you have doubled your money, and that has happened several times in the life of Air New Zealand."

    I told you tricha!

Air New Zealand shares shot up nearly 7 per cent on the back of analyst expectations that the airline's shares had the potential to double in value in the next two years.

The shares yesterday peaked at $1.40, before closing at $1.38, up 7 cents on light volumes.

Forsyth Barr head of research Rob Mercer said Air New Zealand's share price made up for lost ground yesterday, having been gradually sold off too far in March, dipping to a low of $1.23 last week.

But a buy recommendation from Mr Mercer, on the back of an expectation that benefits of recovering passenger numbers, an improving global economy, more stable fuel prices and new planes would start to flow through to higher earnings next year, sparked the interest of retail investors.

Yesterday's buying interest had reset the price to where it was before selling pressure took it lower, Mr Mercer said. "We are just a little ahead of where it all started in mid March."

Analysts believe Air New Zealand shares could reach $2.30 in the next two years and have a target price of between $1.80 and $1.90 a share over the next year.

I suppose you've missed out on this one too tricha!

Air New Zealand advanced 2.8 percent to $1.49 and has almost doubled since reaching a March 5 low of 76 cents. The airline proved resilient through the economic downturn and has spruced up its fleet to benefit from a return to economic growth.

The volcano in Iceland will be bad news, particularly for European airline and tourism shares, however there must be some shares which will benefit from this unfortunate chaos, the worst since 911 apparently.
    Any ASX suggestions?
Mine is TLS, telecommunication companies. 6 million passengers affected.

Airline sector losing quarter of a billion US dollars a day... I suspect Skol will do what he usually does when faced with overwhelming evidence that upsets his preconceptions - ignore it completely (or go on about something completely unrelated)
