Faith based I know but maybe Friday a sign of things to come for 2025. Big down day in stocks while gold shoots up in the expectation of more debt and debasement of currencies. It seems logical to me as a believer in gold as a store of value.

Imagine anyone suggesting the USD or NZD was a store of value, ridiculous. No point selling your stocks if you put the sale proceeds into cash.

First: Money is a store of value.
Second: Money is a unit of account.
Third: Money is a medium of exchange.

    Important characteristics of money.

    1/Durability.
    2/Portability.
    3/Divisibility.
    4/Uniformity.
    5/Limited supply.
    6/Acceptability.

    Gold good for 1/, 4/, 5/ & 6/and I would argue 3/ divisible as well.
NZD electronic money is durable and all the rest EXCEPT 5/ Limited supply.

Cash is trash unless you are holding it while your stock portfolio drops 20% and you have the courage and luck to get back in at or near the bottom. Only one day I know but 2025 might be an interesting year.

Just pumping gold as I have been tempted to sell some gold producers lately as they are a speculation rather than an investment and my understanding of geology, mining and gold pricing is very limited. Nice to have an up day.

Sorry not adding anything worthwhile to the thread.

An unusual sign: despite the US$ index making a very strong finish overnight.....gold stocks are up strongly today.

Chuck in what's happening in China with domestic / global demand, Trumpest policies towards China, Mexico, NATO, Euro Nations, domestic US policies on top of the LA Fire disaster - where will the US$ go ?

In times of global economic uncertainty and Trump rattling the cage - who knows the flight might go into metals that are a good store or hedge on value rather than into the volatile assortment of pesos around the globe or greenbacks .. maybe pushed too far another currency instead of the USD might become more recognised benchmark .. but who knows

All that's needed now is for the OPEC countries to start having a bit of Oil price play to create some further chaos in the equation or another round of GFC - what chapter are we up to next ; perhaps a property meltdown somewhere richochetting around the globe or Russia finally firing off some nastier versions of nuke missiles in a southerly direction ?
